ROEBUCK ACADEMY WEEKLY NEWSLETTER Keeping you up-to-date Friday 12th February with what's going on! Safer Internet Day 2021 This week we celebrated Safer Internet Day 2021 in true Roebuck Academy style! Safer Internet is celebrated globally in February each year. This year, it took place on Tuesday 9th February and promoted the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people. This year, Safer Internet Day (SID) focused on exploring reliability in the online world. The internet has a range of amazing information and opportunities online, but how can we separate fact from fiction? We ensured that SID 2021 empowered our young people to take control of their online lives and to feel that they can harness and use the positive power of the internet for good. For more information, please visit: https:// www.saferinternet.org.uk/safer-internet-day/2021 A huge thank you to Miss Williams, our Computing Lead, for organising the Safer Internet celebration! Keeping our children safe, especially in such uncertain times, is our number one priority! DEVICES DOWN DAY As part of our whole-school focus on Children’s Mental Health, Roebuck Academy held it’s first ever DEVICES DOWN DAY! The day was a roaring success where children experienced a whole range of practical and hands-on activities. We were impressed with the effort that children placed into their learning in school, as well as at home, but most of all their DREAMS collages. Everyone rose to the challenge and we now have amazing D-R-E-A-M-S to display at school. Well done everyone! Nursery - Acorn & Chestnut Nursery had a great ‘Devices Down Day’ and were super busy all day taking part in lots of different activities. We made ‘I love you’ cards to show how thankful we were to someone we love, we played a memory game and we went for a senses walk in our lovely school grounds. We had already been learning about our 5 senses in the weeks beforehand, so we used this knowledge when exploring. We talked about what we could see, hear, smell and touch on the walk. Afterwards we decorated gingerbread men and used our sense of taste when eating them. They were yummy! DETERMINATION, RESPECT, EXCELLENCE, ALTOGETHER, MOTIVATION & SAFETY
ROEBUCK ACADEMY WEEKLY NEWSLETTER Keeping you up-to-date Friday 12th February with what's going on! Reception - Oak & Willow ‘Devices Down Day’ proved to be a very busy but enjoyable day for Reception children. We started our day with cake decorating and drawing our self-portraits. In the afternoon, we went on a scavenger hunt to creature corner and made bird feeders to encourage the local wildlife to visit our school. We finished the day with a disco. It was great fun! Year 1 - Elm & Maple We finished our Design and Technology topic which was all about making alien puppets. They looked amazing but a little weird! We then made chocolate rice krispie cakes and made DREAMS collages with items we could find and locate inside our classroom . Year 2 - Pine and Birch We loved our ‘Devices Down Day’ in Year 2. We made gingerbread, play-dough and painted portraits. Our gingerbread tasted amazing and we decorated it with melted chocolate. We used our play- dough to create Chinese symbols and letters. Our Portraits are for a whole school project, and we based our work on the artist of Paul Klee by mixing tints. Our portraits were abstract. In Science we have been discovering habitats down in creature corner! Year 3 - Cherry & Pear In Maths, we have been learning about different types of angles. We have stretched ourselves into finding angles inside shapes using geo-boards. The children at home have also been learning about different angles and have been using JamBoard to draw their own angles of different sizes. Well done everyone! Year 4 - Cedar & Rowan For ‘Devices Down Day’, the children got into the school ethos at home by creating their own letters using items from around the classroom and their own homes to create letters for the school values. On the day, we also focused on doing good deeds for members of our family and wrote letters of gratitude to NHS workers. DETERMINATION, RESPECT, EXCELLENCE, ALTOGETHER, MOTIVATION & SAFETY
ROEBUCK ACADEMY WEEKLY NEWSLETTER Keeping you up-to-date Friday 12th February with what's going on! Year 5 - Juniper & Sycamore As part of our Anglo-Saxon topic, Year 5 have made honey, oat and spice cakes. The children learnt that as sugar hadn’t been discovered yet, the Anglo-Saxons sweeten their puddings using dried fruits and honey. They would have been cooked in a heavy iron saucepan with a lid over a fire, however, in Year 5 we used an oven! The children at school, and those that made them at home, really enjoyed making these oat cakes and everyone seemed to enjoy the finished product. However, we did think they needed a bit more honey to help stick the oats together as they were very crumbly. Year 6 - Elder What a great half term in Year 6. Despite the challenges we have managed some great collaborative work between those at home and those in school and have continually been impressed with their maturity towards their learning. We have been learning about ‘Greta Thunberg’ in Literacy and have been composing a persuasive speech about climate change. The children have then created their own persuasive speeches based on a theme of their choice. We have also been doing lots of art this half- term and have been creating a range of still life compositions using different media: sketching pencils, charcoal, oil pastels and even rubbers to create a negative impression. During Geography learning, we have learnt about the process of erosion and have created our own animations to show the impact on the coastline. Our RE focus this half-term was around how Muslims show their commitment to their God. This has resulted in some great in-depth discussions around what commitment looks like and the 5 pillars of Islam. Well done all, to another fantastic half-term of learning! HALF-TERM HOLIDAY HOMEWORK We have set homework across all key-stages for half-term. The focus is centred on ‘Being Active’ over half-term which will support everyone’s mental-health. Please see the individual letter and flyer sent home today from Mr. Downie which features a challenge in honour of Sir Captain Tom Moore. Herts for Learning E-Safety Parent Newsletter As we move our way through a third lockdown many children are spending more time indoors and perhaps more time online too. The internet is an incredibly useful tool to support children’s learning and can bring benefits to their mental health and well-being. When children spend more time online they may, however, be exposed to greater online risks. NSPCC has pulled together some really useful advice for parents and carers which has been provided in the HFL newsletter. Please check your emails as this was emailed onWednesday. https://www.thegrid.org.uk/eservices/safety/news/newsletters/ index.shtml Freya During the month of January, Freya completed a 50 mile cycle challenge. Even with the bad weather, she did not give up and used the exercise bike at home to complete her challenge. Freya absolutely demonstrated our school core value of Determination! We are all very proud of her! DETERMINATION, RESPECT, EXCELLENCE, ALTOGETHER, MOTIVATION & SAFETY
ROEBUCK ACADEMY "Try to be a rainbow in Friday 12th February someone else's cloud" Rainbow Art Display “Try to be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud” - Maya Angelou As part of ‘Devices Down Day’, we asked the children at home and at school to create a self-portrait. They had to create their artwork on a A5 piece of paper and use any medium they had access to. Each year group was given a certain colour. When the portraits were put altogether, it created a rainbow of faces! We are so impressed with the standard of art produced. It is lovely to see home learners and school learners coming together to create a collaborative piece. We are ALTOGETHER! NHS Letters For ‘Devices Down Day’, KS2 wrote thank you letters to the NHS. Each child carefully thought about how they wanted to say thank you and reasons for this. It was such an incredibly touching moment as all children expressed how they were genuinely thankful for all staff at the NHS. These letters have all been sealed up and are being delivered to Lister Hospital. E-Safety On Tuesday 9th February, it was Safer Internet Day. Every child in school and at home was exposed to learning based on keeping safe online. The children were reminded of the SMART rules we follow at Roebuck as well as focusing on a picture book with themes of understanding how important it is to be safe online. EYFS and KS1 focused on, ‘Webster’s Friend’ and KS2 focused on ‘Chicken Clicking’. The learning has been displayed on our new E-Safety display which features a huge tube of smarties!
