First Parish Church, Congregational On the Village Green Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts Awaken to the Light and Love of God; Be a Joyful Beacon to the World Rev. Dr. Mark Boyea, Minister Dr. Herman Weiss, Director of Music and Organist
First Parish Church, Congregational United Church of Christ Worship Celebration Sacrament of Communion Sunday, July 11, 2021 9:00 am Prelude "Adagio Cantabile" Beethoven (from Sonata in C Minor) Welcome Hymn “Praise to the Living God” (on last pages) Opening Prayer Holy One, we gather together this day to thank You, to hear You speak to us, to embrace Your presence, and to better understand the kind of life You call us to.
A life of hope, joy, strength and wisdom. A life of service to You and Your ways through kindness, forgiveness, generosity and hospitality offered to others. Move us to seek that life. Empower us to act and speak in ways that lead us there. Inspire us to take hold of that life and refuse to let it go. We pray this and all things in the name of the One You send to show us and teach us that life – our brother, teacher and leader, Jesus – the One who gave us the words we say to You now… Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
Solo “Let It Be” Lennon/McCartney Paul Knox, soloist When I find myself in times of trouble Mother Mary comes to me speaking words of wisdom: Let it be. And in my hour of darkness She is standing right in front of me speaking words of wisdom: Let it be. Refrain: Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be. Whisper words of wisdom Let it be. And when the broken-hearted people living in the world agree There will be an answer: Let it be. Refrain For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see there will be an answer, Let it be. Refrain
And when the night is cloudy there is still a light that shines on me; Shine until tomorrow: Let it be. I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me speaking words of wisdom: Let it be. Refrain Prayer Intentions Time of Silent Prayer and Music Meditation "Sarabande" Handel Dr. Herman Weiss, piano Prayer of the Morning Solo “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel?” spiritual, arr. Burleigh Paul Knox, soloist Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel, deliver Daniel, deliver Daniel? Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel, and why not every man?
He delivered Daniel from the lion's den, Jonah from the belly of the whale, and the Hebrew children from the fiery furnace, and why not every man? Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel, deliver Daniel, deliver Daniel? Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel, and why not every man? The wind blows east and the wind blows west – it blows like the judgment day, and every poor soul that never did pray will be glad to pray that day. Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel, deliver Daniel, deliver Daniel? Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel, and why not every man? I set my foot on the Gospel ship, and the ship it begin to sail. It landed over me on Canaan’s shore, and I’ll never come back anymore. Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel, deliver Daniel, deliver Daniel? Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel, and why not every man?
The Hebrew Scriptures Genesis 18:22-33 (Common English Bible Translation) 22 The men turned away and walked toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing in front of the LORD. 23 Abraham approached and said, “Will you really sweep away the innocent with the guilty? 24 What if there are fifty innocent people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not save the place for the sake of the fifty innocent people in it? 25 It’s not like you to do this, killing the innocent with the guilty as if there were no difference. It’s not like you! Will the judge of all the earth not act justly?” 26 The LORD said, “If I find fifty innocent people in the city of Sodom, I will save it because of them.” 27 Abraham responded, “Since I’ve already decided to speak with my Lord, even though I’m just soil and ash, 28 what if there are five fewer innocent people than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city over just five?”The LORD said, “If I find forty-five there, I won’t destroy it.”
29 Once again Abraham spoke, “What if forty are there?”The LORD said, “For the sake of forty, I will do nothing.” 30 He said, “Don’t be angry with me, my Lord, but let me speak. What if thirty are there?” The LORD said, “I won’t do it if I find thirty there.” 31 Abraham said, “Since I’ve already decided to speak with my Lord, what if twenty are there?” The LORD said, “I won’t do it, for the sake of twenty.” 32 Abraham said, “Don’t be angry with me, my Lord, but let me speak just once more. What if there are ten?” And the LORD said, “I will not destroy it because of those ten.” 33 When the LORD finished speaking with Abraham, he left; but Abraham stayed there in that place.
