Port of Yamba Yacht Club Across the Bar Issue 275 May 2021 Commodore’s Report Hi Everyone The last two weeks have been full time sailing for both the crew of Circe and Welsh Dragon as we both sailed South to participate in the Port Stephens 2021 sailing regatta. For me especially, who has done most of my sailing in the Indian Ocean, it was a very lovely experience to learn about some of the East Coast. I was particularly blown away by the beauty and perfect sailing available in Port Stephens, what wonderful cruising ground with beautiful scenery and surrounded by deep and clear bays. I understand that last week we did not have enough boats to start with some members going away on driving holidays. Hopefully this week we can continue with our regular Wednesday racing calendar. As we move towards the end of our racing season I would like all members to give the executive feedback on what changes they may like to see in the next sailing season so they can be incorporated in our schedule. Cheers and good sailing Ian Across the Bar 2 May 2021 Issue 275
Port of Yamba Yacht Club Across the Bar Issue 275 May 2021 Vice Commodore’s Report Hi Members The Autumn midweek series is having a slow start with only one race completed out of the first 5. River conditions following the rain and floods have been the main issue and hopefully we can now get the remaining 6 races in before the end of the season. I’ve been looking at tides and dates for the next offshore race and Saturday May 8th has a low tide at 12.20 pm so we will add that to the calendar for a race. Also Saturday May 22nd has a low at 11am so we will add that in as well for another race so hopefully 2 offshore races in May. Welsh Dragon and Circe have just returned from the trip to Port Stephens and a combined crew sailing on Welsh Dragon competed in the Cruising division of the Sail Port Stephens regatta. There were 120 yachts in 5 divisions and 3 passage races held over 3 days for the cruising divisions and another 3 days of racing following for the IRC and PHS divisions. Unfortunately for the first 2 days were had very light winds with predominantly downwind courses which didn't suit our boat at all. The last days race started with 15- 20kt winds and it looked like we would have had a good result except for a navigational error by the skipper which resulted in us going the wrong side of a sand bank mark for some time and having to double back. In any case it was a great trip and regatta and many thanks to everyone that sailed with me to make it such a good 2 weeks away. Regards Graeme Across the Bar 3 May 2021 Issue 275

Port of Yamba Yacht Club Across the Bar Issue 275 May 2021 Port Stephens Odyssey As often happens, plans can be subject to change and many details of the planned voyage to Port Stephens by Welsh Dragon and Circe did not come to pass. Denise Bruschweiler was set to join Circe for the trip down to Port Stephens but unfortunately, she sustained a fractured collar bone in a bike accident and could not take part. Peter Hackett was able to negotiate some time away from work and joined Ian Johnston as crew on Circe. The first night away was spent at Coffs Harbour Marina. The next stop was Trial Bay but a persistent NE wind into the night and a short, annoying, choppy wave action drove us out of that anchorage at 11pm and we had an overnight trip extending into the next day to get us to Port Stephens at 10pm. So much for day- sailing only! It was good to arrive early and have some R & R before joining Graeme and Fiona on Welsh Dragon for the Commodore’s Cup Regatta. Peter Hackett had to leave the crew and was picked up by his son and delivered to the nearest station to catch a train home. Circe and Welsh Dragon had moorings opposite the Bay Sailing Centre at Soldier’s Point. It was a very pretty and protected mooring. Graeme has provided details of how the regatta panned out. On the evening of the last race day Hamish Robertson arrived to join Circe’s crew. Circe stayed on for a day after the regatta to explore Port Stephens a little before departing at 8pm on 22nd April. An overnight sail with 15 to 20 knot W wind and 1.5 - 2 meter swell extending into the next day saw Circe coming into Port Macquarie harbour. The mild weather conditions at the end of this leg made the bar crossing uneventful. Next morning, we departed at 4am and set sail for Coffs Harbour. Coffs is a good harbour to enter and again the mild weather made things easy. On the leg home to Yamba we had gentle breeze from the SW and SE and little swell. We took a detour to check out North Solitary Island for the benefit of Ian and Hamish who had not seen it. We arrived at Yamba at Across the Bar 5 May 2021 Issue 275
Port of Yamba Yacht Club Across the Bar Issue 275 May 2021 about 5pm with another uneventful bar crossing due to the mild conditions. It was a great experience and very satisfying to give Circe some sea time. Soldier’s Point Anchorage and Bay Sailing Centre at sunset Across the Bar 6 May 2021 Issue 275

Port of Yamba Yacht Club Across the Bar Issue 275 May 2021 Treasurer’s Resignation I would like to inform all members, that I will resign as Club Treasurer as of 30.6.2021. It has been a honour to be trusted to hold that position, but it has been also a struggle for me as I am not comfortable with computers. Also I would like to let you know, that Kathy and I are to move back to Greater Melbourne to be closer to our ever growing families. Now we are very busy preparing our beloved property for sale. I will not be able to be present at the AGM, since we are travelling after the 15th of June to Melbourne in order to celebrate my 80th Birthday with our families. Afterwards we will be towing our caravan to Darwin, returning home to the Bungawalbin by August 6, 2021. I hope another member will put up her/his hand to take over the Treasurer's position. Peter Saunders is willing to help as he assisted me and also introduced a simplified Accounting System. I am very grateful for Peter's expert help. On this occasion I would like to thank all Club members for the trust in me and hope to see you on the water.
