Haere mai, welcome to your club. Lifeguards have been patrolling the waters of Whangamata for 70 years with many wonderful lifeguard volunteers donating their time to keep the people who recreate at our magnificent beach, safe. We have a growing surf sport squad and each year we teach core survival skills, coastal confidence, leadership and decision making to around 240 Junior Surf children. This handbook holds all the information you will need as the parent or carer of a Junior Surf Nipper, Cadet or Rookie – our lifeguards of the future. Have a read through and please let us know if you have any questions. We’d love a chat. 2

SAFETY FIRST The Junior Surf programme is run by a group of qualified lifeguards who will each take an age group for the session. These coaches are easily identifiable on land wearing red shirts and name badges, as well as in the water with high visibility orange rash shirts. For safety reasons, your child will be signed in and out at each session. Please ensure that this process is adhered to. If your child is under 7 you will also be required to sign in as a parent helper for your child and stay for the duration of the programme. 5:1 Ratio Supervision As another strict mandatory safety requirement, we require a minimum supervision ratio of 1 adult in the water per 5 children. On rough days, we will increase this number. If we cannot reach the required ratio, the water events will not be able to go ahead. 1:20 Ratio of qualified supervision. In addition to the ‘in-water’ 5:1 ratio we must also have 1 qualified guard per 20 children in the water. One of the best ways to help at the beach is to become a lifeguard! 200m Swim Badge All nippers MUST complete their 200m badge before they can compete in water events which go beyond waist depth. This badge demonstrates that they are confident in the ocean and capable of returning to shore if they are separated from their equipment. This test must be repeated yearly under the supervision of a Whangamata coach. There will be many opportunities to complete this during the season so keep an eye out on the noticeboard or Facebook page for information regarding this. 8
