Stewardship Moment “The stone the builders rejected has become the corner stone…” - Matthew 21:42 Jesus was rejected by the religious and political leaders of his day, as well as ordinary citizens. Living a stewardship lifestyle may cause you to be “rejected” by others in today’s society. For example, saying grace before a meal in a restaurant may attract some strange looks from some. But to others it is sign that God is alive and well!

Page 3 PASTOR’S PAGE "THE CHOSEN" A few months ago someone brought to my attention a TV series on the internet entitled "The Chosen." It portrays, for the first time ever, the life of Jesus Christ in a series format. It has been independently produced by a non-Hollywood group (is that a surprise?) and is, I believe, funded solely by those who wish to give to support it. It can be streamed off the internet via an app (more on that later). I just don't watch much TV anymore, so I didn't get around to taking it in until a few weeks later. (Frankly, I’m not much into apps and streaming and such, and I really didn't have the desire to get into it to see this.) But finally, with Fr. Metzger taking the lead on the technology side, I started to watch it with him. It's fantastic. It really is fantastic. It's some of the best TV I've ever seen – and it has the added blessing of being about Our Lord. It is so well-written and filmed. The episodes are all less than an hour – some are 40 minutes, some 50 minutes . . . and no commercials. It's free for the viewing, although you can become one of the "financial supporters" of this if you should choose to. The first "season" consisted of eight episodes and they are all available for viewing. The second season will be available once it is all done being filmed – hopefully sometime relatively soon. The series simply takes the Gospels and fleshes them out into TV episodes. There's a lot of room for filling in the holes that the Gospels provides – for example, one entire episode is centered around Jesus' first miracle at Cana – turning water into wine. But the episode gives a glimpse into a Jewish wedding feast and all that went into it in a way that is not presented in the Gospels themselves. There are stories presented about the Apostles and where they came from, their families, their own personal histories and issues before they met Jesus, etc. Of course that is all speculation, as the Gospels are silent on those things, but there's never a false note given by the writers and filmmakers. It's fascinating to go along with the speculation that the series provides concerning so much of the daily life of Our Lord and the Apostles and the people who come into contact with Him. What strikes me in particular as I watched was that this series gives me a chance to "discover" Jesus Christ like the Apostles and others did; we're so used to simply inheriting Him from what has always been given to us that it's refreshing to meet Him anew and acquaint oneself with Him as they did. Two further things: First, the characters don't usually look the way you expect them to look. The most striking example of that for me was the Blessed Mother. She is a very unexpected personality as she is portrayed – but it works. It totally works. Perhaps she was in fact more like this than most of the statues we have of her . . . Even Jesus Himself is of a different "look" than the usual image we have of Him – but it totally works. Matthew is certainly different . . . find that one out for yourself. Secondly, the characters are not introduced formally and obviously. You meet characters as the episodes go on and you are given the chance to try and figure out who they are. Who is that? . . . why, that's Mary Magdalene . . . It's fascinating to "meet" them and "get to know them" slowly but surely as one would have done if one had actually been there. I completely encourage anyone to check out this series and watch the first season. You need to watch each episode in order – don't skip. And don't watch too many at once. Watch one episode – and let it sink in for a week or so, and then watch another one. Don't binge this – there's too much there to take in if one does it too fast. Enjoy this – perhaps a Sunday evening kind of thing with the family or on your own. Here's how you can watch this (Fr. Metzger swears everyone else besides me will totally get how this works . . . ): download "The Chosen" on the App Store or Google Play, or the Android Store. Then simply play the episode directly from the app. Fr. Metzger gets some kind of cord and plugs in his smartphone to the big TV we have in the basement and watches it that way – and it deserves to be seen on a bigger screen than on one's phone, although I suppose one could watch it that way if they had to. In any event – I very rarely recommend video media – this may be the first time I have in my years here, but "The Chosen" is worth recommending. I hope you take it in. Fr. Duchschere, Pastor
