National Sports Policy, Annual Conference, National Fitness Day, DLP Training, Supplier Updates & more National Sports Policy Launched The launch of the new National Sports Policy 2018-2027 took place on 25th July, which we attended at the invitation of Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross TD and Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD. In his foreword Minister Ross mentions Ireland Active in relation to the successful implementation of the policy: The Government and its agencies cannot deliver the aims of this policy in isolation. Central to the achievement of the planned transformation will be our National Governing Bodies of Sport, our Local Sports Partnerships and the various representative sporting organisations, specifically the Federation of Irish Sport, the Olympic Council of Ireland, Paralympics Ireland, Ireland Active and the CARA Centre amongst others. The combined use of the expertise, knowledge and insight of this sporting fraternity will be essential for the successful implementation of this policy. We will therefore prioritise and enhance their funding to reflect the important contribution they make to Irish society. The policy is positive for the leisure, health and fitness sector as it outlines a strategy on sports participation, high performance and capital investment for the next decade. It also suggests a tax relief on gym equipment which will be of particular interest to operators and suppliers alike. The policy contains 57 actions, many of which are relevant to our members and which we called for in our submissions to the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport in 2017 (Submission 1 & Submission 2). Key points relevant to the sector include- The doubling of investment in sport; including participation and sports capital programmes An annual Sports Capital Programme Funding for delivering schools PE aquatics programme, such as facility hire Funding for new Large Scale Sport Infrastructure projects, with a dedicated fund, which can include swimming pools The development of a National Swimming Strategy, which will include consultation with Ireland Active on the National Quality Standard The subvention of Local Authority facilities to assist in the delivery of participation programmes The prioritisation of individual sports such as running, swimming and cycling all of which promote lifelong physical activity.
Recognition of personal exercise as the most popular sport amongst adults, and the introduction of a tax relief for gym equipment Recognition of the private sector's contribution to participation in sport The policy also includes the establishment of a Sports Leadership Group (SLG) which Ireland Active are to be included in. It is proposed that the SLG will comprise representatives from relevant Government Departments, Sport Ireland, the wider sports sector, local government and the commercial leisure sector among others. Active engagement and collaboration with the wider sports sector is considered to be of particular importance, and representation is envisaged from, among others, the Federation of Irish Sport, Ireland Active, LSPs, disability sports and volunteers. Ireland Active welcomes the publication of the policy and we look forward representing our members and taking part in its implementation over the coming years (Ireland Active Press Release).
