5 NOVEMBER 2021 Ponsonby Primary School Te Kura o te Rimu Tahi Message from the Principal Namaste parents and whanau, This week is the celebration of Diwali which is one of the biggest and auspicious festivals celebrated by Hindus all around the globe. The festival of lights signifies peace and joy, the victory of good over evil, and light over darkness every day. It was great to hear two of students from Rm 5 Week 3 Michale Raham and Keshav Mahraj sharing a beautiful story about Diwali and sharing their experiences of how Term 4 they celebrate on this special day. I hope you are well and that we receive some clarity next week on the reopening of Sibling schools and how we will be able to operate in some sort of capacity. Enrolments If you have a younger The teaching staff are really looking forward to having our tamariki back in some form, sibling of a Ponsonby even if it is staggered days, times etc… Once we have been given some guidance from Primary student turning 5 either in 2021 or the ministry we let you know how this will look for our school. 2022 that you would like to enrol. Please End of Year Reporting contact our Office Manager early to start the process. As you know, throughout the second half of 2021, learning has been very different from khobday@ponsprim.sc what we usually experience. Teachers, learners and their whānau have found themselves hool.nz in a range of situations meaning that learning has looked different from household to household, with each family working through their particular highs and challenges. Our end of year assessment and reporting process normally consists of standardised testing and, most importantly, a Best Fit Judgement based on the progression the children have made in their learning. You will be familiar with the mid-year and end-of- year reports. Our mid-year judgements were up to date and made with confidence as we had the children at school on-site. As I said in my first weekly newsletter, we are not reporting against the NZ curriculum levels for our end-of-year report, the report will have more emphasis on our school values/competencies and a general comment on distance learning. Earlier this week you would have all received information for this year's knowathon. As we are not able to run Guy Fawkes this year which is an important fundraiser for our school, we do hope you can support our school with this year's knowathon . Mr Naera has worked extremely hard with the questions and he has sourced some amazing prizes. With the support of our board, we have decided to fund an extra teacher in 2022 which will be funded through our school donations and fundraising efforts. Our reasoning for this
5 NOVEMBER 2021 being that we have seen the impact covid lockdowns have had on our tamariki. With extra staffing we are able to provide smaller class sizes which allows for an improved student to teacher ratio and more individual time with teachers for your children, students get to know each other better, teachers can tailor instruction more individually with less disruption. This is an optional learning activity but we do hope you can support our school. A big thank you to all the children who sent in their photos and videos for the house challenges this week. We will update you with house points next week as we still have a few more photos coming in today. The children can choose to do as many of these challenges as they would like. Each week we will announce the house that is currently leading the competition. There will be a special reward for the top house when we are allowed to return to school. Each activity is allocated a number of points. Students will need to send your evidence (Photo or a video) of the challenge to Mr Naera, Mrs Robins or Mr Rama, depending on what year level they are in. Year 1 and 2: srobins@ponsprim.school.nz Year 3 and 4: srama@ponsprim.school.nz Year 5 and 6: fnaera@ponsprim.school.nz Week 4 Challenge: 5 point Challenge: Fly a paper plane 10 point Challenge: Cook or bake one of your favourite food (Extra points if you use your house colour) 15 point Challenge: Clean the inside of your family car If the children want to take part in these challenges, they can send their videos or photos by the following Friday at 3pm.
