Kia ora koutou te whānau ō Burnham, On Friday, 43 of our Year 4-8 learners headed to Porters for a day of skiing and snowboarding. Everytime we go to the ski field I am amazed by our children’s determination to master a new skill, this year was no different. I would like to thank the team of parents who came along to ensure our learners had a awesome day out. There are 90 learners from our school performing in the 2018 Cultural Festival. These students have been working hard to learn the new routine. There are words and actions to learn. If you forgot to order tickets through school these can now be purchased from Ticketek. The Koru Games are taking place on Tuesday 18th to Thursday 20th of September. This event is for Achievement - Angitu Year 7 and 8 learners. We will have students participating in the following sports: Volleyball, Basketball, Ki-o-Rahi and Lawn Bowls. If you have an interest in any of these sports and are able to support our Year 7 and 8 students please contact myself or Kate Ebrahim. Next week, on Wednesday the 15th of August our teachers and myself are on strike. This was not an easy decision for teachers and principals throughout the country. This video clearly explains just why the teachers and principals of New Zealand are striking on Wednesday 15th of August 2018. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_MYtPhxMsU&feature=share Message from the BOT The Board of Trustees can’t provide teaching for students during the upcoming strike. The NZEI has advised the Burnham School, Te Kura o Tiori Board of Trustees that the principal and teachers at our school will be taking strike action on Wednesday 15 August 2018 from 7am to 7pm. The Board has carefully considered the availability of teaching staff, and unfortunately decided that we can’t provide the normal teaching services during the strike. It’s important that you make alternative arrangements for the care of your child/children on the day of the strike. The school will need to close during this strike. I know that this is inconvenient for parents and students alike, but please be assured that student safety is our main concern. Thank you for your understanding. Please contact Marcia Jones if you have any queries relating to this decision. Marcia Jones Chairperson Board of Trustees marciajones@burnham.school.nz Message from Busy Bumbles: Busy Bumbles will be running a Holiday Programme day on Wed 15th Aug - The day of the NZEI teachers strike. Welcome to a fantastic opportunity to grow your parenting skills. A free parenting programme for parents of 3 – 8 year old children. Incredible Years is a great way of meeting other parents and helping one another out with ideas and ways to manage the ups and downs which often comes with parenting. This programme gives parents the opportunity to come together each week and learn ways to help promote their children’s social and problem solving skills. Parents also develop approaches to use at home with challenging behaviours, such as aggressiveness, ongoing tantrums and acting out behaviour. The programme encourages parents to strongly focus on positive behaviours, to spend quality time with children, coach social and emotion competencies, set clear boundaries and expectations with selective use of consequences and puts an emphasis on encouraging children and parents to use calming preventative strategies – it is a supportive and empowering programme within a safe and confidential framework.
