Church of the Holy Cross The Liturgy of the Resurrection September 26, 2021 12:30 pm A Service in Celebration of the Life of Marijo Kelly October 13, 1954 – October 12, 2020
A NOTE about COVID-19 safety: Welcome to Holy Cross Episcopal Church! In order to ensure everyone’s safety as we celebrate Marijo’s life today, we ask that all worshippers • Sign the guest book (for contract tracing purposes). • Wear a mask over nose and mouth at all times (except when eating/drinking or speaking at the lectern). • Maintain 6 feet social distancing by household as much as possible. Thank you for your cooperation! The Gathering of the People The Presider will offer a verbal welcome. All then please stand, as you are able, while the following anthem is said. Presider I am Resurrection and I am Life, says the Lord. Whoever has faith in me shall have life, even though he die. And everyone who has life, and has committed himself to me in faith, shall not die for ever. As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives and that at the last he will stand upon the earth. After my awaking, he will raise me up; and in my body I shall see God. I myself shall see, and my eyes behold him who is my friend and not a stranger. Presider God be with you. People And also with you. Presider Let us pray. O God, who by the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ destroyed death, and brought life and immortality to light: Grant that your servant Marijo Kelly, being raised with him, may know the strength of his presence, and rejoice in his eternal glory; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Most merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our understanding, deal graciously with Marijo’s loved ones in their grief. Surround them with your love, that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in your goodness, and strength to meet the days to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The people sit. 2
The Liturgy of the Word A reading from the Hebrew Scriptures Job 19:21-27a Reader A reading from Job. Job answered, “Have pity on me, have pity on me, O you my friends, for the hand of God has touched me! Why do you, like God, pursue me, never satisfied with my flesh? O that my words were written down! O that they were inscribed in a book! O that with an iron pen and with lead they were engraved on a rock forever! For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth; and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another.” Reader Hear what the spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God Psalm 139:1-11 The reader leads. The congregation recites the verses in bold. 1 LORD, you have searched me out and known me; * you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 2 You trace my journeys and my resting-places * and are acquainted with all my ways. 3 Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, * but you, O LORD, know it altogether. 4 You press upon me behind and before * and lay your hand upon me. 5 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; * it is so high that I cannot attain to it. 6 Where can I go then from your Spirit? * where can I flee from your presence? 7 If I climb up to heaven, you are there; * if I make the grave my bed, you are there also. 8 If I take the wings of the morning * and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea 9 Even there your hand will lead me * and your right hand hold me fast. 10 If I say, “Surely the darkness will cover me, * and the light around me turn to night,” 11 Darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day; * darkness and light to you are both alike. 3
A Reading from the Letters Romans 8:35, 37-39 Reader A reading from Romans. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Reader Hear what the spirit is saying to God’s people People Thanks be to God The Holy Gospel Matthew 11:25-30 Please stand as you are able. Presider The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you Lord Christ. At that time Jesus said, ‘I thank* you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.* All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. ‘Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’ Presider The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you Lord Christ Sermon The Rev Ian Reed Twiss Remembrance Jim Kelly The Apostle’s Creed Please stand as you are able. Deacon In the assurance of eternal life given at Baptism, let us proclaim the faith of the church and say, Ministers and People I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. 4
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Prayers of the People Deacon Let us pray: For our sister Marijo let us pray to our Lord Jesus Christ who said, "I am Resurrection and I am Life." Lord, you consoled Martha and Mary in their distress; draw near to us who mourn for Marijo, and dry the tears of those who weep. Hear us, Lord. You wept at the grave of Lazarus, your friend; comfort us in our sorrow. Hear us, Lord. You raised the dead to life; give to our sister eternal life. Hear us, Lord. You promised paradise to the thief who repented; bring our sister to the joys of heaven. Hear us, Lord. Our sister was washed in Baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit; give her fellowship with all your saints. Hear us, Lord. Comfort us in our sorrows at the death of our sister; let our faith be our consolation, and eternal life our hope. Silence may be kept. The Presider concludes with the following Father of all, we pray to you for our sister Marijo, and for all those whom we love but see no longer. Grant to them eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them. May her soul and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. 5
The Peace Presider The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. The gathered offer a wish of peace to one another before Communion. Announcements The Holy Communion Offertory Music Old Irish Blessing Agay Eucharistic Prayer Please stand as you are able. Presider God be with you. People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord; who rose victorious from the dead, and comforts us with the blessed hope of everlasting life. For to your faithful people, O Lord, life is changed, not ended; and when our mortal body lies in death, there is prepared for us a dwelling place eternal in the heavens. Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we say: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of Power and Might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the One who comes In the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. 6
Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life. On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said; “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with Marijo Kelly and all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN. As Jesus Christ has taught us, we now pray, Presider and People Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. 7
The Breaking of the Bread The Presider breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. Then may be said: Presider We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ. People We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread. Presider The Gifts of God for the People of God. Holy Gifts for Holy People. The Communion of the People In the Episcopal Church all baptized people may receive Holy Communion regardless of age. However, this is the Lord’s Table and no one who comes to the altar seeking Christ will be turned away. In this COVID era, only consecrated bread is offered, but rest assured that it still “counts” as full communion. Gluten free wafers are available upon request. You are all invited to share this last meal with Marijo. Communion Hymn H 335 I am the Bread of Life 8
Post Communion Prayer of Thanksgiving People and Presider Almighty God, we thank you that in your great love you have fed us with the spiritual food and drink of the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ and have given us a foretaste of your heavenly banquet. Grant that this Sacrament may be to us a comfort in affliction and a pledge of our inheritance in that kingdom where there is no death, neither sorrow nor crying, but the fullness of joy with all your saints; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. The Commendation The Presider and other ministers take their places at the cremains. Presider Give rest, O Christ, to your servant with your saints, People where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting Presider You only are immortal, the creator and maker of humankind; and we are mortal, formed of the earth, and to earth shall we return. For so did you ordain when you created us, saying, "You are dust, and to dust you shall return." All of us go down to the dust; yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. People Give rest, O Christ, to your servant with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting. The Presider, facing the cremains, says Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servant, Marijo. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive her into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen. 9
Blessing and Dismissal Presider Let us go forth in the name of Christ. Alleluia! Alleluia! People Thanks be to God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Recessional Hymn H 671 Amazing Grace After the service, please join Marijo’s family for some light food in the Parish Hall. A Note on the Service The liturgy for the dead is an Easter liturgy. It finds all its meaning in the resurrection. Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we, too, shall be raised. The liturgy, therefore, is characterized by joy, in the certainty that “neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This joy, however, does not make human grief unchristian. The very love we have for each other in Christ brings deep sorrow when we are parted by death. Jesus himself wept at the grave of his friend. So, while we rejoice that one, we love has entered into the nearer presence of our Lord, we sorrow in sympathy with those who mourn. Ministers of this Service Presider: The Rev.
