Extended Learning at The Magna Carta School Spring-Summer 2019
Extended Learning and Enrichment Week Are you making the most of our school’s full and varied Extended Learning Programme? Extended Learning covers any activity which you participate in outside of curriculum time which promotes and enhances your learning. Here at The Magna Carta School we recognise the significant impact that learning beyond the classroom has on students’ social and academic development. To support this we offer a fantastic and diverse extra curricular and enrichment programme for all of our students which is in place from 8am in the morning until at least 6pm in the evening. There are currently more than 100 Extended Learning activities taking place before school, at lunchtimes and after school and over 800 of our students choose to regularly participate in at least one activity a week. The programme of activities ranges from Instrumental Music lessons to Sports, from Art, Pottery and Yoga to Sailing, from extra student support sessions to an opportunity to achieve additional qualifications like the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. We boast one of the best Extended Learning programmes in the county and have activities to suit every taste. We also frequently ask students what activities they would like to see in school which has led to the formation of a Thai Boxing Club, Guitar Club and Rock School in recent years. In addition to these regular activities, throughout the year there are a number of day and evening trips to theatres, subject based field trips and residential trips both in the UK and overseas all of which enhance the students' learning outside of the classroom and school environment. An important week in our school calendar is Enrichment Week which falls in July each year. During Enrichment Week the normal school timetable is suspended and students in Years 7 to 9 are given the opportunity to engage in a variety of different learning activities whilst students In Year 10 complete a week of work related experience. Residential learning weeks take place both in the UK and abroad, with students visiting France, Austria Italy, Spain, America, Morocco, Germany and UK venues in the last three years. For students preferring to stay closer to home there are a variety of activities to choose from on site including a Cultural Week, Film Making, Animation and Art Masterclasses, a Rock School, Environmental Workshops, Active Soccer Coaching, Design Workshops and TV inspired Masterchef activities to name just a few. This gives students the chance to try something new and to dedicate a significant amount of time to an area of learning which interests and enthuses them. More details about Enrichment Week 2019 (8th to 12th July 2019) will be published in late October 2018. Ofsted has continually praised our school’s Extended Learning Programme and our students have always enjoyed the activities we offer. We are therefore very proud to be a school which promotes out of classroom learning. “The curriculum provides good breadth and balance. Innovative improvements ensure that it is tailored to the needs of individuals and groups of students and promotes good outcomes. This is further enhanced by the outstanding range of extracurricular activities and visits on offer.” Ofsted 2010 “The enrichment programme, together with students’ personal, social and health education, helps to promote equal opportunities and develop a cohesive community with a tolerance toward others. The school promotes students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development very well.” Ofsted 2013
