‘Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has become an established part of healthcare
for many Australians. CAM is estimated to be used by up to two out of three Australians, and
accounts for $3.5 billion in expenditure every year. It is noteworthy that the annual patient
expenditure for CAM exceeds expenditure on Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) medications
by $1.8 billion.’

Manual deep-tissue massage and the manipulation of the spine, joints and
surrounding tissue to alleviate back pain, joint problems and muscular disorders.
Acupuncture The wellbeing of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and
connective tissues functioning together smoothly.
A state of inner stillness. It involves focusing on an object, breathing or verbally
repeating a word (a mantra). With practice, the individual can reach a meditative
Aromatherapy state, in which they experience inner peace and stillness. The benefits include
strengthening of the immune system, improved sleep, lower blood pressure and
increased motivation and self-esteem.
The use of pure essential oils to influence or modify the mind, body or spirit. Acts
in accordance with holistic principles by strengthening the person’s vital energies
and self-healing capabilities, thus having a direct effect on the mind and body.
Chiropractic Essential oils can be inhaled through vaporisers and applied through baths and
massage. It is used in the treatment of depression, sleep disorders, stress
symptoms and anxiety.
Focuses on the holistic treatment of the individual by seeking to address
symptoms of illness as well as resolving underlying causes of illness. Recognises
the importance of developing a partnership with clients, because it is important
Iridology for the individual to take responsibility for making positive lifestyle changes. They
will often adopt a variety of therapies tailored to meet individual needs. These can
include massage, relaxation techniques, herbal medicine and nutrition.
Practitioners use herbal medicines and various mind and body practices, such as
acupuncture and tai chi, to treat or prevent health problems. Chinese herbs are
prescribed to normalise imbalanced energy, or Qi (pronounced ‘chee’), that runs
Naturopathy through invisible meridians in the body. Whether or not the philosophy is
believed, studies have shown it to be successful in treating a range of disorders,
particularly gynaecological and gastrointestinal disorders.
Based on the relationship between the spine and the functioning of the nervous
and musculoskeletal system. They ‘adjust’ the spine, using specific rapid thrusts

Medicine overall it is beneficial to the immune system. Forms include remedial, therapeutic,
sports and Swedish.
The analysis of the human eye to detect signs of the individual’s physical,
Yoga emotional and spiritual wellbeing. A range of naturopathic treatments can then be
prescribed to improve general and immune system health.
