April 19-30, 2021 Book now! Every year, the Hong Kong International Young Readers Festival brings writers to schools for talks and workshops, creating unique opportunities for young people to meet some of the world’s greatest storytellers. In 2019, we worked with more than 40 schools to 10,000 students. This pack contains the line-up of 5 Chinese authors through our partnership with Bring Me a Book Hong Kong to include Chinese author events. Schools receiving funding from the government are eligible for our School Subsidy Scheme. Depending on the application, we may subsidise up to 50%.* To organise an author visit to your school, please fill in the booking form in this pack and email Angela Leung at angela@bringmeabook.org.hk.
LOCAL SCHOOLS RECEIVING GOVERNMENT FUNDING (GOVERNMENT/ AIDED/DSS) CAN APPLY FOR SUBSIDY PLEASE COMPLETE THE SCHOOL SUBSIDY SCHEME APPLICATION (LAST PAGE OF THE SCHOOLS PACK) AND SUBMIT IT ALONG WITH YOUR BOOKING FORM. PLEASE NOTE Talks last for an hour (inclusive of Q&A). The minimum number of students per session is 20, although we will prioritise sessions for schools that book for higher numbers of students. All authors featured in this pack will be hosting online talks. Please refer to the pricing sheet for details.. Bookings start at a minimum price of HK$1,500 for classes for 30 or less. All talks will be in Mandarin, except for Shana Cheung who will be presenting in Cantonese. For non-subsidised schools, the price per session is capped at a maximum of HK$7,500 (i.e. you will not be charged more than HK$7,500 regardless of the number of students participating).
YU LI-QIONG 2011 2011 100 Yu Li-Qiong graduated with a BA in Literature and MA in Dramatic Art from Nanjing University. She is the author of A New Year's Reunion, Gently Open the Door, Auntie's Tree, Maomao, Come Back Home and Xiaomei's Remark. A New Year's Reunion was the first Chinese children's book to achieve international recognition. It won the first ever Feng ZiKai Chinese Children’s Picture Book Award (2009), was nominated as one of the Top Ten Best Illustrated Children’s Books by the New York Times, and was chosen as one of the 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing in 2011 by New York Public Library. The book has been translated into English, French, Japanese and Korean. Yu-Li Qiong is currently Chief Editor of Oriental Baby and is dedicated to editing picture books, publishing essays, poems and fiction and is a huge advocate for early childhood literacy. She is a frequent speaker on literacy in China and Hong Kong. AGE GROUP 6-8
余麗瓊 Yu Li-Qiong Author name: 余麗瓊 Yu Li-Qiong Location: China Talk: 一個孩子的守望 A Child Keeps Watching Age Group: 6-8 一個孩子的守望 孩子對大人的守望是世界上最無助也最深情的守望,《團圓》是毛毛對爸爸的守 望,《小美的記號》是小美對姨姨的守望……通過朗讀並分享這兩本書背後的故 事,讓孩子們感受文學折射出的一幕幕生活影像和一段段情感意味。 A Child Keeps Watching A child watches her parents with a sense of love yet helplessness. "A New Year's Reunion" describes Maomao's affection towards her father and "Xiaomei's Remark" expresses the affection that Xiaomei feels for her Auntie. By reading aloud these two books, children are able to experience everyday life and emotions through literature. HUANG LI 1989 1998 2004 AGE GROUP 6-8 Huang Li is the award-winning author of An's Seeds and The Grandmother's Horse. She studied at the Traditional Chinese Painting Department of the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts in 1989 to learn the art of portraiture from Mr. Liu Wenxi. After graduation, she worked on children's book illustrations, and designed the bindings and layouts for children's books and magazines. She established the Xi'an Sun Baby Illustration Design Company in 1998 and concentrated on research of children's picture book painting and creating illustrations. Since 2004, she has served as Art Director of the magazine Youth Science World.
黃麗 Huang Li Author name: 黃麗 Huang Li Location: China Talk: 讓愛與陪伴看得見 Let Love and Companions be Seen Age Group: 6-8 讓愛與陪伴看得見 在這次講座裡,畫家黃麗將用互動的方式與小學生們共同閱讀《外婆家的馬》的故 事,及三年創作歷程的點點滴滴。畫家黃麗將分享她與作家謝華老師在創作中如何 從生活中汲取養分,並將生活的感受轉化到這本書裡,以及書裡書外的相互陪伴和 相互看見。 Let Love and Companions be Seen During the talk, illustrator Huang will read aloud "The Grandmother's Horse" for primary school students and share her three-year creative journey. She will also elaborate on how her and her teacher, Mr. Xie, was inspired in their everyday lives and how they transformed these into stories which shows the love and care between a grandparent and her grandchild. DAI YUN 2018 Top 5 2019 Top 3 Top 6 2019 2019 AGE GROUP 6-8 Dai Yun is the renowned author of The Wandering Chicken, The Plane Tree and Sudan’s Horn. Her books have won several awards, including Hsin-Yi Picture Book Award and Wenjin Book Award of Top 5 Original Picture Books by the National Library of China in 2018. Created at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, her fairytale book Do not Scroll Around during Chinese New Year received more than one billion views to bring comfort and strength to a large number of little readers and their families during these unusual times.
戴芸 Dai Yun Author name: 戴芸 Dai Yun Location: China Talk: 繪本中的壯麗生命 See The Magnificence Of Life Through A Picture Book Age Group: 6-8 繪本中的壯麗生命 繪本作家戴芸將分享她屢獲多項大獎的作品《蘇丹的犀角》,帶領我們走進世界上 最後一頭雄性北白犀牛蘇丹傳奇的一生。作者將分享赴非洲收集所得的珍貴影像資 料,並通過繪本故事展現大自然的壯麗,反思人類與野生動物的關係。 See The Magnificence Of Life Through A Picture Book In her award-winning book, Sudan’s Horn, Dai Yun tells the legendary story of Sudan, the last male northern white rhino on earth. She will share the precious images taken with Sudan on her trip to Africa and explain the magnificence of nature while reflecting on the relationship between human beings and the wildlife. LIN PO TING 15 16 17 20 30 AGE GROUP 6-8 Lin Po Ting lives in Yilan with his family and three dogs. He loves drinking black coffee when he creates children's illustrations and picture books with acrylic paint and crayons. He won the 15th, 16th, 17th and 20th Hsin-Yi Children's Literature Awards and was shortlisted for Best Picture Book of the 30th Golden Ding Award. He is also the author and illustrator of the book Let's Go to the Zoo, My Dear Brother which earned the Feng Zikai Chinese Children’s Picture Book Award.
林柏廷 Lin Po Ting Author name: 林柏廷 Lin Po Ting Location: Taiwan Talk: 生活好繪本 Life As A Picture Book Age Group: 6-8 生活好繪本 繪本作家及畫家林柏廷將分享他的得獎作品《一起去動物員》及《一個像海的地 方》,讓孩子們細細感受一個觸動生命核心的故事及對海洋動物處境的關懷。作者 更會分享這兩本書的創作過程,如靈感的來源、草圖及彩圖的繪製。 Life As A Picture Book Award-winning children's author and illustrator, Lin Po Ting, will share his stories "Let's Go to the Zoo, My Dear Brother" and "A Place Like the Sea", allowing the children to feel extreme emotions - from the sibling's love and affection to the loneliness and loss of separation, as well as having care and kindness for ocean animals. SHANA CHEUNG 2011 Excellence Award ? 2017 2021 ! AGE GROUP 6-12 Shana Cheung is a Hong Kong-based author of children’s picture books. Shana graduated with a BA in Visual Communication from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and an illustrator, graphic designer and a trainer for parent-child workshops. She won the Excellence of Hong Kong Designers Association Global Design Award in 2011. Her book Can you dong dong dong? won the Best Hong Kong Picture Book Creation Award, and her book was also shortlisted in the 5th Feng Zikai Chinese Children’s Picture Book Award in 2017. Her new book Bub Bub Bub Bub! My Granny has been shortlisted for the 55th Bologna Children's Book Fair's Illustrations Exhibition in March 2021.
張韻珊 Shana Cheung Author name: 張韻珊 Shana Cheung Location: Hong Kong Talk: Shana Cheung’s talk Age Group: 6-8 啵啵啵啵!我是魔法王 繪本作家及畫家張韻珊將分享她的全新作品《啵啵啵啵!我是魔法王》,讓孩子們 細細感受書中婆婆的堅毅好學精神。作者更會分享這本書背後的創作故事。 Award winning children's author and illustrator, Shana Cheung, will share her new book "Bub Bub Bub Bub! My Granny” and explore themes of perseverance and motivation through Grandma’s character in the story. She will also share the creative journey behind her book. 故事簡介: 孫女第一次在外婆家過暑假,外公帶她去游泳池習泳,在一旁守候的外婆也躍躍欲 試,並在這一年學會游泳。比起游泳池,外婆更愛在海中暢泳,活像魚一樣徜徉其 中。大海治癒外婆的腰痛,也安慰了她的心。 Book description: It was the first time for a granddaughter to spend her summer vacation with her grandparents. Her grandpa took her to the swimming pool and her grandmother also learned how to swim with her. In addition to the swimming pool, the grandma also loved swimming in the sea. She could paddle around in it like a fish and it helped ease the pain from her body and her soul. This talk will be in Cantonese.
