Sanford Elks Lodge #1679 The 1679’er News May 2021 Exalted Ruler: Addison Johnson 910 Carthage Street • Sanford, North Carolina 27330 • www.sanfordelks1679.org Phone (919) 776-3660 • Email er@sanfordelks1679.org April, 2019 Dear Elks Families: The new year has started off in full speed. In just the first month of the 2021-2022 we have been able to install our new slate of officers and bring in 16 new members just two weeks later. I would like to give a special thanks to the new member’s sponsors. Membership is our lodge’s lifeline and we must remain diligent in showing our friends and family the great things that our lodge has to offer. May will also be a very busy month here at the Sanford Elks Lodge. The first weekend of the month, some of our board members will be representing our Lodge at the North Carolina Elks Spring Convention in Wilmington. It should be a great time of fellowship and education for our officers. May 15th, will be our annual pool cleanup day. We will start at 9:00 am and will work until the job is done. Please come out whether you have 30 minutes or three hours to commit. The more help we have the quicker we'll get it done. If all goes as planned, the pool with open on Friday, May 28 (Memorial Day Weekend). In 2021-2022 my main initiative is to be visible in the community. Increased visibility will not only allow us to highlight all of the great things the Sanford Elks Lodge does within our community, but it will allow us to attract new members that want to help us in our mission. My goal is to have an Elks presence at as many community events through the summer and fall as possible. I believe that just being there, shaking hands, and talking to people about all the Elks has to offer will allow See ER Message on page 2 Lodge Officers Committees Exalted Ruler……………...Addison Johnson PER President……….……..Nathan Cochrane Leading Knight……………………..Alex Voytik Elks National Foundation…..…Steve Johnson Loyal Knight……………….....Chanda Coomer Americanism………………....Chanda Coomer Lecturing Knight……………….……..Chris Gill National Veterans Service….….…Lee Littiken Secretary……….....Steve Johnson, PDDGER Auditing/Accounting…….……….Mike Gonella Treasurer………………Joe Clancy, PDDGER Drug Awareness…………....Randall Mattingly Chaplain…………..………....Randall Mattingly Public Relations……………Gordon Anderson Esquire………………………...…...Reed Smith Risk Management……….………..Brent Smith Tiler……………………….……..Stacy Nooning Youth Activities………………….……Chris Gill Inner Guard…………………………Amy Dew Membership……………….………..Scott Pace 1-Year Trustee…………..…Scott Pace, PSP 2-Year Trustee….......Nathan Cochrane, PER Club Manager…………….……….Tim Sinnott 3-Year Trustee……………..Chris Setzer, PER Pool Manager…………….……....Carolyn Lee Memorial Day is on May 31st, the last Monday of May. This date was set aside in the early 1860’s for the practice of decorating servicemen’s graves with flowers. Memorial Day, as we know it today, was officially declared a Federal Law in 1967. In the traditional observance, our flag is flown at half-staff until noon sym- bolizing a nation in mourning. The flag is then raised to full staff, by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain but, rise up in their stead and continue our fight for liberty and justice for all. Justice is a cardinal virtue of all Elks.
Page 2 Sanford Elks Lodge #1679 Newsletter ● May 2021 Tip of the Antlers! To the out going officers for serving the Lodge and it's members during a very different year. To the in coming officers for your dedication to the Lodge and giving up of your time during the next year to keep this Lodge the best the State. Chris Black for his generous contribution to put an Elks Banner up during the Sanford Spinners ballgames. Sanford Mayor and lodge member Chet Mann for provided a Youth Week Proclamation. This is what makes our Lodge successful!!! It takes lots and lots of volunteers. Thanks again to everyone that takes time out of their busy schedule to help our Lodge continue to demonstrate “Elks Care-Elks Share”. ER Message continued... us to build our presence in the community and make others want to be a part of our Great Lodge. To make this possible we will need as many Elks as possible to volunteer to help. Please stay tuned for which events we’ll be attending and let’s us know when you can help out. I look forward to working with each and every member as we make our presence know in our community. Fraternally, Addison Johnson, Exalted Ruler www.sanfordelks1679.org Email: er@sanfordelks1679.org LOCAL TEEN FUNDRAISER Come to the Elks and you will find two loaded wagons. The Party Fun Red Wagon will be loaded with adult beverages and party fun and chances are available in the bar. The Family Fun Blue Wagon will be loaded with more "G rated" things and available at the pool. Members and guests are asked to buy chances on ei- ther one or both for the July 4th drawing. In years past the Sanford Lodge has sponsored the Cleats for Kids Program providing football cleats or track shoes for both high school students who need help buying what they need to play. We also sponsor the Toys for Teens program that picks up where the Salvation Army and Toys for Tots programs leave off at Christmas. Believing that a teenager is a kid too, we provide presents for kids from 13 through 18. Both of these have been heavily funded by the Elks National Foundation, This year that will still be the case but due to some grant restraints, we have teamed up with Pepsi thanks to lodge member and Past Ex- alted Ruler Vince Wenger to put together this fundraiser to merge the two programs into one and make it bigger and better than ever. Now we need your help. This is a signature project of the Sanford Elks, and there are none others like it. Please consider being part of the solution and help support our goal of $ 3,000.00 For more information contact co-chairmen Chanda Coomer (chanda@sanfordelks1679.org) or Mike McGraw (mike.mcgraw@sanfordelks1679.org).
