Gospel Reading Mark 12:28b-34 Jesus is questioned by a scribe about the greatest commandment. Background on the Gospel Reading As we continue to read from Mark’s Gospel, our Lectionary skips a chapter that helps set the context for today’s reading. If we were to read the sections skipped (chapter 11 and part of chapter 12), we would hear about Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, his cleansing of The Cathedral of Rome the Temple, and the questioning of Jesus’ authority by the chief priests, scribes, and elders. The context, therefore, for this Gospel is Jesus’ growing exposure before the Jewish authorities. In this month of November, let us not forget the Church Suffering, the poor souls in Purgatory. These are the souls who died in a state of sanctifying grace, but are in need of purification before entering into heaven. They are called poor souls because they can no longer merit the grace of purification for themselves and so are com- pletely dependent on our prayers and sacrifices for them. They are needy, and they need us! Let us pray for Saturday, November 17 them and offer masses for the repose of their souls. This is the Communion of Saints: the Church Militant, the Church Triumphant and the Church Suffering--and we are family, the family of God.
