CHINESE NEW YEAR
CELEBRATION EVENT 2020
Date : 20 February 2020
Venue : ISM Student Reading Room
Institute of Mathematical Sciences’ (ISM) Chinese New Year Celebration has
been held on 20.2.2020 at the Student Reading Room, Institute of Mathematical
Sciences. Dr. Ong Siew Hui as the Master of Ceremony invited all ISM staff as well as
retired staff to join together in the celebration.
Dr. Ong Siew Hui also invited Professor Dr. Ibrahim Mohamed as the Head of
Institute of Mathematical Sciences to officiate this celebration event.
This celebration event has been livened up with the singing of Chinese New
Year songs by all ISM staff. Some photos as remembrance of the Institute of
Mathematical Sciences Chinese New Year Celebration Event 2020 are included here.

MALAYSIA INSTITUTE OF STATISTICS GENERAL MEETING

Malaysia Institute of Statistics National Seminar
(SKISM) is an activity organised by the Malaysia
Institute of Statistics (ISM). The first SKISM was held
in year 2007. This year, the 14th SKISM is organised
by the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, University
of Malaya. The objectives of SKISM are to gather the
researchers and statisticians from various fields to
share knowledge, exchange ideas as well as widen
the networking between each other.
This seminar has been held on 25.2.2020 at DK Teratai, Kompleks Dewan
Kuliah Baru, Faculty of Science. About 300 participants have attended, consisting of
students and academic staff from the Faculty of Science.
This seminar has been officiated by YBrs. Professor Dr. Yong Zulina Zubairi,
Associate Vice-Chancellor (International), University of Malaya. Together here are

INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO
PROTON HOLDINGS BERHAD, SHAH ALAM
Date : 11 March 2020
Venue : Proton Engine & Transmission Plant, Proton Holdings Berhad, Shah Alam
On 11.3.2020, an industrial visit to Proton Engine & Transmission Plant, Proton
Holdings Berhad, Shah Alam has been made. Participants for this visit include
Professor Dr. Ibrahim Mohamed (ISM Head), Dr. Noor Fadiya Mohd Noor, Dr. Nur
Anisah Mohamed and Mr. Syed Ali Syed Ahmad Yunus (ISM Research Assistant) as
well as 3 representatives from Proton Engine & Transmission Plant. Proton
representatives have also brought ISM staff to visit the Proton engine manufacturing
plant.
This visit aims to create an industrial linkage between Proton and ISM as well
as University of Malaya, in general. In addition, this visit may also expose ISM
researchers to real-life problems in data analysis.
The objective of this visit is to increase the expertise for data analysis by
optimising knowledge, skills, networking and also facilities to produce the best and
profitable quality of services in research, academic and industry.
This visit is one of the activities under UM-CDACS. It may be a starting point
for ISM members’ research activity and to create cooperation with the industry.

PREPARATION OF SOP BY THE INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL
SCIENCES, FACULTY OF SCIENCE, UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA
Date : 18 May 2020
Venue : Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science
COVID-19: University of Malaya has resumed operation on 18.5.2020.
Development Unit Committee of Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of
Science, University of Malaya headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ng Kok Haur (Deputy Head
of ISM Development) who has been tasked to visit the surrounding areas and to
prepare several SOP for the Institute of Mathematical Sciences on 15.5.2020 in
preparation for operation of the Institute commencing 18.5.2020.
On 18.5.2020, the full operation of Institute of Mathematical Sciences started.
Professor Dr. Ibrahim Mohamed as the Head of ISM recited a prayer for safety to begin
the operation in ISM and may Allah bless as well as protect all ISM staff from the
danger of COVID-19.
Professor Dr. Ismail Yusoff, Dean of Faculty of Science and Assoc. Prof. Dr.
Hairul Anuar Tajuddin, Deputy Dean of Development, Faculty of Science have visited
Institute of Mathematical Sciences to view the SOP prepared by the Institute.

OUR CONDOLENCES
Date : 27 May 2020
Venue : Kuala Telemong, Hulu Terengganu
It is sad to inform that on 27.5.2020, Institute of Mathematical Sciences was
shocked by the news of 3 brothers who drowned at the river estuary of Kuala
Telemong, Hulu Terengganu and one of them is a student of Institute of Mathematical
Sciences from the Applied Mathematics Programme, namely Umar Iskandar bin Mohd
aged 21 years old.
On 28.5.2020, Dr. Siti Suzlin Supadi (ISM Deputy Head of Student Affairs)
together with the UMMA Club has organised a E-Tahlil programme for the late Umar
Iskandar bin Mohd through Google Meet. The Tahlil reading was led by Professor Dr.
Ibrahim Mohamed (Head of ISM). About 120 staff and Faculty of Science students
joined the programme online.
Contributions from staff and students have been passed on to the elder brother
of late Umar Iskandar bin Mohd through online bank transfer by Dr. Siti Suzlin Supadi
for a total of RM8,083. Condolences to the family from the Institute of Mathematical
Sciences.

MOTIVATIONAL TALK AND APPRECIATION CEREMONY
Date : 5 June 2020
Venue : QMEC Office, University of Malaya
Another Institute of Mathematical Sciences staff has retired on 8.6.2020,
Professor Dr. Suzeini Abd Halim. She has served at the Institute of Mathematical
Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Malaya for about 34 years. She has also
served as the Director of Qualtiy Management & Enhancement Centre (QMEC),
University of Malaya.
On 5.6.2020, the Institute of Mathematical Sciences has organised a
motivational talk titled “ISM E-SEMINAR 2020/1: WHAT IT TAKES TO BECOME A
FIRST CLASS MATH GRADUATE” by Professor Dr. Suzeini Abd Halim for ISM
students and lecturers for an hour, followed by an appreciation ceremony for her
online. About 70 staff and students participated in this talk and ceremony. Institute of
Mathematical Sciences would like to express the utmost appreciation and thanks for
the services by Professor Dr. Suzeini Abd Halim. Following are the photos taken
during the ceremony.

INCLINED ACTUARY / STATISTICIAN

A Guest Lecturing titled “Experience
Sharing of A Quantitative Inclined
Actuary/Statistician” has been held on
13.6.2020 through Zoom Meeting
delivered by Mr. Tan Kok How, Director
of Risk Management.
This program aims to share experience
in the areas of Actuary/Statistics.
Reception for this program was very
encouraging with the participation from
many Actuarial Science/Statistics
students as well as lecturers particularly
from the areas of Actuary/Statistics,
Institute of Mathematical Sciences, UM.
There were as many as 99 participants
in the Zoom Meeting.
Such lectures are very useful and will
benefit the students greatly to gain
related knowledge and to be used as a
guide in the future before/after starting to
work.

DISCUSSION OF INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES
STRATEGIC PLANS WITH PPSG DIRECTOR
Date : 6 July 2020
Venue : MM3, Institute of Mathematical Sciences
A discussion on the Institute of Mathematical Sciences’ Strategic Plans has
been held on 6.7.2020 at MM3, ISM. This discussion was attended by Professor Dr.
Ibrahim Mohamed as the Head of ISM, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ng Kok Haur (Deputy Head of
Development), Professor Dr. Angelina Chin Yan Mui (Deputy Head of Higher Degree),
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zailan Siri (Deputy Head of First Degree) and with invitation Dr. Tan
Ta Sheng and Professor Dr. Nor Aishah Hamzah (Director, Global Planning and
Strategy Centre (PPSG), University of Malaya).
This discussion was held to identify the future direction of Institute of
Mathematical Sciences in tandem with the trends in technology advancement and as
a preparation for the organisation of ISM Direction Workshop 2020 expected to be
held in September 2020.

SELAMAT HARI RAYA AIDILFITRI
CELEBRATION EVENT 2020
Date : 8 July 2020
Venue : DKM 1, Institute of Mathematical Sciences
Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri Celebration Event
this year for Institute of Mathematical Sciences was
held on 8.7.2020 at DKM1, Institute of Mathematical
Sciences. Professor Dr. Ibrahim Mohamed as the
Master of Ceremony has invited all ISM staff to
celebrate this event. To enliven this event, a Mr. &
Mrs. Raya competition was held. All staff were
encouraged to wear beautiful, creative and neat
Raya clothes to participate in this competition.
First place winners of the Mr. & Mrs. Raya
competition went to Dr. Mohd Azmi Haron and Mdm.
Asmah Tumin while second place winners were Mr.
Abd Malek Osman and Dr. Siti Suzlin Supadi. Prizes
were presented by Professor Dr. Suzeini Abd Halim
and Professor Dr. Kurunathan Ratnavelu.
This event commenced with a prayer
recitation by Dr. Mohd Azmi Haron and Professor Dr.
Ibrahim Mohamed as the Head of ISM gave a word
or two to officiate the event. The Head also thanked
Professor Dr. Suzeini Abd Halim and Professor
Kurunathan Ratnavelu for attending this event.
A meal with “Take Away” theme has been
served to all ISM staff. While all staff was enjoying
the meal, Mdm. Siti Zubaidah Makhtar has further
cheered up the event with memorable videos of
Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri Celebration event from
year 2015 till now.

UPGRADING PROJECT OF TEACHING/LEARNING/
SOCIAL ACTIVITY FACILITIES AT ISM
The Institute is currently upgrading several facilities for the benefit of students
and lecturers at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences. The main objective of this
project is to prepare the much needed facilities to provide the best level of teaching
and learning activities, as well as interaction between students and lecturers. It is also
to ensure that ISM becomes the place for students to discuss and interact outside of
lecture hours to build sweet memories studying at ISM and to instil a sense of
belonging even when they have become ISM alumni.
Among the on-going projects are Male and Female Surau on the Ground Floor
with the facility for ablution, Reading Room in the form of iCube as the space for
discussion and students activities as well as for rental, DKM1 as the main complete
lecture hall, MM4 Computer Laboratory on the Ground Floor as the Research Student
Laboratory as well as the Hallway/ISM Garden as a leisure space for
students/lecturers to interact.
