FROM THE DESK OF JOHN POSTON Father of three • Commercial real estate professional Leading advocate of improving the lives of individuals with IDD The guy who brought tulips to Waxahachie Thank you for your interest in Tulipalooza, a fundraiser unlike any other! Even though I say the words “thank you” a lot, I do not think that I’ll ever be able to say them enough— there are so many people to thank. My son, Michael, was born 25 years ago with Down syndrome. Today, he is thriving in a safe, independent living community called Daymark Living in Waxahachie, Texas. He has a job he loves, enjoys taking classes and has more friends than me. In what continues to be a remarkably rewarding journey for me, my family and our incredible network of friends and associates, the effort to make the best life possible for Michael began early on. As a group we have never accepted the status quo. Quality early education options for Michael and other children like him did not exist, so we launched the Rise School of Dallas. Expanding the renowned early childhood education program for children with and without developmental disabilities has been more successful and gratifying than we ever dreamed. I am extremely proud to be part of the creation of sustainable fundraising entities for the Rise programs, including the Touchdown Club of Dallas, the Stallings Award and Tulipalooza. As Michael and his peers reached adulthood, we came to know that individuals with Down syndrome and other intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) want nothing more than to live life like you and me and be productive community members. Again, we learned that quality residential options were limited. So, with significant assistance from experienced experts, we opened Daymark Living. It’s a supported living community where adults with IDD can enjoy the feeling of independence in a secure environment while building friendships, pursuing further education and learning marketable job skills. The idea to plant a tulip garden in Waxahachie as a way to create jobs for Daymark residents and promote the community seemed kind of crazy at first. But a fact-finding trip to Holland convinced me that a large-scale tulip attraction like Poston Gardens could work. Believe it or not, the first local farming family I met, the Tammingas, happen to be natives of Holland. The Tammingas work with bulb experts Bill Van Houten and Thijs van Zaal. The thanks I owe these hardworking individuals is beyond measure. This upcoming spring, we are hosting Poston Gardens’ Tulipalooza at the Waxahachie Civic Center. In addition to other attractions, including live entertainment and plenty of sponsor tents, there will be a quarter of a million gorgeous tulips blooming from bulbs imported from Holland and planted by Dutch farmers. The 10-day festival is supporting 12 worthy charitable causes, creating a collaborative fundraiser not to be missed. I hope to see you there.

About the Tulips and Tulip Farmers Inspired by several trips to Holland and extensive research, Tulipalooza founder John Poston was ready to host a large- scale tulip garden in Waxahachie. All he needed was a local farming group to handle the soil preparation and planting. Not only did he find great people, he found skilled Dutch tulip experts right in his backyard. Holland-born Bill Van Houten oversees the care and growth of all plantings at Tulipalooza. Hand-selected bulbs are shipped direct from Holland and chilled to 46 degrees to ensure blooming by February or March. Bill has specialized in importing and exporting bulbs exclusively from Holland for more than 45 years. He co-owned the company that supplies bulbs to tulip festivals worldwide, including the Dallas Arboretum. Thijs van Zaal, an expert bulb farmer from Holland who has been in the business for more than 25 years, adds his invaluable insight. Fellow Netherlander and Waxahachie resident Kars Tamminga and his son Luke supply equipment for the planting process and direct the hardworking crew that makes the vibrant color come to life.
