Role Description: Director of Sport Position Director of Sport The Director of Sport reports to the Principal through the Reports To Deputy Principal. Section Leadership & Teaching This position is classified as a Tier 1.2, Middle Leadership position under the Catholic Employing Authorities Single Enterprise Collective Agreement – Religious Institute Classification Schools of Queensland 2015-2019.* *Please note we are currently awaiting the FWC to approve a new proposed Enterprise Agreement. The successful applicant will be allocated an appropriate teaching load having regard to their position and teaching Teaching Load experience. Applicant must have experience in one or more teaching areas. Start Date Term 1, 2021 Each person who accepts a Middle Leadership Position in a secondary school shall be appointed for an initial period of four (4) years. A further four (4) year appointment will be made subject to a continued designation of the position and a satisfactory performance review at the conclusion of the previous four (4) years. After the completion of an appointment period of eight (8) Term of Appointment years, the employing authority may at its discretion advertise the position. * Note that this current role description is accurate for 2021 with proposed changes expected in 2022 and thereafter where a new role description will be made available. Position Purpose The Director of Sport is a Middle Leadership position at St Ursula’s College. Sport has an important role in school life at St Ursula’s and students are given many opportunities to participate in a wide range of sporting endeavours. St Ursula’s College embraces an exciting and diverse cultural inter-curricular program where students are offered a range of opportunities to immerse themselves in the sporting life of the College and the broader sporting community. Crucial to the Director of Sport role, is the ability to liaise effectively with all staff stakeholders, both within and outside the College. The Director of Sport will work to ensure that all developments and activities within the Sport Department are consistent with the Catholic/Ursuline ethos that underpins St Ursula’s College as expressed in the College Culture Statement, Strategic Plan, Curriculum, Learning and Teaching Frameworks and Wellbeing Frameworks. The College promotes a positive and balanced approach to sport, urging achievement of excellence and development of skills and a high level of achievement and competition where appropriate. This is always in a context of a high degree of participation, enjoyment, and a respectful sporting spirit. Recreational sporting activities are also strongly promoted, and the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle are highlighted. The Director of Sport is responsible for the organisation of all sporting activities conducted in the College, both within and outside school time. Key responsibilities of the Director of Sport include, but are not limited to: 1. Leadership and management for students • Encourage student involvement in a wide range of competitive, non-competitive and recreational sporting activities. • Identify sporting talents of individual students and subsequent support and encouragement of those students in the development of these talents through the ELITE Athlete Program. • Acknowledge individual and team sporting achievements through the appropriate channels in the College. • Implement the College Wellbeing Framework, where relevant, into the College Sport Program. • Establish a code of conduct for individual and team behaviour in sport, and monitor the implementation of this code of conduct. • Ensure students have opportunities to attend trials for representative level teams in their chosen sports. 2. Leadership of staff • Coordinate staff involvement in sporting activities across the College including, but not limited to working with the Human Resources Coordinator in recruiting casual coaching staff, overseeing the involvement of staff at Inter-House carnivals, liaising with the College’s Netball and Gym Administrator as required. • Ensure all staff (including coaches, volunteers) attend and complete all required professional learning and inductions including, the College’s Annual Child Protection and Professional Learning days. • Liaise with the College’s Netball and Gym Administrator to ensure; - all relevant administrative processes are adhered to; - effective management of school calendar, events, functions etc. as it pertains to sport; - prompt and effective communication to staff, students, parents; - venues bookings are managed promptly and effectively. • Provide guidance to staff members to develop and improve their expertise and involvement with sporting teams across the College. • Encourage staff to act as officials at Toowoomba Secondary School Sport, Darling Downs or State level competition as appropriate. 3. Leadership and management within the College Community • Represent the College on various sports committees, either at school or district level, or organisation of a nominee of the school for this task. • College representative at Toowoomba Secondary School Sport Association meetings. • Liaise with other Directors of Sport from other schools to promote sport within the local community. • Attend Inter-School sports competitions where practicable or arrange for attendance by a representative of the school. • Liaise with the Marketing Department for the College E-News, annual College Magazine, and when dealing with the local media. • Arrange College participation in relevant inter-school or regional sporting activities; including travel to venues away from Toowoomba. • Purchase, care and maintenance of all sporting equipment required by the school to fulfil the wide range of sporting commitments, in collaboration with relevant Heads of Faculty and Gym and Netball Administrator. • Monitor the use of equipment by students and staff. • Co-ordinate Inter-House Carnivals – Swimming, Cross-Country and Athletic Carnivals. • Organise and coordinate staff, student and parent involvement in invitation sports competitions run either by St Ursula’s or by other schools. • Initiate the development of new sports within the school as appropriate. • Responsible for the monitoring and development of the Sport budget in liaison with the Business Manager. • Maintain effective administrative processes to ensure: - all relevant administrative, child protection and recruitment processes are strictly adhered to; - effective management of school calendar, events, functions etc. as it pertains to sport; - prompt and effective communication to staff, students, parents; - venues bookings are managed promptly and effectively. • Liaise with the College grounds and maintenance staff re preparation of venues or repair of equipment as appropriate. • Liaise with Accounts staff and Business Manager regarding students charges. • Respond promptly and professionally to all grievances arising internally or relating to incidents at competitive sport or similar events, ensuring the Principal is kept informed. 4. Environment • Ensure that the area is characterised by an atmosphere of welcome, warmth and hospitality for students, staff, parents and other members of the College community. • Foster effective teamwork by using a consultative and collaborate approach and team building. • Ensuring at all times a focus on prompt and friendly service. • Promoting the College positively on all occasions. 5. Communication • Ensure effective written and verbal communication to all stakeholders. • Foster effective teamwork by using a consultative, collaborative and inclusive approach and team building. 6. General • Work flexibly as part of a team in the pursuit of the College’s Mission, Values and Strategic Direction. • Promote the benefits of a St Ursula’s College education at all times. • Demonstrate support for the College’s philosophy, polices and procedures, core values and commitment to the Ursuline and Catholic ethos; • Maintain a degree of flexibility in working hours and duties in order to meet the requirements of this position and the College’s changing operational and business needs; • Accept that the College reserves the right to modify the position from time to time (including this Role Description) to meet its operating needs; • Assist and relieve in other positions from time to time; • Undertake other reasonable and relevant duties within skills, knowledge and capabilities as directed by the Principal or their delegate. Selection Criteria (Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge & Experience) Essential Criteria • Must hold relevant teaching qualifications and current registration with the Queensland College of Teachers. • Must have relevant teaching qualifications in one or more teaching areas. • Demonstrable leadership experience in a school context. • High level of verbal communication skills. • Ability to build and sustain positive relationships, providing prompt and professional service to College community. • Displays personal drive, integrity and an aspirational leadership style. • Excellent management, communication, relational and operational skills necessary to build lead teams and community. • Maintain confidentiality and reliability in meeting commitments.
