CONFIRMATION SPONSOR INFORMATION 2021-2022 Each candidate for Confirmation will need a sponsor. Choosing a sponsor may be an easy decision for some and a rather difficult one for others. Here are some guidelines to assist you. Primary Role of a sponsor is: 1. to assist the candidate in preparing for Confirmation. 2. to present the candidate for Confirmation. 3. to help the confirmed person to live out his or her Catholic faith fully. 4. to pray for the candidate during preparation and for throughout your life. Requirements to be a sponsor: 1. A sponsor must be a Catholic in good standing with the church. (i.e. frequently receiving the sacraments, married within the laws of the Church, attending Sunday/Holy Day Mass, etc) 2. A sponsor must be at least 16 years old and already Confirmed. 3. A sponsor may not be the parent of the candidate. 4. A sponsor need not be the same gender as the candidate. 5. Must request Sponsor Approval Form be filled out by home parish and returned to POP How do I choose a sponsor? ● Think carefully about someone you know who meets the criteria above. Who do you know that is a living example of faith, whose actions reflect the actions of Jesus? ● The Church encourages us to consider our godparents as sponsors for confirmation. The strong connection of confirmation to baptism makes a godparent a natural choice if he/she meets the requirements above. ● Pray for the wisdom to know who to ask. If you do not know someone who meets the criteria above then discuss your options with the Confirmation Director. Once you have chosen a sponsor, submit the following info online by March 9th, 2022: Sponsor’s Legal Name (First & Last): _______________________________________________________________ Sponsor’s Relationship to Confirmation Candidate: ________________________________________________ Sponsor’s Phone Number: ____________________________________________ Sponsor’s Mailing Address: ___________________________________________________________________________ Street ___________________________________________________________________________ City State Zip Sponsor’s E-mail Address: ____________________________________________________________________________ (will only be used to communicate details about Confirmation and will be destroyed after Confirmation) Is your sponsor a Prince of Peace parishioner: Yes or No (Sponsor does NOT have to be a POP parishioner)
PATRON SAINT GUIDELINES 2021-2022 “Why do I need a new name for Confirmation?” Well, maybe you don’t…or maybe you’d like to choose a new name for yourself! It is the Catholic Church’s tradition for the sacrament of Confirmation that the candidate (that’s you) choose a new name to ‘confirm’ your baptism and that you indeed have dedicated your life to God. It also serves as a constant reminder that you have changed through the grace of the Holy Spirit received at Confirmation. The tradition of choosing Confirmation names goes back further in history than the sacrament itself. In the Scriptures, a name was not only what a person was called, but also who they were. Your parents chose your name for you. You may want to ask them, if you don’t already know, why they picked that particular name for you. If your name is a saint’s name you may want to find out more about that person and keep that name for your Confirmation. After researching your own name it will have more meaning to you. Also by choosing your baptismal name you are reaffirming who you are and who your parents saw you as when you were born. On the other hand, Confirmation can be your chance to choose a new name for yourself. You are encouraged to choose a saint that you can admire and imitate. Choose someone who is special to you in some way. You may choose a saint that you have something in common with, you share a special day with, or that is the patron of a vocation you want for yourself. Take time in choosing your Confirmation name. Don’t rush, but also don’t procrastinate. Talk with your parents, sponsor and teachers about saints who are good role models. Get online to study up on the saints who are our ‘heavenly helpers’. This project and Confirmation will be much more meaningful if you take your time and do your research. Choose a saint that is truly special to you. Ask (pray) for the Holy Spirit to guide you! Ideas to help you: ● Choose a saint who represents a cause (i.e. environment, education, music, etc.) which is important to you. ● Choose a saint you admire from the Bible or book of saints. ● Choose the name of someone who has influenced your faith. ● Choose to affirm the name you were given at baptism. ● Check out the suggested names list for ideas. CONFIRMATION STEWARDSHIP HOURS 2021-2022 Requirement: As a requirement for Confirmation all 1st and 2nd year Confirmation Candidates must complete 7 hours of service each semester (14 hours total each formation year). 4 service hours during the prior summer can count toward fall hours. Why do we do service? Why do we do it as a family? In preparing for the sacrament of Confirmation you are learning to be a witness of Christ and His teachings. More than anything else you are a witness to Him by your actions. In making service to others a part of your life, you are being a witness to Christ. In doing this as a family, parents can demonstrate a lifestyle of stewardship to their children. This also creates a shared experience with your family members. Examples of Stewardship Opportunities ● Altar Serving ● Helping the Art & Environment Committee decorate the Church ● Volunteering for a non- profit company (Christmas in Oct/Harvesters) ● Working at a food kitchen (St. Mary’s) ● Shoveling snow/raking leaves for a neighbor ● Helping at your school (helping teacher after school, carnival, fundraiser) ● Visiting/volunteering at a nursing home ● Serving elderly/high risk people by baking for them, buying groceries for them, or doing their yard work ● Making face masks for people or donating them ● Writing letters or making cards for sick people in the hospital ● It is also acceptable to dedicate 2 hours a semester of “above and beyond” help at home (not regular chores like vacuuming/emptying dishwasher/mowing the lawn but a larger, more extensive and intentional project) What do I do after I have completed a stewardship project? 1. All stewardship hours will need to be tracked on the form provided for each semester 2. Each semester students will also need to choose one stewardship project to reflect on and submit a written paper covering: a. Written reflection must include a description of the stewardship project (where/when/how long/with whom you served), an explanation of whether or not you would choose to do this project again (yes/no and why), your favorite/least favorite parts of the project, consideration of how this project helped you grow in your faith, any additional information/comments you’d like to include 3. Fall service hours must be completed and written reflection submitted by December 15th, 2021 4. Spring service hours must be completed and written reflection submitted by March 30th, 2022 ** Students are expected to complete all aspects of this requirement, not parents.
