Cathedral Ministry Conference and the CONFERENCE OF ROMAN CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL MUSICIANS January 14-17, 2019 | St. James Cathedral, Seattle
WHAT IS THE CATHEDRAL MINISTRY CONFERENCE? The Cathedral Ministry Conference (www.cathedralministry.org) is a biennial meeting of those involved in ministry in Cathedrals and Basilicas throughout North America. Past conferences held in Orlando, San Antonio, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Seattle, St. Augustine, Milwaukee, Salt Lake City, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Santa Fe have been great successes, allowing cathedral pastors/rectors, musicians, and lay ministers to meet, interact, pray, learn, and be renewed in ministry together. As in past years, the 2019 Cathedral Ministry Conference will offer three stellar keynote presentations that will be of interest to all who are engaged in cathedral ministry as well as workshops aimed at a variety of more particular interests and concerns. The conference provides time for networking and fellowship with other cathedral ministers from around the country. This is a unique opportunity to share ideas with counterparts from cities large and small around the United States. CONFERENCE OF ROMAN CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL MUSICIANS (CRCCM) In 2019 we gather jointly with the Conference of Roman Catholic Cathedral Musicians (www.crccm.org), an annual collegial gathering of musicians serving cathedral churches in the United States and Canada. CRCCM both seeks and stands ready to consult with other liturgical and musical organizations in the pursuit of beauty and excellence in worship, for the spiritual and cultural enrichment of the community, and the greater glory of God. The 2019 Seattle Conference will be a special opportunity to gather Cathedral musicians with Cathedral rectors/ pastors and lay ministers for a time of shared learning, collegiality, and networking. ST. JAMES CATHEDRAL, SEATTLE St. James Cathedral (www.stjames-cathedral.org) is the cathedral for the Archdiocese of Seattle and the parish church for a large and diverse community of more than 2,400 families. Situated high on a hill, St. James plays both sentinel and beacon as it stands watch over a vibrant city, calling people to prayer, challenging them to justice, enticing them with beauty. Since its noteworthy restoration and renovation of 1994, the cathedral has become known for its beautiful liturgies, its critically acclaimed music program, and its extensive and innovative programs of outreach to the poor. St. James Cathedral has also become Seattle’s ecumenical and interfaith gathering place at times of crisis and mourning, a center for the arts, and a crossroads for civic conversation. THE CITY OF SEATTLE Seattle is the fastest growing major city in the US, and is the home of Amazon, Starbucks, Microsoft, Boeing, Nordstrom, and Costco, to name a few. And Seattle is an attractive city year round – even in January! In addition to the city’s famous natural surroundings—mountains, lakes, and a large inland sea—and well-known landmarks like the Space Needle and the Pike Place Market, there are many other attractions. Seattle is a regional capital for the arts, with many museums, galleries, and concert halls. In the course of the 2019 Conference, you will have ample opportunities to explore one of our country’s most beautiful cities. CONFERENCE REGISTRATION AND FEES The registration fee is $395 for a single person, $375 each for multiple registrants from the same Cathedral. Please make your check payable to ST. JAMES CATHEDRAL and send by December 1, 2018 to: Maria Laughlin St. James Cathedral 804 Ninth Avenue Seattle, WA 98104 You can also register online at www.cathedralministry.org. KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory The Hungers of a Wealthy People: The Eucharistic Bread of Life The Celebration of the Eucharist seeks to satisfy the hungers of the human heart in ways that no mere food can ever achieve. When we come to Mass, we discover just how hungry we are for the things that so often go unnoticed in our daily lives – spiritual yearnings that are far too important to be neglected or ignored. ARCHBISHOP WILTON GREGORY has served in many leading roles in the U.S. church. In November 2001, he was elected president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops following three years as vice president. He currently serves as the chair of the USCCB Committee on Divine Worship. Archbishop Gregory has written extensively on church issues, including pastoral statements on the death penalty, euthanasia/physician- assisted suicide and has published numerous articles on the subject of liturgy, particularly in the African-American community. Diana Macalintal and Nick Wagner The Cathedral as the Mother and Model for Making Disciples “Bishops are the chief stewards of the mysteries of God and leaders of the entire liturgical life in the Church committed to them” (General Introduction: Christian Initiation, 12). As “mother church” of a diocese, the Cathedral holds a vital role in the bishop’s work of directing the way we initiate seekers into these mysteries. In this keynote, we will explore the challenges and rewards of a Cathedral catechumenate ministry that can serve as the diocesan model for making disciples. NICK WAGNER and DIANA MACALINTAL are the founders and codirectors of TeamRCIA.com, a free online resource for catechumenate ministry, which they began in 2007 from their home in San Jose, California. TeamRCIA assists parish ministers to convert hearts to Jesus Christ through parish initiation ministry by helping them build thriving parishes, break free of “the way we’ve always done it,” and go way beyond their perceived limits to be inspired and inspiring. Today TeamRCIA is a community of over 20,000 parish ministers and volunteers throughout North America and beyond. Through the website, live training institutes, and a series of books published in partnership with Liturgical Press, TeamRCIA provides accessible and effective RCIA resources that help parish teams form disciples for Christ’s mission. Father Dave Dwyer, CSP Leaving the Upper Room: How the Church Needs to Reach Out to the Millennial Generation At Pentecost the first disciples were propelled forth by the Spirit, from the comfort and tight-knit community of the Upper Room out into the world to evangelize. Do our cathedral ministries embrace Pope Francis’ call to remember that “Jesus is the Lord of risk, of the eternal ‘more,’ not the Lord of comfort, security and ease” (WYD 2016). How can we leave our comfortable Upper Rooms (even virtually!) to make connections with a generation that has shown that they will not come knock on our door? Fr. Dave will speak about how we can be more proactive in reaching young adults. FR. DAVE DWYER, CSP is a Paulist priest and director of Busted Halo Ministries, publisher of BustedHalo.com and YoungAdultMinistryInaBox.com, host of the “Sacraments 101” videos and “The Busted Halo Show” every afternoon on SiriusXM radio. He has appeared on CNN, Fox News, NBC News, Entertainment Tonight and The Daily Show. He worked in campus ministry at the Universities of Colorado and Texas. Prior to ordination he directed television for MTV and Comedy Central.

Seasonal embellishments in our churches identify visually, and to all of our senses, the Paschal and Incarnational cycles of the Liturgical Year. This session will give a greater understanding of the appropriate placement, scale and symbolism of objects in our liturgical environment. Presenter: Carol Frenning, President, Association of Consultants for Liturgical Spaces. C-2 The Rights and Wrongs of the Rite of Election One of the main liturgies of the diocese is the Rite of Election, which is the “focal point of the Church’s concern for the catechumens” (RCIA, 121). It is one of the few annual diocesan liturgies at which people from every parish participate, and it is often the first experience of catechumens and their godparents of the bishop and the wider church. This liturgy can be a formative moment for discipleship, or it can be a confusing ritual that miscatechizes the purpose of election. We’ll discuss some pitfalls to avoid and ways to rethink this liturgy within the context of the intention of the rite. Presenter: Diana Macalintal. C-3 Capital Campaigns: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly In this lively panel discussion, experienced fundraisers share stories of capital campaign successes as well as asks that went awry. We’ll explore campaigns both large and small and invite participants to share their experiences as well. Presenters: Deacon Pierce Murphy, Executive Director of Stewardship and Development, Archdiocese of Seattle; Monsignor Robert Ritchie, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York City; Terri Ashmore, Basilica of St. Mary, Minneapolis. C-4 Come, Follow Me: Preaching Workshop An opportunity for priests and deacons attending the conference to explore the ministry of preaching with a gifted preacher and teacher. Presenter: Bishop Daniel Mueggenborg, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Seattle. Bishop Mueggenborg is the author of Come Follow Me, reflections on the Sunday Gospels. C-5 All about Alpha Have you thought about launching Alpha in your parish? Do you have questions about the program and how it fits in the Catholic or Cathedral setting? This panel will explore the challenges and blessings of undertaking Alpha in both urban and neighborhood settings. Presenters: Julianna Castro, St. James Cathedral; Johnny Hom, Holy Family Parish, Kirkland; and Cathy Rowley, Mary Queen of Peace, Sammamish.

For those really willing to look and to search, there is a greatness to be discovered in a cathedral and a whole world of opportunities to be explored. Cathedrals realize a few of those opportunities, but only a few, and I know a cathedral will lose its soul the day it thinks it has realized them all. Cathedrals, like so many other human enterprises, are works in progress, unfinished symphonies. Like the God they are meant to image and honor, they defy easy definition and they never run out of possibilities. Father Michael G. Ryan St. James Cathedral, Seattle TESTIMONIALS “Cathedrals are the hearts of our dioceses. Thank you for helping with our heart health.” Monsignor Robert T. Ritchie, New York City “Every Cathedral is unique, but at our heart and in our purpose we share a mission. The conference is a great way to experience the diversities of Cathedrals but also how each accomplishes the same mission.” Very Rev. Ed Steiner, Nashville “Absolutely loved the conference. It was like we were a big family. Informative, useful and spiritually invigorating.” Rev. Greg Finzen, Sioux City, Iowa “An extraordinary and worthwhile educational experience in Cathedral Ministry.” Rev. Bob Brown, Baltimore
