While she and husband Rich never bought or sold a car at an auction, they enjoyed viewing what I call “the circus” and the chance to potentially rub elbows (maybe not advisable now!) with both auto and non-auto celebrities who may have been attending. I’ve not attended such an auction, but hope to do so some day. Mecum may have the most auctions within a day’s drive of St. Louis. Its recurring auction schedule lists auctions in Indianapolis, Chicago, Louisville, and until last year, Kansas City. With the current pandemic, some of the auctions may be postponed or canceled. Phyllis’s article discussed attending the Kansas City Mecum auctions in Decembers past, which they had attended the last six years, taking the Amtrak train from Washington, MO to Kansas City. Phyliss has now informed me that Mecum will not have its auction in Kansas City this December. This decision was made before any cancellations due to COVID-19. Kansas City was one of the smallest auctions Mecum hosted, and it likely did not make economic sense for it to continue. 2
When the televised collector car auction phenome- battery pack, branded as Ultium, is expected to non started, I was in gear-head heaven. Each deliver up to 400 miles of range as well as Level 2 January I spent Friday night and afternoons on and DC fast-charging. (cadillacsociety.com) Saturday and Sunday glued to the couch in front of the TV, watching the auction “live”. With the number of televised auctions proliferating, and the amount of hours broadcast per auction expanding more quickly than my waistline, I had to modify my viewing technique, else I would never leave the couch. Initially, I started recording the auctions on my DVR, so I could fast-forward through the commercials. Now, I have the need for speed. I view the auctions in fast-forward, but at a speed that still allows time for visual identification of each vehicle. If a Cadillac or other car of interest appears, I back up and watch that particular car’s bidding and listen to the announcer's commentary. This method has saved enough time to allow me to take up worm farming, just in case there should be Lyriq conceptual renderings provided by Cadillac a meat shortage during this pandemic . (I had a neighbor across the street try worm farming in the late ‘70s. I guess he saw the ads in the back of Popular Mechanics and thought he was going to make a fortune. And...the immediate next-door neighbor tried raising chinchillas for fun & profit!) CADILLAC EV CROSSOVER Although its April media debut in concept form has been delayed because of restrictions on large gatherings due to COVID-19, production of the new Cadillac EV crossover “Lyriq” is still on schedule, expected to kick off sometime in the second half of 2021 as a 2022 model. The all-electric crossover will be similar in size to the current Cadillac XT5, and will compete with the Tesla Model Y. A new CONVERTIBLE TOP CARE Ron Funk forwarded a copy of the April Allante-XLR Chapter newsletter because an article and product caught his attention. The article was about convertible top care. Several members of the Allante-XLR Chapter have been using RaggTopp convertible top care products and are happy with the results. This product is recommended by the Haartz company, maker of convertible top materials. I’ve not used the product but may give it a try. The website is https://wolfsteins.com. Click on the “convertibles” link and then on any product; there will be a link to videos available demonstrating how to use their prod- ucts. But, be aware, there are two different protectants available—one for vinyl and one for fabric tops. 3
