A Report from School Council The School Council met on 19th July 2021 and were thrilled to have SRC representatives present on the ideas that have been generated by the student body. With some passionate future leaders amongst the SRC reps, it is evident that some great activities will come from this group whilst at the same time providing an opportunity for greater student voice and agency. Interestingly much of what the SRC had identified as areas of need and opportunities across the school are also common themes for discussion at School Council. Some of the hot topics on the agenda are improving school traffic and student safety, building a new bike shed and creating a safer more sustainable play space for children. The School Council continue to liaise with local Government in respect to parking and traffic concerns and we urge all parents and carers to be mindful of the parking limits to keep the traffic moving. For the moment traffic flow is not an issue with another lockdown and remote learning which was another topic of discussion at Council with a presentation from Nadine Pye on the feedback received from parents, students and teachers regarding the remote learning experience. School Council wants to acknowledge the tremendous effort being made by teachers and the entire Derinya staff to support every child’s individual learning needs and wellbeing as well as acknowledging the support of parents over this time. Derinya News YEAR 1! Maths Crafternoon! Grade 1 were so happy to be back at school this week! The students were particularly excited to be back because, in Grade 1, Wednesdays (or Thursdays) are our Maths "Crafternoon" days! Each week the children complete a maths task that consolidates the new content or skills they have been learning in their maths sessions through a craft-based activity. During these sessions, the children are doing much more than just practising a new maths skill. They are developing their fine motor skills (cutting, painting, gluing); exercising their creativity (we are blown away by some of their creations!); and learning to follow instructions, problem solve and voice their own ideas. While incredible learning is going on, something very important is also happening, the children are loving it! (We know the children love what they create because after every Crafternoon session they ask, "Can we take these home today?" This is a sure sign the children are proud of their work!) Of course, Crafternoon can be a bit of a challenge for the teachers - we have to make sure the learning is purposeful, the activities are successful and the glitter use doesn't get out of control! If you see your child's teacher with glitter on their face or in their hair, you will know that a Crafternoon session has taken place! We have had some Crafternoon triumphs this year and the children should be so proud of their work. Some of our most successful and enjoyable sessions this year have included: A Season Book - At the start of each season we go out to the tree on the block and look at how it is changing. The children then illustrate those changes in their own little book. This was a beautiful, relaxing activity in summer and autumn; winter was a little more challenging! (Bring on spring!) O'clock and Half Past - Wristwatches Each child made their own little watches to remind them where the 'big' (minute) hand is positioned for each of these times. Addition Flowers In class we were exploring addition and the many different addition sums we could create for a number. Each petal had a different sum and then we made a whole grade maths garden. Symmetry Butterflies - The name gives it away! We braved using paint in the classroom and created beautiful symmetry butterflies! Doubles Ladybirds - Sticking to an insect theme we explored doubling numbers. A key skill in developing number sense. Place Value Monsters - In Grade 1 the students are exploring how the position of a number denotes its value. The children learnt to use models to represent numbers and then they used their creativity to make a place value monster! Fact Family Ice Creams - Yum! This week we have been investigating fact families. The children made a delicious (craft) ice cream with each scoop showing a number sentence that belonged to their fact family. There are many more Crafternoon sessions to come this year and we are looking forward to them! We are stocking up on glitter, paint, glue and sparkles. Through all the mess, sticky fingers and glitter-in-the- hair, we remind ourselves... maths is awesome! DERINYA NEWS Through shared values and high expectations we strive to develop a passion for life long learning for all members of our school community.
