Dear Families, "Every book you read makes you a better reader. Every book you read makes you a better writer." Ursula Dubosarsky. This quote was shared recently by the Primary Education English Association of Australia. It was one of six important takeaways from their 2020 conference. It implies that every time we read a book, we get better, at not only our reading, but our writing improves as well. It makes sense. So, as parents of children in primary school at St Aloysius School, we can ask ourselves…. What book/s are we reading at the moment? (Adults) What book/s are your children reading? What books are you reading TOGETHER? When I was in primary school, my mother and father tried every trick in the book (pardon the pun) to get me to read. They bought books on topics I loved; space, cricket, footy. I found that I looked at the pictures, enjoyed reading a couple of pages, then ran outside to play some more sport. The thing I now believe was missing was a connection not only to the books but to the feeling you get when you read with someone else, or on your own in a safe, comfortable place. Sharing a book with your child and reading together on a regular basis, creates a habit. It is a time every day when your child feels safe, connected and loved. Their love of books develops with the love you are sharing together as you read. Don’t get me wrong, I love my parents but I couldn’t sit still long enough in those days for reading to make sense to me. It is my belief that every good reader FEELS the joy that reading provides. I encourage all families to get back into reading. Set aside some time to snuggle up on the couch together and read. Parents reading their own books are setting a great example to their children. Children reading to parents or grandparents and enjoying stories together building relationships with each other and with books. This can be an enormous advantage in life that you are providing for your children. They become fabulous readers and as a bonus, their writing improves at the same time. I encourage you to put the above quote on your fridge to encourage you all in your reading efforts. I promise to start a new book tonight too! Happy Reading Everyone Michael Kennedy Have a great week everyone. Michael Kennedy.
Our Learning Foundation News – Celebrating 100 Days! What an exciting day it was today for our children, finally celebrating 100 days of on-site learning at school! This was a lovely celebration and the children looked fantastic in their creative 100 themed t-shirts. We spent our day focusing on all things 100, including writing 100 words that we know, seeing what 100 objects can look like, writing 100 rhyming words and so much more. We thank our families for your effort in helping the children to create such wonderful tops. We are so proud of the children and the resilience and patience they have shown throughout this unusual first year of school. Recently, we have been focusing on Informative Texts with the children and discussing their features. We have been comparing Narratives, to texts that have facts and looking at how they are visually different. This includes the text often having photographs instead of illustrations. In Mathematics, we are currently revising, addition, subtraction and sharing. The children also continue to explore Problem Solving tasks twice per week, in which they can have a go at showing their known strategies and different ways of thinking. Our Inquiry is well underway and we have been learning about Australian animals. These include Kangaroo, Echidna, Emu and Koala. We have been learning about their features, habitat and diet. We will also begin to look at the lifecycle of living things soon. We hope you have a fantastic week! Georgia and Kaitlin 100 Days at school!
Halls Gap Zoo was the perfect destination for our Year 3/4 excursion. The children had a wonderful time exploring and the animals were just as curious to have visitors.
Our Learning Our learning in Japanese Konnichiwa – Hello! In Japanese this term, students have been learning some basic geography and completed map work of Japan. The 5/6 students worked collaboratively on a poster titled, ‘This is Japan’ or ‘Kore wa Nihon desu’. Students have also revised greetings, played ‘Sensei Says’ which is a listening game with instructions in Japanese and joined in singing various Japanese songs. The focus for the next couple of weeks is counting. Students will learn to recognise and draw numbers in kanji and a counting song. I have been really impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment shown by the lovely St Aloysius students. Interesting facts; Japan could fit into Australia 22 times but the population of Japan is 5 times more than Australia. Only 20% of Japan is habitable. The land is mostly mountains and forests. Sayonara- Bye for now Ms Bawden Look at these beautiful smiles! It is so lovely to see how much the children are enjoying their learning!

Parents may visit the office if required but are asked to consider phoning instead if possible and that only one visiting adult be in the school office at any time. A reminder to families, when dropping off or picking up children that we must all adhere to the social distancing rules. This means that parents are required to wear masks and are requested not to gather in large groups. We thank all of our families as we work together to keep us all safe. The City of Ballarat has asked us to remind parents and carers to be mindful of the road rules and the danger of parking illegally around school. The City of Ballarat Traffic Officers will be enforcing parking regulations around the schools in the coming weeks. Wellbeing Please remember, it is of the utmost importance that we remain vigilant of the actions we take to maintain a healthy school community and minimise the risk of transmission of illness. If your child is unwell, even with mild symptoms please keep them at home and seek medical advice if needed. It is also a timely reminder to ensure that school is aware of any medical conditional, asthmas, allergies etc. that your child may have. Please ensure that school is up to date with your child’s medical and emergency contact information so we can best support their wellbeing. Drink Bottles Please remember that it is important to ensure that your child has their drink bottle with them at school each day (particularly now that it is warming up) as they are unable to use the shared bubble taps during the current restrictions. Please remember to name your child’s drink bottle. Thank you. School Uniform With the commencement of Term 4, we look to our Sunsmart guidelines; this means that the children are required to wear their school hat for all outdoor activities. Please remember to check that your child’s hat is labelled clearly with their name so that we can return it to them if it is misplaced. Sunscreen will be available for the children to apply at school. If your child has sensitive skin or a preferred brand of sunscreen, you can send it with them to apply at school. Please remember that sports uniform is required for the PE rotation days only and full summer uniform is to be worn all other days. Thank you!
