Pastors Message
We had an incredibly challenging 2020. As we begin our journey through 2021, Pope
Francis Calls for ‘Culture of Care’ in his 2021 World Peace Day message. The World Day
of Peace — instituted by St. Paul VI in 1968 — is celebrated each year on Jan. 1. On this
special occasion The pope provides a message, which is sent to world leaders around
the world. The pope’s message for the 2021 World Day of Peace is entitled, “A Culture
of Care as a Path to Peace.”
Here are few excerpts: “The culture of care calls for a common, supportive and inclusive
commitment to protecting and promoting the dignity and good of all, a willingness to
show care and compassion, to work for reconciliation and healing, and to advance mutual
respect and acceptance. As such, it represents a privileged path to peace,” Pope Francis
wrote in the peace message published Dec. 17.
Pope Francis wrote that he envisioned this culture of care as a way to combat the
“culture of indifference, waste, and confrontation so prevalent in our time.” “May we nev‐
er yield to the temptation to disregard others, especially those in greatest need, and to
look the other way; instead, may we strive daily, in concrete and practical ways, to form a
community composed of brothers and sisters who accept and care for one another.”
The Holy Father pointed to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy and charity prac-
ticed by the early Church as an example. “The first generation of Christians shared what
they had, so that no one among them would be in need. They strove to make their com‐
munity a welcoming home, concerned for every human need and ready to care for those
most in need. It became customary to make voluntary offerings in order to feed the poor,
bury the dead and care for orphans, the elderly and victims of disasters like shipwrecks,”
he said.
Let the invitation of the Holy Father, inspire us as we celebrate the Epiphany of the
Lord and as we begin our journey through this new year 2021.

Tuvimos un 2020 increíblemente desafiante. Al iniciar nuestro recorrido a través de 2021, El Papa Francisco pide ‘Cultura del Cuidado’ en su mensaje del Día Mundial por la Paz 2021. El Día Mundial por la Paz — instituido por San Pablo VI en 1968 — es celebra- do cada año el 1° de enero. En esta ocasión especial, el Papa da un mensaje, el cual es enviado los líderes de todo el mundo. El mensaje del Papa para el Día Mundial por la Paz 2021 se titula, “Una cultura de Cuidado es el Camino a la Paz.” Aquí hay algunos extractos “La Cultura del Cuidado requiere un compromiso común de apoyo e inclusión para proteger y promover la dignidad y el bien de todos, una voluntad para mostrar cuidado y compasión, trabajar para la reconciliación y sanación, y promover el respeto mutuo y la aceptación. Como tal, representa un camino privilegiado hacia la paz,” el Papa Francisco en el mensaje de paz publicado el 17 de diciembre. El Papa Francisco escribió que él concibió esta cultura del cuidado como una forma de combatir la "cultura de la indiferencia, desperdicio y confrontación muy frecuente en nuestro tiempo." “Que nunca cedamos a la tentación de ignorar a los demás, especialmen‐ te a los más necesitados, y mirar para otro lado; en cambio, que nos esforcemos diaria‐ mente de maneras concretas y prácticas para formar una comunidad compuesta de her‐ manos y hermanas que se aceptan y se quieren los unos por los otros.” El Santo Padre señaló las obras espirituales y corporales de misericordia y caridad prac- ticadas por la Iglesia primitiva como ejemplo. “La Primera generación de cristianos com‐ partieron lo que tenían, para que ninguno entre ellos estuviera necesitado. Ellos se esforza‐ ron por hacer de su comunidad un hogar acogedor, preocupados por cada necesidad hu‐ mana y dispuestos a cuidar a los más necesitados. Se convirtió en costumbre hacer ofren‐ das voluntarias con el fin de alimentar a los pobres, enterrar a los muertos y cuidar de los huérfanos, los ancianos y las víctimas de desastres como naufragios,” él dijo. Iglesia y con el ropaje de la cultura a la que se
pertenece y en la cual se ha asumido el Evan-
gelio.

Probably we have often asked the question - Who Were the Magi? If we
looked at references to the term "Magi" or "wise men" in the Bible or
looked it up in other ancient literature. We would discover that the Magi
were, basically, the "scientists" of the ancient world.
Quasi-scientists, from our perspective, since they did not have the benefit of the modern
scientific, experimental graduation method. But even so, they did make a rational, logical
study of philosophy, medicine, and the natural world - including the stars. They were like the
scholars and professors of ancient times. But instead of working in universities, they usually
worked for kings and at times they would be the King’s Ambassadors. A king would finance
his own group of scholars, using them as consultants and translators, and, also to enhance
his kingdom's reputation.
One group of these scholars revered throughout the ancient world was the Chaldean Magi,
based in the city of Babylon, just south of Bagdad, in modern Iraq. This school was already
well-established 600 years before Christ, when the prophet Daniel was exiled from Jerusa-
lem. The King of Babylon at the time forced Daniel and a few companions, some of Israel's
most promising scholars, to join his school of Magi. There they studied, learned, did amaz-
ing deeds, and even kept their faith in the one, true God, as the Book of Daniel describes.
The prophet Daniel never returned to Jerusalem. He lived his whole, long life as a top-
scholar and royal adviser among Babylon's Magi, where he not only learned from others,
but also shared Jewish history, prophecy, and beliefs.
It is not unreasonable, therefore, to think that his prophesies were known, studied, and
passed down through the generations by the Magi there. And if that is the case, it would
make a lot of historical sense for St. Matthew to tell us that the wise men "from the east"
had seen signs of the Savior's birth and come to worship "the newborn King of the Jews."
The Three Magi needed a little help understanding the prophecy to move forward. God has
also blessed us with his Church to help us understand his will. Sometimes we need a little
guidance to see that it may not be that God is not answering, but that we do not like what
he is trying to say. Through His Word and His Church Christ can be our guiding star.

Probablemente nos hemos hecho la pregunta - ¿Quiénes fueron los Reyes
Magos? Si vemos la referencia al término "Mago" u "hombres sabios" en la
Biblia o en la antigua literatura. Descubriríamos que Magos, básicamente,
eran los “científicos” del mundo antiguo.
Cuasi-científicos, desde nuestra perspectiva, puesto que ellos no tuvieron los beneficios de
la ciencia moderna, método de graduación experimental. Pero aun así hicieron un estudio
lógico racional de la filosofía, medicina y de la naturaleza del mundo - incluyendo las estre-
llas. Ellos fueron como los eruditos y profesores de la Antigüedad. Pero en lugar de trabajar
en Universidades, ellos trabajaban para los reyes y a veces eran los embajadores de los re-
yes. Un rey financiaría a su propio grupo de eruditos, usándolos como consultores y traduc-
tores, y también para mejorar la reputación del reino.
Un grupo de estos eruditos fue venerado a lo largo del mundo antiguo eran los Magos de
Caldea, basados en la ciudad de Babilonia, justo al sur de Bagdad en el moderno Iraq. Esta
escuela ya estaba bien establecida 600 años antes de Cristo, cuando el Profeta Daniel fue

Jerusalén. Vivió su larga vida larga vida como un erudito superior y asesor real entre los Ma-
gos de Babilonia, donde no solo aprendió de otros, sino que también compartió la historia
judía, profecías y creencias.
No es irrazonable, por lo tanto, pensar que sus profecías eran conocidas, estudiadas y tras-
mitidas a otros por generaciones por los Magos de allí. Y si ese fue el caso, tendría mucho
sentido para San Mateo decirnos que los hombres sabios "del este" habían visto señales
del nacimiento del Salvador y venir a adorar "al Rey de los Judíos recién nacido." Los Tres
Magos necesitaron un poco de ayuda comprendiendo la profecía para seguir adelante. Dios
también nos bendijo con Su Iglesia para ayudarnos a entender Su voluntad. Algunas veces
necesitamos un poco de orientación para ver que puede no ser que Dios no está respon-
diendo a lo que le pedimos, pero que a nosotros no nos gusta los nos está tratando de de-
cir. A través de Su Palabra y de Su Iglesia, Cristo puede ser la estrella que nos guía.

FEAST OF FAITH
The Liturgy of Emmanuel
The assembly has gathered from near and far, on foot,
by bus, by car, by subway, singly and by twos and threes:
single people, couples, families. Now that movement is
ritualized and made visible in the liturgy’s entrance pro-
cession.
We are not alone on this journey; Christ is with us. The
procession is led by the cross, with the image of Christ up-
on it. Candles, signs of a living presence, are carried
around the cross. Candles also accompany the Book of the
Gospels, another sign of Emmanuel, God-with-us. The
priest presider is likewise a sign of Christ’s presence in
our assembly; he will act in persona Christi, in the person
of Christ, who presides at every Eucharist.
As the procession begins, we stand and sing together in
our first act as a community. The joining of our voices be-
gins to turn many into one. The songs we sing range from
ancient chants to contemporary hymns, but they have the
same purpose, to foster our unity and turn our thoughts to
the mysteries we gather to celebrate. We may feel that we
can’t sing well, but “Christ always invites us to enter into
song, to rise above our own preoccupations, and to give
our entire selves to the hymn of his Paschal Sacri-
fice” (USCCB, Sing to the Lord, 14).
