Keeping In Touch No. 22 27 August 2020 Welcome to Keeping in Touch No. 22! I’ve come to love Fergus the horse in Jean Abernethy’s cartoon we run. It explains the difficulties we have understanding what the ponies are thinking of us, and how tolerant they are of our efforts when we fail to understand them. See the latest below. The Peaceful Pony Paddock is such a wonderful new activity for lots of people. We had Alfie come along recently and he and his family had a great time with his very favourite pony. Lovely pictures which show just what happiness is generated by cuddling a pony at CRDA, and you can book in just by emailing us at info@cotswoldrda.org.uk. It’s suitable for the very young and the very old, and everyone in between. I haven’t thought about writing all those Christmas cards yet, but you might be tempted by our mincemeat recipe. That’s one of the things like Christmas puddings and cakes that does benefit by having months to mature. Enough talk of Christmas for now! Our Pooch and Pony Dog Show online is open now. Do look on the link to see all the details and you can see the photos of dogs already entered. Some fabulous images there to see! Start taking photos of your dog and send them. The closing date is 19 September but you know time flies! There are some great doggy raffle prizes too, including an animal portrait photograph printed on canvas of your pet. More details in this newsletter and on our website here: CRDA online dog show (Fergus appears by kind permission of Jean Abernethy – you can follow him here www.FergusTheHorse.com) v4 27 August 2020
This week we had a lovely Shout Out from Annie who has been following our Pony Roll of Honour: Thank you for the lovely newsletter again. Talking about ponies. 1965 - Leon, Bisto, Little Sister, Tony Leon, Bisto and Little Sister belonged to the De La Bere riding school along with the welsh pony I use to ride and who I took the RDA badges and Bronze, Silver and Gold awards on and his name was My Valentine (Val for short) I do have quite a few pictures of him. In the picture I sent you a while ago being awarded the Silver Award from Jackie Brutton I believe Leon, Bisto and Little Sister were there too. Tony belonged to Mrs May Bingley and she bought him to our riding in her latter years. I rode him and he use to buck me off when a mother of one of our riders use to bring in a brown pony for her daughter to ride. I stopped riding Tony after that. Hope you are all well. Annie x CRDA PONY ROLL OF HONOUR One of the sad things our team has to do now and then is to say goodbye to a pony and we are very sorry to say that Gaelen has passed away. We have always known that Gaelen would not be fit enough for work for many years more but he was a very willing, reliable and popular pony that many of our riders have enjoyed lessons on and we shall all miss him. Gaelen was on loan to us and his owner has been very kind, covering all the veterinary bills and donating his saddle to us, as well as money to help with feed costs for the winter. So a very big thank you from us all to Gaelen’s ‘Mum’ and an entry into our Pony Roll of Honour for Gaelen. P.S. Some good news though - because Gaelen and Dave were companions for each other, we now have Dave back at CRDA, so look out for him! v4 27 August 2020

FUNDRAISING FOR FEED! Wonderful people are helping CRDA keep the money coming in while our lessons are restricted! Alfie is 12 years old and has been riding with us for two years and knew from the website what it costs to feed one of our ponies. He suggested to his mum Lisa that they should raise funds to feed the ponies. Mum has her own catering company that’s famous for stunning cakes and afternoon teas. Lisa generously donated twenty prizes for an online raffle on her website and loads of people bought the two pound tickets. A magnificent £350 was raised! Prizes were all scrumptious by the look of the photos! Alfie is devoted to the pony Sunny he’s been riding on a Friday with his school. Lisa tells me that he just loves all animals. He raised money for the animals in the Australian bushfires last year. “He prefers animals to humans. Being with Sunny makes him so calm and after riding he is full of it. We came for a Peaceful Pony Paddock experience last week and we had a wonderful hour. Alfie was so proud to show us his pony, Sunny.” The experience was in the arena as it was raining and Alfie’s twin brother, Ashton, came along to meet Sunny with Lisa. “Everyone was so welcoming and friendly. I had never been before as Alfie always came with the school. Sunny was lovely and did some tricks for us! We were told lots of information about Sunny and got to groom him.” “Alfie was given a framed photo of Sunny when we left and when we got home he took it straight up to his bedroom! You guys do an amazing job and it gives people with needs something to do”. Thank you so much Lisa and Alfie for raising all that money for us, it was great to have you all come and spend time with CRDA and Sunny. v4 27 August 2020
Things to do in L CKD WN WOULD YOU PREPARE FOR CHRISTMAS NOW? Next month the cookery columns in some newspapers will be advising it’s the right time to make Christmas puddings and Christmas cakes - so they have time to mature in time for the festivities. It is not something I have ever done, but I used to think I should! Being at home a lot at present I really don’t have any reason not to make something ready for Christmas. One thing I would recommend you could make is mincemeat for the mince pies, and you can do it now. This recipe is so easy and the mince pies will be really succulent and not over- sweet. It is so much more delicious. This recipe was given to me by Pat about forty years ago and I’m still using it! Pat’s Mincemeat 14oz (350g) dried fruit. 6oz (150g) cooking apple grated. 4oz (100g) seedless grapes, halved if large. 4oz (100g) soft dark brown sugar. 1/2 teaspoon mixed spice. Grated rind and juice of a lemon. Double pub measure of brandy or whisky (50 ml). Have sterilised jam jars ready, with their lids, and waxed paper discs. Mix all ingredients together adding brandy or whisky last. No need to cook. Fill jars to the top and seal. Will keep in fridge or cool cupboard for months and the flavour will develop. SOMETHING TOPICAL NOW If you are inviting people for tea in the garden on a sunny day then a truly traditional thing to serve would be cucumber sandwiches. This recipe produces the ultimate in cucumber sandwiches! 2 teaspoons of white wine vinegar. 1/2 teaspoon of white sugar. Sea salt and black pepper. Sliced cucumber. Small handful of mint. Softened butter. Thin sliced brown or white bread Mix vinegar, sugar and little salt and pepper in a bowl and add cucumber. Set aside for 15 minutes. Chop mint very finely and mix with butter. Don’t add too much mint. Taste to check the flavour. Spread on each slice of bread. Drain the cucumber well and lay on a slice bread and add more pepper to taste. Sandwich together and cut off the crusts. Cut into quarters or halves. v4 27 August 2020
