Experts call them natural supports or people in your life who can offer collaboration, dignity and respect, and care. Together, they form your Circle of Support. One way to expand your youth’s circle of support is through mentoring. January is National Mentoring Month, and the National Mentoring Partnership has resources with information about mentoring, which as many benefits for youth in general and specifically for youth with mental health concerns. You can even search for a mentor in your local community. Statewide Family Network Update Bullying in Nevada Stopbullying.gov defines bullying as unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. In addition to state anti-bullying laws, a Nevada school that fails to respond to bullying based on a protected class like race, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability may be violating federal civil rights laws. Most of the public school districts in Nevada have information about bullying available online – from Lyon to Clark and from Elko to Washoe. Since families often have challenges navigating all of the bullying processes, policies, and laws, the Statewide Family Network helps families advocate through one-on-one support and recommend that parents view Bullies, Targets, and Bystanders: Responses that Work to learn more. PEP E-Post Newsletter We welcome your feedback to help guide the future of mental health research efforts and priorities at NIMH. Every five years, NIMH publishes a Strategic Plan for Research to accelerate progress in basic, translational, and clinical science. We have made huge strides in understanding and treating mental illnesses through basic and clinical research since the last Strategic Plan was published in 2015, and now we’re looking ahead to the next five years. The 2020 Strategic Plan includes four goals that form a broad roadmap for the Institute’s priorities over the next five years, beginning with the fundamental science of the brain and behavior and continuing through to the public health impact of the research we support. Aimed at helping individuals living with mental illnesses and promoting both prevention and cure, NIMH’s high-level goals are as follows: • Define the Brain Mechanisms Underlying Complex Behaviors • Examine Mental Illness Trajectories Across the Lifespan • Strive for Prevention and Cures • Strengthen the Public Health Impact of NIMH-Supported Research Read the Draft Plan . . . 2019 IACC Call for Nominations The Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC), which was reauthorized by the Autism Collaboration, Accountability, Research, Education and Support (CARES) Act of 2019, is seeking nominations of individuals to serve as non-federal public members on this committee. PEP E-Post Newsletter Clinical trials are research studies that look at new ways to prevent, detect, or treat diseases and conditions . The goal of clinical trials is to determine if a new test or treatment works and is safe.
