Monday
Year 7 Bushcraft trip or
Year 7 in school
‐ a morning of English & afternoon of Science
Aims and outcomes of the day

In English we will be using a range of novels to create a literary art project inspired
by Tom Phillips' `A Humument'. Students will use their artistic skill and storytelling
ability to remake pages from an existing novel, so that each page tells a new story,
through art and language. We will provide the novels and students will need to bring
their own art equipment: pens and pencils are ideal for this but students are welcome
to bring paint, pastels etc. as well.

Timings

8.30am Register in C11 followed by a Humument hunt around the school
9.00am Construct your Humument
10.50am Break
11.10‐11.40am Clear up and present work. Prize giving.

In Science our students will be competing to build the strongest bridge and the highest tower using only
spaghetti and marshmallows.

They must consider many variables when designing their bridges and towers, such as the distance to be
spanned, what it needs to carry, materials available, budget, the forces acting on them and what the finished
product will look like.

Investigating questions

What does the bridge/tower look like? Which shapes are the
strongest?
How can you improve your design?
How did the different materials behave?
Could you build a stronger bridge/tower with more of the
same materials?
What alternative materials would be better?
