I do not glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Collect of the Day
Almighty God, you have created the heavens and the earth, and ourselves in your image.
Teach us to discern your hand in all your works and to serve you with reverence and
thanksgiving; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

                    THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD
First Reading: Proverbs 3: 1-6
My child, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments; for length
of days and years of life and abundant welfare they will give you.
Do not let loyalty and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on
the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and of
people. Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your
ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Psalm 119: 33-40 Parry
Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes, and I shall keep it to the end. Give me
understanding, and I shall keep your law; I shall keep it with all my heart. Make me go in the
path of your commandments, for that is my desire. Incline my heart to your decrees and not
to unjust gain. Turn my eyes from watching what is worthless; give me life in your way. Fulfill
your promise to your servant, which you make to those who fear you. Turn away the
reproach which I dread, because your judgments are good. Behold, I long for your
commandments; in your righteousness preserve my life.

                                                                                                  3
Second Reading: 2 Timothy 3: 14-17
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom
you learned it, and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to
instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is
useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that
everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.

Gradual Hymn: 283 (v.v. 1, 2s, 3) By All Your Saints Still Striving Ellacombe

Gospel Alleluia: 708

The Gospel: Mark 9: 30-37
They went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know
it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is to be betrayed into
human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again.” But
they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him. Then they came to
Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you arguing about
on the way?” But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who
was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “Whoever wants to be
first must be last of all and servant of all.” Then he took a little child and put it among them;
and taking it in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one such child in my name
welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.”
