The Dark Side of Being Social – how overly friendly dogs can become reactive. Saturday, Oct 17, 2:00 – 4:00pm. We all love having a friendly, social dog that likes other dogs, but there’s another less discussed side effect. Social dogs rush in to meet every other dog, making their behavior seem rude and threatening. They often ignore other dogs’ warning signs and blunder into conflicts. They are frustrated when they can’t meet every dog they see, leading to displaced aggression or outright reactivity. Watching our friendly dogs become reactive is both confusing and upsetting. However, our speaker is here to explain how to prevent it from happening. Page 5 of 8

CRITICAL NEED OF FOSTER HOMES QUARANTINE FOSTERS NEEDED – This is single biggest thing affecting our ability to bring in dogs. Our Rockville kennel, Sniffers, requires incoming dogs to have been out of shelter for 10 days prior to entering the kennel. We need volunteers who can foster a dog for anywhere from a couple of days to the full 10 days after transport. It's a low-commitment way to dip your toes into fostering. Most of the time it will need to be the full 10 days, but sometimes is shortened if they are in vet boarding after spay/neuter for a couple of days. If you think you might like to participate in this volunteer opportunity, please contact Dave Campbell at dog- coordinator@paw-rescue.org. BELLA – I am a one year old, 52-pound, American Bulldog mix (they think...but who really knows!). My friend, a PAW volunteer, rescued me from a pretty yucky situation where I was forced to live outside. Lucky for me, my friend from PAW came to meet me and, although I was pretty scared of her initially, she gave me these yummy treats so I figured she must be a pretty cool lady, I gave her kisses to show my appreciation. The nice people at PAW got me spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. Now I’m waiting to find my forever home! I’m still a bit scared because my world has been turned upside down...but I do warm up quite quickly to nice people! If interested in fostering BELLA, please contact Dave Campbell at dog-coordinator@paw-rescue.org. Page 6 of 8
PAW This Week October 6, 2020 EMMANUEL is a 4-year old, 46-pound hound mix. He is a pretty laid-back pup who enjoys spending time with people and giving kisses! His second favorite pastime is sniffing allll the smells! If interested in fostering EMMANUEL, please contact Dave Campbell at dog-coordinator@paw-rescue.org. ROCKY was recently returned to PAW after three years with his adoptive family. He is very scared and shy. The family decided they didn’t want to work on his fears. We are still learning about him, but know that he is a 75-pound Coon Hound and in desperate need of a stable situation. If you are interested in fostering ROCKY, please contact Dave Campbell at dog- coordinator@paw-rescue.org. ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND THANKS Columbia Kenneled Dogs –Liz Getsinger, Shayne Peredo, Natalie Frahler, Parvathy Prem, Erica Gates, Holly Schuh, Victoria Morris, Samantha Earle, Janaki Patel, Sijo Jose, Heidi Jose, Kyleen Tyler, Lalynn Kurash, and Patti Dix volunteered their time and their legs to help keep SEYMORE, COSMO, and BANDIT happy. PAW This Week October 6, 2020 ADOPTION SHOWS CANCELLED ADOPTION SHOWS CANCELLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE: Due to the COVID-19 State of Emergency declared by Governor Hogan, PAW has suspended all adoption events. Our mission remains unchanged during this period: we are a group of volunteers chartered to facilitate the rescue and adoption of homeless domestic animals, mainly dogs and cats, and place them in loving and stable homes. We are still in the business of saving animals! As such, • ADOPTIONS WILL CONTINUE. If anyone is interested in adopting, we ask that they apply via our website, and we will schedule a meet and greet. • SOME DOG WALKING WILL CONTINUE. If you are going a little stir crazy while you are keeping a social distance, consider volunteering to walk one of our dogs. Please contact our Dog Walking Coordinators to check availability. o College Park Animal Hospital (CPAH): Lou Montgomery dogfanatic@gmail.com o Preston Columbia Kennel: Tracy Crotty mtetm@yahoo.com. o Rockville Sniffers Kennel: Daniel Aldana dan_aldana@yahoo.com • FOSTER HOMES ARE ALWAYS NEEDED: You are at home anyway; wouldn’t it be fun to have a companion who would be eternally grateful?
