From the Pastor’s Desk The whole world united in celebrations to welcome in 2019. The tiny Pacific island of Tonga was the first while American Samoa was among the last. Around the world different traditions designed to bring luck and good fortune in the year ahead are followed: breaking plates in Denmark; eating lentils in Brazil; dropping watermelons from high up in Vincennes in Indiana; eating one grape each time the clock strikes at midnight in Spain; ringing bells in Japan and South Korea; and, in Scotland, being the first person to step foot in their friends' or family's homes after the clock has struck midnight. (www.bbc.co.uk). New Year’s Eve has been celebrated in Times Square for over 100 years. Rain did not dampen the spirits of the million packed into Times Square to watch the ball drop to welcome 2019. Despite the cultural differences, one thing we all know will not change in 2019 is that God’s word, the Holy Bible has all the answers. God's word is for life. It will never, ever change. We need to believe the gospel with our minds and hearts and entrust our lives to the Jesus Christ. God’s Amazing Words can bring peace across generations; it can restore broken hearts and soften hardened ones. God’s words are healing for our past; peace in our present and hope for tomorrow. Words are powerful. They can make us laugh. They can make us cry. They can start our minds working overtime. They can raise our blood pressure. They can "blow our minds." Scripture tells us that the authority with which Jesus taught amazed and astounded those who listened. But words are weak without actions. Actions are powerful. Actions speak louder than words! Participating in or even seeing actions can powerfully affect people. Scripture tells us that Jesus’ actions amazed and astounded those around him because he let his actions testify to his words! Let your actions speak for you! “Live in such a way that those who know you but don’t know God will come to know God because of you!” – Anonymous. Tell the story of Jesus and his love by word and action. I know none of us can do this alone! I also know that we are not alone! Another thing that will not change in 2019 is the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. Empowered by the Holy Spirit and with the full power of God’s grace working in you; you can teach in word and action with urgency, enthusiasm, determination and passion. You can love in a way that it shows. You can rejoice with others in their success. Comfort others in their grief. You can reach out to the lost. You can live in a way so that anyone who looks at us will see Jesus and that anyone who sees Jesus somehow through you sees nothing but his to love. My prayer for 2019 is that you let God’s words into our heart and through your heart to others. And that through Jesus Christ and the bestowing of his Holy Spirit, you can go out in the confidence that you need no degree or position to show others; “Look what Jesus has done in my heart.” Blessings

Luke 19:10 and Mark 10:45 tell us why Jesus came – to seek and save the lost; to give his life as a ransom for many. But how did he come? What was his modus operandi? Preaching? Healing? Teaching? He certainly did those things. But Jesus himself says ‘the Son of Man came eating and drinking’ (Luke 7:34). Eating and drinking – a lot. New Testament scholar Robert Karris says: ‘In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus is either going to a meal, at a meal, or coming from a meal.’ So much so that his enemies accuse him of being ‘a glutton and a drunkard’ – someone who eats too much and drinks too much. ‘The Son of Man’ is a reference to the representative of God’s people who comes in glory before the Ancient of Days to receive authority over all nations (Daniel 7). What is the Son of Man doing when he comes to earth? The Jews expected him to come with a bang, defeating God’s enemies and vindicating his people. Instead he shares a meal.” “Making a Meal of It” by Tim Chester on Theology Network at theologynetwork.org/theology-of-everything/starting-out/making-a- meal-of-it.htm
