Good Day everyone, My name is Caroline Chan and I am the Pro Vice- Chancellor of the University of Newcastle based in Singapore and the CEO of the Newcastle Australia Institute of Higher Education, a local wholly owned entity of the University. It has been over a year since we have had tighter restrictions due to COVID-19. In Singapore, we have a fantastic track record in response to this pandemic and I am confident that we will get through this period together again. While I am unable to meet many of you in person, I am delighted to be able to connect through this newsletter and provide the updates of some of the University’s recent achievements and activities. The University of Newcastle (UON) Australia has delivered superior education and world-class research since 1965. The University is ranked in the world's top one per cent of universities and within the top 10 universities in Australia. The University lead the world in teaching and research through four of its locations – In Australia - Newcastle, Central Coast, and Sydney, and in Asia - Singapore. Newcastle Australia Institute of Higher Education Pte Ltd (Newcastle Australia IHE) is a wholly owned entity of the University of Newcastle Australia. Established in 2006 as UON Singapore, Newcastle Australia IHE is the international footprint of the University in the Asia region to support the delivery of the University’s programs in Singapore. In partnership with highly respected local institutes and government, we have graduated over 5,000 graduates from 39 countries. This year, the University has been awarded and recognised as #1 in the world on partnership to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal, SDG # 17. We are very proud of this achievement as it demonstrates our commitment to partnerships in achieving the Sustainable World, arguably the most important issue humankind is facing at the moment. Recognising the increasingly significant role of the Singapore campus in the Asia Pacific region – we will transition the Singapore office and register as a private education institute (PEI) to offer the University’s programs in Singapore. This means we will expand our presence and activities in Singapore. As part of this process, we have now changed the name of the company in Singapore – from UON Singapore to ‘Newcastle Australia Institute of Higher Education’ effective 17 May 2021.
We will be relocating our office and moving from the current Suntec Tower 4 location to the iconic National Library Board (NLB) building on 1 October 2021. Being co-located within the National Library enables us to be part of the development of literary and community education in Singapore. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to be part of this exciting times and I am hoping you are all, as excited as myself in this journey and the new chapter of the University in Singapore. We will certainly keep you up to date about the progress so keep watching the space. Finally, not least, I would like to thank everyone who have made contributions to the various aspects of the university’s life – the University’s Council and the Singapore’s Board members, the University’s Senior management, the staff members, students, alumni and friends of the University. Without your supports, we will not be going this far, especially in this challenging time the world is facing.
