19th July 2020 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time -Year A Liturgical Practices regarding Holy Communion Monsignor Brian Walsh, the Local Administrator for the Diocese of Palmerston North has written to all Parishes regarding liturgical practice regarding Holy Communion. Monsignor Brian says: “Although the Wellington Archdiocese has not lifted the liturgical restrictions from Covid19 I have been given the ‘go-ahead’ by Cardinal John to do so for the Diocese of Palmerston North if we see it appropriate. I have consulted priests and laity and have consequently decided to lift the liturgical restrictions for the Diocese of Palmerston North. This means implementing Holy Communion under both kinds, receiving the Host with both options (on the hand or tongue), the sign of peace with handshake, Holy Water being available and putting aside any other liturgical restrictions that may have been in place because of Covid-19. All Government protocols must still be obeyed”. The Catholic Parish of Napier will return to this liturgical practice from this Sunday 19 July. However, if you feel uncomfortable about receiving the ‘precious blood’ you do not have to receive Holy Communion under both kinds. You receive the fullness of the sacrament when you receive the Body of Christ. Also, in the spirit of ‘being kind’ and considerate to others we should not receive the ‘precious blood’ from the Chalice if we have cold or flu like symptoms. Welcome We again welcome Father James Lyons as the celebrant for the 10am Mass this morning. He will again have copies of his books ‘There is a time’ and ‘Good as Gold’ – a reflection of his 50 years of priesthood. They will be on sale with proceeds going to the restoration of Sacred Heart Cathedral. Thank you Thank you to Deidre Russ for her work with the RCIA (Adult Rite of Christian Initiation) team. Deidre has decided to take a break from this wonderful work and we sincerely thank her for the contribution she has made in preparing many candidates and catechumens for full communion into the Catholic Church.
