You will also learn to understand the significance of your sexuality and the purpose of your life. You will grow to love who you are as God’s image and likeness. Because parents are not eligible to act as a sponsor, it is best to NOT use a parent as a proxy. ❖ Because of the deep connection between the two sacraments, the Church recommends that the candidate’s baptismal godparents be considered as Confirmation sponsors.1 Sponsor Responsibilities • help the confirmed person fulfill his/her baptismal promises faithfully, under the influence of the Holy Spirit • assist the candidate in the preparation for the sacrament to integrate the teachings of Jesus Christ into his/her daily life • encourage the candidate by growing in a faith relationship • accompany the candidate and present him/her to the Bishop at Confirmation 1 Code of Canon Law 893 CONFIRMATION NAME Your Confirmation name should reflect your new role as a mature Christian. Names of Saints are chosen to serve as patrons and models for those being confirmed. SAINT REPORT (For 7th grade students only) Your name gives you an identity. It tells others who you are. When you were baptized, your parents chose your name. Now that you are to be confirmed, it is time to choose the name you will take as a sign of your growth in faith. The tradition of taking on a new name to show a new role can be traced back to the Old Testament. When Abram was called to lead his people to believe in the one God, his name was changed from Abram to Abraham meaning “Father of many nations.” Again, in the New Testament, we find Simon’s name changed to Peter, meaning “Rock” because he was to become the rock upon which Jesus founded His Church. Your Confirmation name should reflect your new role as a mature Christian. Names of Saints are chosen to serve as patrons and models for those being confirmed. Candidates should choose a name not because of the attractiveness of the name, but because you are attracted to the virtues of that Saint and of the Christian life that Saint led. After you decide on a name, prepare a report on the saint you have chosen. Include the following information: On the COVER Sheet (the front page), include the following: ➢ SAINT NAME and picture if possible ➢ FEAST DAY as well as birth date and death date ➢ VIRTUES that were displayed in his/her life ➢ YOUR NAME printed on front page RESEARCH and REPORT, one page minimum, including: ➢ WHO is your Saint? • Life facts (birth, death, family, career) • Particular qualities or virtues for which the saint is known. ➢ WHY did you choose him/her? • What meaning or connection does this saint hold for you? • What do you like most about this saint? ➢ HOW does this saint serve as a role model of the Catholic faith in your life? • What virtues or traits do you want to imitate? • What lesson have you learned from this saint?
