It’s here at last – Open Week 2015 (29th May to 6th June) Building on the success of last year’s Open Week, starting on Friday the 29th of May, the 2015 Open Week promises to be a bumper week of golf and fun. Entry fees are keenly priced with special rates for some of the events. This year there will be two "Team of Two" competitions, one on each Saturday. This format is proving to be very popular nationally and is sure to be a hit in Carlow too – so book early. The “Player of the Week” is back – will defending champions John Barry and Agnes O'Neill retain their titles? The “Eagle on the 18th” returns and as there was no winner last year let’s hope we can truly say that the eagle has landed in 2015. Ladies: line up for the Wednesday “Ladies Day Event” – much more about your swing than your hat but a great competition which will be followed by the men teeing it up in the evening for a team of four. The 2015 evening competitions are especially good value so if you are working during the day, why not come along in the evening and bring a few friends? At €5 for a 9-hole competition with great prizes you’ll be onto a real winner. The Thursday of Open Week will see a “Mega Fourball” with some extra prizes and course surprises. If you haven’t booked your Open Week slots so far, then get moving as the timesheets are filling fast for all competitions. Tree Planting Early May saw a number of new trees being planted on the course. These replaced some of the trees we lost in the big storm in February 2014. The ones at the entrance into the 15th green are probably the most noticeable however there are others on the 4th and 7th . Some members were asking about the pink ribbons on trees – these are trees tagged to be planted in areas where replacement trees are now needed. Full credit goes to Tony Pender and his grounds team as well as to Donal Sinnott and Pat Doody for all of their voluntary work on the course. Squirrel Goes Bananas! This fast-moving, banana-snatching squirrel was recently snapped by Carmel Roche on the 12th green munching his lunch. Come Hail, Rain or Shine… it’s Always Golf Time A flash hailstone storm caught golfers by surprise on the course on the 19th of May. Here’s a picture of Jeannette Fitzgerald trying to figure out where she placed her marker! Deerpark Diary: Page 6 of 9
Boxing Clever And here are William Dowling and John French carrying out trojan work on the steps on the 8th tee box. Swapping the Pitch for the Fairway There was a warm Carlow welcome for former Soccer International and TV pundit Niall Quinn seen here driving off the 1st tee in on the 16th of May.
