January 5, 2020 The Epiphany of the Lord Our Lady of the Woods Parish 10731 West 131st Street Orland Park, IL 60462 (708) 361– 4754 Fax (708) 361-5965 parishoffice@ourladyofthewoods.org web site—www.ourladyofthewoods.org Religious Education Office (708)361-9435 religioused@ourladyofthewoods.org Mission Statement Under the protection of the Mother of God, we are a faith community called by the Father, energized by the Son, and moved by the Spirit to unite in witnessing and proclaiming the Good News. We share in friendship, gather in worship, and do pro- claim our desire to minister, welcome, celebrate and extend His Kingdom.
Page Two Dear Parishioners, The Feast of Epiphany is celebrated this weekend and it is always valuable what we can learn from the Wise Men. Like all characters found in scripture, they have much to teach us. The story of the Magi is, most likely, meant by Matthew to instruct us on how we are to be Christian. The Magi represent several aspects of the Christian faith journey. First, they remind us of the need to look for Jesus. That is a search that is never ending. It is interesting that the early church celebrated the mystagogia for new members. This was a process in which converts, after being baptized, communed and confirmed, continued to walk in a spirit of discovery. The point being, there is no person who cannot be led to a deeper understanding of the Lord. The story of the wise men is a story of those who kept searching. They traveled far to discover the Lord. On our personal faith journey, what costs are we willing to pay to discover the Lord in our own lives? Secondly, they show us that we need to look for God in the most unlikely of places. It had to strain their faith to recognize that their search for the newborn king would end in a small town in Bethlehem but they certainly were open to whatever they were shown. How many of us limit our chance to encounter Christ in places we would not search? Perhaps we run from recognizing him in the crosses we carry. Perhaps we turn from seeing him in the face of the poor and needy. In any event, Epiphany reminds us that God is revealed where we least expect it. Finally, they remind us of the need to give of ourselves. The magi brought gifts to the newborn king. We too must bring what we have to share, even if that is the humblest of talents. May each of us learn from this story and become the wise men and women that the world needs. In Christ, Father Mike REV. MICHAEL G. FOLEY, PASTOR REV. ANDREW M. WAWRZYN, ASSOCIATE PASTOR MOST REV.
