PRAYERS
Prayer of the Faithful

We have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one, and so we make
our prayer to the Father for the needs of all the world.
For the safety of persecuted Christians everywhere, as they proclaim repentance for the
forgiveness of sins in the name of Jesus Christ, let us pray to the Lord.
For nations to end to the use of violence and force, forsaking them for peaceful resolutions to their
differences, let us pray to the Lord.
For those in every nation who suffer from injustice and the failures of their political systems, let us pray
to the Lord.
For all the infants and young children being baptized this Easter
season, as they grow in faith through the love and support of their
family, friends, and faith community, let us pray to the Lord.
For farmers and farm workers who plant and tend the crops and
foods that nourish and sustain us, let us pray to the Lord.
For all those who are sick, for all who suffer from COVID-19, and
for all who have died, let us pray to the Lord.
For all the prayers that we hold in the silence of our hearts; for all
our intentions spoken and unspoken, let us pray to the Lord.
O God of all truth,
hear the prayers of your newborn people
and strengthen your Church to answer your call.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Risen Lord.

FULFILLMENT
It is interesting that during the Easter season, when we do not hear a reading from the Old Testament, it
becomes so important. This is particularly true today. Peter’s speech begins with a prayer formula familiar to
Jews: “The God of Abraham . . .” (Acts 3:13). It likewise contains the potent phrases “Holy and Righteous
One” and “mouth of all the prophets” (3:14, 18). Peter was stating in no uncertain terms that the law, psalms,
and prophets had been fulfilled in Christ. This is reinforced by Jesus himself in the Gospel passage, when he
states that everything in the scriptures (to the early Christians “the scriptures” were what we call the Old Tes-
tament) had to be fulfilled. Above all, Jesus and Peter both emphasize that we are witnesses to all of this,
and are sent forth to bear witness to it in the world. The Latin Missa, from which our word “Mass” comes,
means “sent” (as in “mission”). As we leave Mass today, let us remember to be witnesses to all that has been
fulfilled in the risen Christ.

FEAST OF FAITH
The Second Reading
The Liturgy of the Word generally follows a consistent pattern of three readings and a psalm. The second
reading is always taken from one of the New Testament epistles or the book of Revelation, and generally is
not intentionally aligned with either the Gospel or the first reading.
Where would we be without these letters in which great saints and apostles like Paul, Peter, James, and
John share their wisdom and pastoral good sense with the early Christian communities? It is in these letters,
even more than in the Gospel narratives, that we learn what it means to be church: to live with each other, in
the world yet not of the world, in these days after the Lord’s resurrection. Each New Testament letter was
written by a particular leader for a particular community at a particular time. We are reminded of this at the
beginning of the proclamation—“A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians,” or the Corinthians,
or the Thessalonians. These texts were shaped by their particular historical and cultural context, but at the
same time, through the liturgy, these letters are written to us, here, today. They speak to the realities of Chris-
tian living no matter where—or when—we live. They are truly “the word of the Lord” for us.

18 Tháng Tư—Ðôi Tay Cầu Nguyện
Albrecht Durer là một họa sĩ và điêu khắc gia nổi tiếng của nước Ðức vào thế kỷ thứ 16. Một trong những
tác phẩm nổi tiếng nhất của ông đó là bức tranh "Ðôi tay cầu nguyện".
Sự tích của họa phẩm này như sau: Thuở hàn vi, Durer kết nghĩa với một người bạn chí thân. Cả hai đã thề
thốt là sẽ giúp nhau trở thành họa sĩ. Ðể thực hiện ước nguyện đó, người bạn của Durer đã chấp nhận làm thuê
làm mướn đủ cách để kiếm tiền cho Durer ăn học thành tài. Theo thỏa thuận, sau khi đã thành công, Durer
cũng sẽ dùng tiền bạc của mình để giúp cho người bạn ăn học cho đến khi thành đạt.
Thế nhưng khi Durer đã thành tài, danh tiếng của anh bắt đầu lên, thì đôi tay của người bạn cũng đã ra chai
cứng vì lam lũ vất vả, khiến anh không thể nào cầm cọ để học vẽ nữa.
Một ngày nọ, tình cờ bắt gặp đôi tay của người bạn đang chắp lại trong tư thế cầu nguyện, Durer nghĩ thầm:
"Ta sẽ không bao giờ hồi phục lại được năng khiếu cho đôi bàn tay này nữa, nhưng ít ra ta có thể chứng minh
tình yêu và lòng biết ơn của ta bằng cách họa lại đôi bàn tay đang cầu nguyện này. Ta muốn ca tụng đôi bàn
tay thanh cao và tấm lòng quảng đại vị tha của một người bạn".
Thế là kể từ hôm đó, Durer đã để hết tâm trí vào việc thực hiện bức tranh đó. Ðó không phải chỉ là một tác
phẩm nghệ thuật, nhưng là tất cả tình yêu và lòng biết ơn mà ông muốn nói lên với một người bạn. Bức tranh
đã trở thành bất hủ, nhưng càng bất hủ hơn nữa đó là tấm lòng vàng của người bạn và tâm tình tri ân của nhà
họa sĩ.
Phúc Âm kể lại cuộc gặp gỡ cảm động giữa Chúa Giêsu và một người đàn bà mà mọi người đang nhìn bằng
một con mắt khinh bỉ, bởi vì bà ta bị xếp vào loại người tội lỗi... Bất chấp mọi dòm ngó và xì xào, người đàn
bà đã tiến đến bên Chúa Giêsu, đập vỡ một bình dầu thơm, đổ trên chân Chúa Giêsu và dùng tóc lau chân
Ngài.
Nhiều người xì xào, tỏ vẻ khó chịu. Chúa Giêsu đã lên tiếng biện minh cho người đàn bà và Ngài đã tiên
đoán: nơi nào tin Mừng được loan báo thì nơi đó cử chỉ của người đàn bà
được nhắc tới.
Ðôi Tay Cầu Nguyện
Qua lời tuyên bố trên đây, Chúa Giêsu muốn nói với chúng ta rằng: tất cả
mọi nghĩa cử, dù là một hành vi nhỏ bé đến đâu và làm cho mọi người nhỏ
mọn đến đâu, cũng được ghi nhớ muôn đời.
Tiền của có thể qua đi, danh vọng có thể mai một, nhưng những việc làm
bác ái luôn có giá trị vĩnh cửu. Thánh Phaolô đã nói: trong ba nhân đức Tin,
Cậy, Mến, chỉ có Ðức Mến là tồn tại đến muôn đời.
Cuộc đời của mỗi người Kitô chúng ta cũng giống như một bức tranh cần
được hoàn thành. Mỗi một nghĩa cử chúng ta làm cho người khác là một
đường nét chúng ta thêm vào cho bức tranh. Khuôn mặt của chúng ta có thể
khô cằn, hoặc rướm máu vì những cày xéo của những thử thách, khó khăn,
đôi tay của chúng ta có thể khô cứng vì những quảng đại, quên mình. Tuy
nhiên, những đường nét bác ái sẽ làm cho khuôn mặt ấy trở thành bất tử…
