Attend the artist orientation dinner on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at 7:30 pm. A lottery draw at the orientation will determine each team’s sculpture location in the carving area. Carvers must supply their own tools and equipment. Access will be given to one 120V 15-amp outlet (North American Standard) . Electric chains saws may be requested by international competitors on the application form. Carvers may use only one electrical tool at a time. No generators, props, coolants or coolers (with the exception of dry ice, if needed, as approved by the judges and supplied by the Festival), colouring or special lights are permitted. Each competitor must follow all participation rules and guidelines according to nationally established rules and guidelines as administered by the judges. Safety First! In order to ensure the safety of all participants, health and safety measures are applicable. No helpers are allowed in the carving area unless approved by a judge. All allocated blocks of ice must be used and carved on all sides. Snow made from your original allotment of ice may be used, no artificial props, decoration or colouring of ice is allowed. No sponsor logos or material may be displayed in the carving area or on the sculptures except sponsor identification on clothing. Organizers reserve the right to disqualify carvers who produce sculptures that are considered to be in poor taste or commercial in character. Artists must remove all tools, cardboard, extra ice and debris from their allocated carving area at the end of every competition day and ensure that the carving is ready for judging at the end of the competition. The Festival’s site staff will be available to assist with cardboard, ice and debris removal. Competition organizers are not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen tools and equipment. WEATHER The Boardwalk Ice on Whyte Festival’s competition will be held in a covered tent. This will mitigate conditions for very warm or very cold temperatures. All decisions regarding carving in adverse weather conditions will be made at the orientation by the judges and artists. This decision is final and will be adhered to by the competitors for the duration of the competition. SAFETY In order to ensure the safety of all participants, health and safety measures are applicable for this event. Artists must wear personal protective equipment. Safety boots, pants or chaps with ballistic nylon inserts, chainsaw gloves, hearing protection, protective eyewear and any other relevant health and safety equipment are strongly recommended. The judges are aware of the importance of health and safety at this event and, should a lack of personal protective equipment or dangerous work methods be noted, they will issue warnings which may result in point reduction or disqualification.
