Hospice Happenings On January 11 at the Barclay Hotel, Ty Watson House was chosen by the group '100+ Women Who Care - Alberni' to receive $15,000+ from their members! Hospice worker Nathalie tries on the new red gum boots we bought at “Treasures” here in Port Alberni. Nurses need to wear waterproof footwear when showering residents. Thank you donors for helping us purchase our “Christmas Shoes”! In December, Codfather Seafood Fishmarket set aside a portion of their sales for Ty Watson House! It's not often that we have a husband and wife team volunteer at Ty Watson House. Welcome Wayne and Cindy! These folks recently moved to Port Alberni and have both joined up to help us serve the community in a very important way. In February, we were thrilled to receive 8 hand-made quilts from the Parksville Comfort Quilt Society in conjunction with the ladies from the Parksville Quilt House Quilters Guild!
Ty Watson House has stood up extremely well over the 105 years since it was built, but the fir floors on the nursing floor finally succumbed to age this year. Ryan at The Flooring Depot helped us to choose a high quality, commercial grade flooring that has a beautiful finish and is perfect for heavy traffic areas - which the resident rooms are. The Flooring Depot ordered in the product and kept it ready until we were ready and able to go ahead. When we recently received the $1000 donation from the Alberni Valley Foundation and the $15,000+ donation from 100+ Women Who Care - Alberni, we were off and running! The floors are gorgeous and we want to thank everyone who helped us complete this project. Our floors are beautiful and the rooms look clean, brighter and cozier. In January, Zelda from Shar-Kare arrived at the House with a donation for our pantry! Thank you to everyone who chose Ty Watson House as their favourite charity, and our Black Ty Gala as their favourite charitable event! Thanks also to Alberni Valley News for hosting the Reader's Choice Awards again. Check out these amazing baked goods from our volunteer Anthony this past February!
ACP Day 2018 Have you ever wondered who you should talk to about your wishes for your future health care – really asking yourself, who needs to know? Answering these questions is known as Advance Care Planning (ACP) – a process that supports you and your family to prepare to make decisions about your future health care. It involves understanding and sharing your values, beliefs and wishes regarding health and personal care. This information is used during conversations with health-care providers about the treatments and care you receive, to help you get the care that’s right for you. Take Russ Cook’s story. The British Columbian was strong, fit and healthy. An avid skier and road cyclist. But at age 58, he unexpectedly collapsed and ended in a coma. His family rushed to his side. After the medical diagnosis was known, his wife Karen knew what to do. You see, she had an incredible gift of love from her husband of nearly 33 years – a gift that enabled her to make a decision on his behalf without conflict or guilt: He had expressed his wishes to family and friends should something medically catastrophic happen. He had an Advance Care Plan. “It was an incredible gift to me that I didn’t have to second guess what he wanted, or if I would be doing the right thing,” recalls Karen. “In the chaos, the trauma, the overwhelming emotional turmoil, it created clarity when our lives were turned inside out.” You can read more about Karen and Russ’ story on our website at www.bc-cpc.ca/acp. April 16 marks Advance Care Planning Day across North America. It’s a day to remind you to ask yourself, “Who needs to know?” By doing so, you’re realizing that you need to have conversations with your family and health-care providers (such as your family doctor and pharmacist). This will be your “team” – led by your Substitute Decision Maker – that will to make decisions for you if you cannot. Read about the steps to effective Advance Care Planning on the BC CPC website at www.bc-cpc.ca/acp, or join us at one of Alberni Valley Hospice Society's FREE Advance Care Planning Workshops. Book Review The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom In this short book, Mitch Albom tells the story of Eddie who was a man that worked at an amusement park, had a wife and fought for his country. Eddie’s story includes his death and most of the tale is told from Heaven where Eddie meets five people from his life. The first person Eddie meets in heaven tells him that is the purpose of heaven, to help you understand your life on earth and find peace. He also tells Eddie that the people that move in and out of your life while you are alive have a purpose. Each has a reason though you may not see it. They are also their own story at the same time they are part of yours and though you may part ways and continue with your respective stories, each of you has influenced the life of the other in a permanent way. There are no random acts and we are all connected. As each person Eddie meets imparts their wisdom to him, they help him understand the impact of his life. They are then able to move on to another level of Heaven, released by the imparting of information and understanding to another. As his story unfolds we are given snapshots of Eddie’s life as he experienced it and also versions of that same life viewed differently, from the perspectives of those five people whose lives had interacted with his. Mr. Albom has a relaxed way of writing and the characters are realistic and familiar. The message I came away with after reading “The Five People You Meet in Heaven”, was that our actions affect others, often in ways that we may never know about and that is part of being Human. I will leave it to you now to read the book and discover the lessons Eddie learned from his five people and find your own message. If you read and enjoy this work, you may enjoy Mitch Albom’s other work titled “Tuesdays with Morrie”. Both are available from the Alberni Valley Hospice Society Library. Thanks for reading, Kerrilyn Check out the Hospice Library! There are books available to read and all you have to do is sign them out, (and make sure you return them of course!). It is a great resource for people of all ages, including material on Bereavement and Grieving, Self-care and Caregiver resources, and End of Life Issues. If you know of someone of any age that is affected by loss, there may be something they can read from the Hospice library that could help. There are titles for children and youth as well as adults. Check it out at our main office (3088 3rd Ave)!
