Email: stmark@stmarkcares.org July 2021 Volume 54 Issue 7 100th Anniversary Happenings! Embracing the Future on a Century of Faith For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. Psalm 100:5 On September 28th 1921 St. Paul held a congregational meeting to recommend to the Synod a Call to Rev. Mark A. Getzendaner for a new mission start as they were becoming crowded in their space. Pr. J.A. Miller asked 98 of its own members who he knew were located in west Davenport to transfer to the new mission church. So, we will be marking our 100th year anniversary in September 2021 cumulating with a celebration banquet and worship the weekend of May 14th/15th 2022. Save the dates! The History sub-committee is looking for pictures over the years at St. Mark. We are especially in need of older pictures and recent pictures (the cell phone/digital era has diminished the print). They are also interested in receiving pictures of baptisms and/or baptismal certificates and wedding pictures. It is best to send them to us electronically to stmark100years2022@yahoo.com. If you choose to send in a hard copy, please send in a copy as we cannot guarantee an original will be returned to you. To remember our 100-year Anniversary at St. Mark the committee has had two historic mementos that will be for sale beginning this fall. These can be for your own remembrance or can be purchased as gifts for family and friends who were baptized, confirmed, married, went to preschool or members of St. Mark. The first is a 3-1/4" Porcelain Horizontal Oval Ornament as depicted below. The Second is a 1 3/4" Brass Hard Enamel/ Printed Coin also shown on the left. To see color versions of both the ornament and the coin, go to our website www.stmarkcares.org, and view LIFE online. As we celebrate we will remember the past and those who were so faithful, celebrate our mission and ministries, and leave a gift to those who will continue the ministry

Page 3 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. -1 Corinthians 12:12-27 In conversation, months ago, with Grace Lutheran’s Pastor Stephanie we chatted about some possible ways we might collaborate in ministry. We also discovered that we both have had recent staff changes due to retirements and deaths. While there are other churches, at the time when we began these conversations, many were in the middle of pastoral transitions. It remains possible that what begins with Grace and St. Mark could grow to include more people at the table. We believe the Holy Spirit brought the pastors and congregations of St. Mark and Grace together as we were both ready to explore this idea. Through conversations with Grace and St. Mark leaders we have discovered that each congregation is excited about the possibility of partnering. Together we can support one another, we can share in activities like Bible studies or youth events and yes there is the possibility of sharing staff like that of a faith formation coordinator/youth coordinator, parish nurse or a new position all together. However, before going further we know we need to broaden the conversation to include those from the congregation. As a result, the Councils at both Grace and St. Mark have authorized a formation of a Partnering in Ministry Task Force which will include members from each congregation. The Task Force will be diving deeper into the needs of each congregation and the ways we might be able to grow together. This may result in the task force developing a strategic and coordinated vision about this partnership. BUT we need your help! We will need your prayers and discernment as we begin to seek nominations for the Task Force in July. To learn more about the Partnering in Ministry Task Force find the proposal at Parish visitors would like www.stmarkcares.org. to bring communion to you! If you would like a I want to thank those of you who attended the kick-off June 30th at Grace visit, please notify the Lutheran Church for this journey which we had conversation and prayer on church office, together with Grace members and the Assistant to the Bishop, Pastor Erika 563.322.5318. Uthe. We kick off this endeavor as we enter into 30 days of prayer. Information of the 30 days of prayer are included in a separate article in the edition of St. Mark Life. Journeying with you, Pastor Travis We are gearing up for the National Youth Gathering which will be held July 24th-28th, 2022 in Minneapolis, MN. If your Youth will be 8th-12th grade at the time of registration (Fall of 2021), they are eligi- ble to attend the Gathering next summer. Please make sure to check your e-mails regarding information for this amazing event. More in- formation will also be in the next issue of LIFE. If you have any questions, please speak to Amber or Pastor Travis. Please check your e-mail regarding our annual Youth Group meeting which will take place in August. We need input from families to find out what date works best so no one misses out on this important information. This meeting is where we plan our events for the upcoming program year, including fundraisers for the Na- tional Youth Gathering, community service projects, lock-ins, and other fun activities.
Page 7 These are the highlights of the May 20, 2021 Council meeting: Council discussed at length covid precautions. Hymnals, Bibles and Pencil will return to the pews by July. Communion will continue in the pew. Masks are strongly encouraged to help protect children (who are not yet able to receive a vaccination) and those who have underlying medical issues. Vaccinated people can still get covid. Council discussed the proposal and 30 days of prayer as we continue the possibilities of partnering with Grace Lutheran, Davenport. Council approved a bid for a new phone system to replace the phone system that is decades old. Council approved Amber Sherrod to be the Primary Youth Gathering Leader for the ELCA Youth Gathering for conference churches. This is being supported by our St. Mark Endowment We will have Christmas in July on Saturday July 24th and Sunday July 25th The council recommends that at the next congregational meeting to vote on allowing the Council to sell burial plots that were given to the church. The Blessing Effect: A Single Act of Kindness Can Rewrite the Future by Robert K. Pozil. This book is a perfect read for Adults and Teens. “After working many years in youth ministry and now as a Christian music songwriter, I have seen firsthand how words and stories can impact lives. This book provides an antidote to bullying, violence, and pain. The Blessing Effect shows us that there are no limits when love is put into action.” — Ethan Hulse This month we'll be trying something new at St Mark Lutheran: Christmas in July. On Notes from the the weekend of July 24th/25th we'll liturgically observe Christmas, with all its Organ Bench appropriate readings and music. This will give us an opportunity to celebrate it together in person, after having missed the chance last December. (I'm glad we were able to make worship videos, but they really are no substitute for in-person worship.) What does this mean for you? Well, several things. The first is that it's an excellent opportunity to invite people to worship with us that weekend: I imagine there are lots of folks out there who missed out on the chance to attend church last Christmas. The second is that we're also using the occasion as an excuse to support Underwear Because We Care, which you'll no doubt hear more about later this month. The third relevant piece of information -- and certainly the most relevant for me -- is that this is a chance for special music. We won't be reconvening regular choir or bell choir rehearsals until September, so this means I'm in search of volunteers who might be interested in performing Christmas music. Whether you're an instrumentalist or a singer, I'm eager to hear your talents! And we're observing Christmas on both July 24th and 25th, so there are two opportunities. Do get in touch with me if you feel inspired to share Christmas music with St Mark.
