ENVIRONMENT & SUSTAINABILITY IN THE THIRD WORLD Host Institution Hans Raj College, set up in 1948, is a “Star” accredited college under the University of Delhi. Over the years, the college has produced distinguished alumni, who have made marks in diverse fields. It has acquired for itself a position of excellence in practically all spheres of collegiate life and is a nurturing ground for an individual's holistic development to make effective contribution to the society. The college comprises of research centers for specific and inter-disciplinary research. It is ranked amongst the best colleges for higher learning in Science, Liberal Arts and Commerce. The Institute offers various UG, PG and Certificate courses taught by well qualified and experienced faculty. Department of Chemistry The Department of Chemistry, Hansraj College has a learned and dedicated faculty complemented with the professional and motivated laboratory staffs. Rasayanatva, the Chemical Society under the aegis of Department of Chemistry has been propagating the interests of the students in the various chemical developments and scientific researches. It aims at building scientific interest among students by conducting regular seminars to enhance and help the students implore the interesting sides of Chemistry and vast career options that they might have in Chemistry. About the Seminar At a point where climate change is the inevitable end to mankind, it is highly important to be aware about what is happening and what is going to be the outcome of such a defining issue. The environment has been bearing the consequences of our negligence and it is time to resolve our mistakes. Third world countries are emerging major consumers of resources and should ensure the procedures are not causing any harm to the environment. Being a third world country ourselves, it is highly significant that we carry out our development keeping in mind the greenness and sustainability of the processes. Sustainability and sustainable development are the only ways to go about it. Thus, adopting Green methods to conserve environment and finding solutions to the Environmental problems is the need of the hour. Aim of the Seminar The objective is to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man -made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change. This requires the researchers from multiple academic disciplines to assess the challenges that our world is facing and finding the solutions on a common platform. Eminent speakers of the seminar would apprise the audience with the recent advances in selected themes of Sustainable development possible under aegis of science and environment related issues and promote information exchange on related topics. This seminar will infuse research interest among young generations to work towards making chemistry and science as a whole greener to work towards our ultimate goal of a sustainable environment. It will provide platform for students, teachers, researchers to discuss and share knowledge and skills for the work required to be done in order to attain a sustainable and secured environmen t.
Focus Areas The scope of the conference is not limited but covers broadly the following areas: • Climate change • Toxic substances and chemicals • Waste management • Diversity in finding energy sources • The availability of water • Biodiversity • Air pollution • Ozone depletion, ocean health, and deforestation. Abstracts are invited on work and life of such amazing women who have taken great strides in the field of pure sciences and have inspired generations thereafter. • Are industries using Green Methods a far-sighted reality or an upcoming trend? • Green to Gold: Redefining sustainability
Abstracts of about 150 words should be sent electronically to chetnagupta@hrc.du.ac.in. It should be typed in Times New Roman, 12-point size, single space with maximum 5 key words. Name, institutional affiliation, e-mail and mailing address should be mentioned while sending the abstract. In case of abstract being selected, the participant will be notified and further instructions will be provided. Cash prizes will be awarded along with Certificate of Honor for the first, second and third position holders. All the participants will be given a Certificate of participation.
