Term 1 Week 3 Page 2 DROP EVERYTHING AND READ! The need has never been greater to build the reading competency of our students. To support this, Wauchope High School has implemented Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) as a daily activity to support and promote the skill of reading as a means to learn as well as a recreational activity. We aim to support every student to use these valuable 15 minutes to practice the skill and get lost in the art of reading. After roll call, all staff and students spend 15 minutes reading quietly. A text of their choice is preferable. As some students are not avid readers this is sometimes a hurdle so we encourage those reluctant readers to come to the library and IN THIS get some help in selecting an appropriate piece of reading material. Students may read magazines, novels, comics, and instructional materials – ISSUE anything appropriate. PAGE 3 -Welcome Year 7 We encourage parents to support this initiative to maximise the students! educational outcomes for students by having conversations about what they are reading, helping them find and choose reading material, or PAGE 4 reading with them if the opportunity arises – we want them to succeed! -2021 House Captains If you need help or want more information, contact the team in the library. Term 1 Week 3 Page 5 STAFF SPOTLIGHT Miss Ashley Thomas is an English and Drama teacher and Year Advisor for Year 7. Miss Thomas is one of only 30 teachers across the country to be selected for the Bell Shakespeare Program. Interviewed by Year 7 students Kye, Rodney and Spencer What is the Bell Shakespeare Mentorship? “Basically they selected me to be one of 30 teachers in Australia to go Sydney for an intense week of workshops and learning from the best Shakespeare actors and directors. I’ll learn how to deliver Shakespeare in a school.” When do you go? “It’s next month, the end of March. It’s very exciting!” Top 5 Shakespeare plays? “My absolute favourite is Romeo and Juliet. My next favourite is Twelfth Night, it’s a really good one. The next favourite would be Macbeth, then Taming of the Shrew and Hamlet.” Why do you like teaching? “I love teaching because I get to see students get excited about learning new things.” Why do you like English so much? “There are so many reasons! English is like the basis of everything we do. We get to look at writers from over 500 years ago and see what their thoughts were and where their brain and imagination went when they put words on paper. We get to read that!” Do you like books? “Love books, love reading. I’ve always been a big reader.” Who’s your favourite author? “That’s a really great question but a really hard question. I have to say for upper literature it’s definitely William Shakespeare. I love that he’s written plays, poems and stories. He’s just written all sorts of things and his stories are still relevant 500 years later. For more junior authors I absolutely love Anh Do. I think he’s a fantastic author.” If you could have a superpower what would it be? “I’ve thought about this one so many times, and it would definitely be the ability to read minds.” If you were to write 3 books, what would they be about? “I love dystopian fiction. Usually we write happy endings and I’d love to write one that’s not. The next would be a biography on someone famous like Elton John. My third book would probably be a teenage fiction. I’d love to do the cliché one where they go through hard stuff in high school, and they have a breakup but then they get back together in the end. I think I’d have a lot of fun writing that one.” Would you prefer acting or English? “That’s like asking me if I want cake or chocolate Spencer! That is a really hard question. I think English just has the power to take you where you want to go, and I would give up chocolate for a book. I really really would because I just love reading so much.” Email: wauchope-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au Website: http://www.wauchope-h.schools.nsw.edu.au

Term 1 Week 3 Page 8 SWIMMING AGE CHAMPIONS 12 Years: Nate and Emilie 13 Years: Jethro and Talia 14 Years: Nash and Alivia 15 Years: Ben and Kate 16 Years: Harry and Zaliah 17+ Years: Cameron and Gretchen HOGS FOR HOMELESS TOUR On Tuesday, Wauchope High School was visited by NSW State of Origin Coach Brad “Freddy” Fittler, along with 10 other riders, including former Wauchope High student Ian Schubert, as a part of a charity ride known as Hogs for Homeless. The reason for our selection as a part of the tour was so that Fittler could do a live cross to another former Wauchope High student, Allison “Ally” Langdon, who recently took up a position as host presenter on the Today Show, alongside Karl Stefanovic. Unfortunately, Ally sustained quite a serious knee injury a few days earlier in an accident during filming for the show, and was not able to be on the show for the cross. A number of our senior students, including the leadership team and various sporting representatives, showed their support for both the charity and Ally, as a former Wauchope girl who is a great role model and inspiration to our students. Moments before the cross, Fittler, who is a noted joker, lined Stella up with a line to “have a go” at Karl Stefanovic. With no time to rehearse, Stella managed to deliver the line to perfection, giving both Fittler and Stefanovic a good laugh. It basically suggested that Ally should be paid very well to have work with, and “put up with” Karl. When the cross finished, all of our students received a football from the NSW NRL Development Team, many of which Fittler personally signed. He then had photos taken with a number of students from the Support Unit. Ian Schubert took the opportunity to see his name on one of the school’s Honour Boards, where he won Sportsman of the Year in 1974. He was selected in the Australian Schoolboys Rugby League team whilst a student at Wauchope, before moving to Sydney where he played what we now can the NRL for the Roosters, Western Suburbs and Manly. Schubert was Man of the Match in the 1975 Grand Final win by the Roosters and also played 4 Tests for Australia. In later years, he became an auditor for the NRL Salary Cap authority, famously finding breaches at the Melbourne Storm which lead to them being stripped of two premierships.
