W RITERS CORNER: Doves “Once upon a time, for seven years I lived on the Grand River almost off the grid, long before it became trendy. My neighbors were raccoons, eagles and owls. I loved the starry nights, moon over the water and the myriad sights and sounds that nature provided. Then, circumstances changed, and I found myself back in my 4th floor condo apartment in the midst of busy Burlington. There I overlook the escarpment . . . and hectic Plains Road. Still, I enjoy being able to walk to something more than the mailbox, and have a wonderful balcony garden. This year, it was chilly in May and I delayed my planting. One day I moved a pot to catch some late day sun, and noticed what looked like a flat, large, grey stone in the middle of a planter hanging from the rail. I thought “how the h*** did that get there? Are rocks falling from the sky?” Just then, the stone started flapping and flew into me before leaving with a screeching sound; I was equally startled. I looked in the planter and there was a small nest with two eggs! I was mesmerized that a balcony frequented by cats, had become a nesting site for Doves. In a few days I saw they hatched and when being fed I could see their marble-size heads atop a scrawny alien-like body. Most of the time they were hidden safely under the parent. It was like watching time lapse photography, as the babies quickly grew and were soon fully feathered, and larger than a sparrow. Within a few weeks, they were madly flapping their wings preparing to leave the nest, the parents attending less each day, and eventually the little ones flew off into the blue, leaving me only pho- tographs and memories. I believe it was a gift from beyond, an up-close real- life miracle that will forev- er live in my heart.” -Debra Links to Halton Libraries: Burlington- www.bpl.on.ca Georgetown/Acton-www.hhpl.on.ca Oakville- www.opl.on.ca Milton- www.mpl.on.ca Many Libraries are doing curbside pickup now
