Pastor Column Keeping St. Matthew a Beautiful Place The last two years have been a very busy and productive time in the effort to keep the facilities at St. Matthew a beautiful and a safe place for worship. In review, in 2017 we were able to replace all of the exterior lighting with updated LED fix- tures. We had many fixtures, that due to time, burned out and were not working. Not only did we replace the fixtures, but replaced four poles. One had fallen down in a wind storm, (fortunately no one was hurt and three were badly rusted that it truly was a miracle that the wind did not cause them to fall). The timers were also replaced with Solar Timers and once they were set, they will automatically correct to the time changes and for sunrise-sunset times. Cost= $50,000.00 The emergency lighting system was inspected and repaired. Original bids were to replace with a digital system at a cost of $40,000.00. We opted to inspect and repair for $6,000.00 In 2018, we recognized that due to the aging of our facilities and size, we needed to form a Maintenance Ministry. As any property owner knows, maintenance rather than “crisis” repair is the answer. Six Parishioners (including Fr. Hieu) agreed to partake in this ministry. Each one was assigned an area to review and they meet quarterly and discuss their findings. During the year of 2018, we had many issues. The parking lot, due to neglect was posing a safety hazard and was at a stage of massive repair. Cost $122,000.00. But before we could accomplish this, we had 13 Pine trees that were causing root damage to the parking lot that had to be removed first. Cost $14,000.00. Kitchen upgrades. The appliances were replaced with commercial grade appliances. New shelving and work stations were installed. Cabinet door hinges had to be replaced. Also, a very deep cleaning was performed. Cost = $7,300.00. Since December 1, 2018, we have had a few crisis problems. Landscape: Four trees in the parking lot have died due to disease plus one was planted too close to the Church building, causing damage. Estimate as of the day of this writing to remove and replace $2,060.00. There are sixty-seven trees in the parking lot that are all diseased and need to be trimmed. Estimate $4,310.00. Office Building: Two electrical problems and we were citied by the Fire Department. One GFI Breaker not working. Cost to repair $150.00. A floor receptacle has to be moved four feet to meet code. Estimated cost $700.00. The heater does not work. We are waiting for estimates. Hopefully it can be repaired and not replaced. Class Rooms: All the interior door handles needed to be replaced due to not working. Cost $1,096.00 Parish Center: After the last rain storm, we have found three areas of leaks in the roof. We are waiting for estimates. The entrance door was not working properly. Cost $100.00 Church Building: During the last rain storm, leaks in the roof, over the restrooms, were detected. Cost to repair $1,534.00. Termite damage to the ceiling and four exterior trim boards were discovered. Blessedly, no structural damage. Estimate to repair $1,085.00. We have located nine areas in the sidewalks that pose a serious tripping hazard. It appears that tree roots have caused the concrete to buckle. Some can be ground flat and some need to be replaced. Working on quotes now. All of the steel railings around the property show a lot of rusting. Need to sandblast and repaint. Will be looking for quotes in the spring. All of the wood trim on Church, Parish Center and Courtyard needs to be painted. Will look for quotes in the spring. Rectory: No damaged or crises maintenance noted. But we are forecasting $10,000.00 over the course of the year. So why this report today? The Maintenance Ministry regards all of these with great concern. They consult with at least three contractors for appointments and quotes. This report does not include the many hours of repairs they do individually at no cost to the Parish. What we are asking for is if any Parishioner is associated with any firm that does roofing, electrical, plumbing, concrete or asphalt please call the office to make it known to us. We need consultants and advisors. So, how has this been made possible? Due to the generosity of the St. Matthew Family, in weekly contributions, DDF pledges and individual gifts, the funds have been made available to accomplish all of the above. The Diocese of San Ber- nardino does not fund these projects. It all hinges on your support. Thanks to the family of St. Matthew who keeps our Parish a beautiful and safe place to worship, study and be a family. Costo estimado $ 700.00 El calentador no funciona. 6 | St. Matthew Catholic Church “A Christian Community in the Roman Catholic Tradition”
