Worship Music Notes for Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th June Links for the music for each hymn is included in the bulletin, full texts are in the Service Booklet. Paste the link into your browser so you can listen, or sing along. MUSIC NOTES Charles Wesley’s hymn “Rejoice, the Lord is King” (TIS 216) is a call to worship the risen Christ. The hymn text rejoices in the kingship of Christ who rules “over earth and heaven.” The music by John Darwall (1731-1789) is characterised by joyful rising melody lines. Delores Dufner (b. 1939) is a Benedictine Sister from Minnesota, and a writer of hymns and song texts. In addition to her music leadership at the monastery, she has also worked in Australia as a liturgical music consultant for the Diocese of Ballarat, Victoria. Her hymn, “In this place your Word is planted” is based on today’s reading from the Gospel of Mark. She writes: “I believe my task as a writer of hymn texts is to discover and give expression to the prayer hidden but nonetheless already present in the hearts of believers.” The Choir Reflection, “Come, touch our hearts” was written by retired Canadian Bishop, Gordon Light, who, together with three other clergy formed a songwriting group known as The Common Cup Company. “The words of the hymn draw us into relationship with God, as we ask for God’s touch in our lives and work as God’s people of covenant.” “Made in God’ likeness” (TIS 671) with its vibrant images of Australian bird life was written by Australian jazz pianist and composer Alister Spence (b.1955), and Patricia Lewis (b.1938,) a Sydney English and Drama teacher and writer. Under the title, “Called to Create,” it was first used as the theme for the Biennial Conference of the Christian Dance Fellowship of Australia in 1986. The hymn has been described as an “Avian Liturgy of the Hours:” At morning, noon and night Australian birds give us examples of how to follow God and “create a new world for the Lord.” Originally written for a New Year's Day service, Brian Wren’s hymn, “This is a day of new beginnings” (TIS 653) is widely used in many contexts as a hymn of faith and hope, that in the love of Christ we are able to face the future: “With the Spirit’s daring, let us step from the past and leave behind our disappointment, guilt, and grieving, seeking new paths...” Elizabeth Smith is an Australian Anglican priest and a prolific writer of modern texts set to well-known hymn tunes. She wrote the challenging hymn, “God gives us a future” (TIS 687) to express the thought that “God is calling us to be a different people today than we were yesterday...” The first two verses have been described as “a statement of faith and reality;” the third is a prayer of response. The tune, named after the English village Camberwell, was written by English priest, John Michael Brierley (b. 1932) before his ordination. 3
INTROIT HYMN—Choir 9am Service You are a light on the hill, O people. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3XmUFAxvNo Welcome PROCESSIONAL HYMN: Rejoice, the Lord is King. All Services https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVKfpa0hwBI PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty God, without you we are unable to please you: mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. FIRST READING: 1 Samuel 15.34-16.13 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house in Gibeah of Saul. Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. And the Lord was sorry that he had made Saul king over Israel. The Lord said to Samuel, ‘How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.’ Samuel said, ‘How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me.’ And the Lord said, ‘Take a heifer with you, and say, “I have come to sacrifice to the Lord .” Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you.’ Samuel did what the Lord commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, ‘Do you come peaceably?’ He said, ‘Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord ; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.’ And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, ‘Surely the Lord ’s anointed is now before the Lord .’ But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.’ Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, ‘Neither has the Lord chosen this one.’ Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, ‘Neither has the Lord chosen this one.’ Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, ‘The Lord has not chosen any of these.’ Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Are all your sons here?’ And he said, ‘There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.’ And Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.’ He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. The Lord said, ‘Rise and 4
anoint him; for this is the one.’ Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah. Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. PSALM 20 Response - The Lord will save his anointed. May the Lord hear you in the day of trouble: the God of Jacob lift you up to safety. May he send you his help from the sanctuary: and be your strong support from Zion. May he remember all your offerings: and accept with favour your burnt sacrifices,…………...R Grant you your heart’s desire: and fulfil all your purposes. May we also rejoice in your victory and triumph in the name of our God: the Lord perform all your petitions. Now I know that the Lord will save his anointed: that he will answer him from his holy heaven with the victorious strength of his right hand…………..R Some put their trust in chariots and some in horses: but we will trust in the name of the Lord our God. They are brought down and fallen: but we are made strong and stand upright. O Lord, save the king: and hear us when we call upon you…………………..…….R SECOND READING: 2 Corinthians 5.6–10, 14–17 Brothers and sisters, we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord – for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. For all of us must appear before the judgement seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil. The love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them. From now on, 5
therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. GRADUAL HYMN: In this place your Word is planted. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdAbmeZGFOY Sunday 7am and 9am The Lord be with you. And also with you. GOSPEL: Mark 4.26–34 Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia! The Kingdom of God is like the tiny mustard seed, which when it is sown grows up to be the greatest of shrubs. Alleluia! The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark, chapter 4, beginning at the 26th verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. Such a large crowd gathered around Jesus that he got into a boat and began to teach them using many parables. Jesus said, ‘The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.’ Jesus also said, ‘With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.’ With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples. This is the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. 6
ADDRESS - REFLECTION AFTER THE ADDRESS—Choir Come touch our hearts that we may know compassion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7522NhxKM8s PRAYERS FOR THE PEOPLE: Living Lord, Open our hearts and minds to your wonderful presence. Allow us to see the Light of Christ throughout creation, shining through despite the man-made disasters and suffering caused by greed, power and selfishness. We bring to mind those nations wracked by the covid pandemic, poverty, internal conflicts and natural disasters at this time and pray for a global extension of human kindness and generosity from all world leaders. Give us all the conscience to realise that we each have a part to play in extending your joy and your peace wherever we can so your kingdom of love and forgiveness will grow into the largest of all gardens. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Holy Lord, We bring before you the global Christian community. Give to our church leaders throughout the world, wisdom and humility to enable them to lead and guide your people in the ways of truth, love and peace. Lord today we pray for our own church leaders - Jonathan, Daniel, Jim, Don and Linda. Fill them with boldness and the faith to continue to stand up for what is Christlike -imbue them with your compassion and vision to guide this community into action for you - making a difference one soul at a time. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Loving Lord, Today we pray for the communities in which we live and work. Make us your instruments in those places so that all will know we are Christians by our love. We thank you for the prayers and generosity of so many in our church community who have given and continue to give of their time, their compassion, their money and their goods to ensure all who come here feel held, prayed for and supported. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Giving Lord, We remember today all those who live with loneliness, illness, fear or despair. Give us warm and generous hearts and help us notice these people, reach out to these people and include these people in our prayers, in our activities, in our visiting. We pray especially for those we know who are ill or frail or in pain at this time, remembering our own Father Jim and those we know personally and name here ……………….. Help us 7
to go the extra mile for those known to us who are suffering at this time – a call, a text message, an email, a visit, a gift. Lord in you mercy, hear our prayer. Eternal Lord, Give us patience as we wait for your coming again but also give us courage and faith to live as if you are coming today. We thank you for your promise that the new creation has come, the old has gone, the new is here. We are yours eternally right now. We pray for those who grieve as they remember loved ones who have died. Be with them in their sorrow and give them your peace – the peace that surpasses all understanding. Walk with us, for 3 or 6kms, starting at Orleigh Park, West End from 8am. Raise funds to resource the Romero Centre so it can continue to provide basic human rights such as food, shelter, legal advice, access to language skills, employ- ment and meaningful community connections. Romero Centre, 8 Dutton Street, Dutton Park, QLD 4102 Samaritan’s Purse: Operation Christmas Child Over many years our Parish has generously supported this world wide cause and we have been praying that this will continue this year. Shoe boxes are filled with items that a child needs for school, play, hygiene etc and are sent overseas. The Pandemic continues to make this outreach vital for many children living in poverty and in communities where there is great need. We start the project this year with a stack of boxes at the ready, some pens and colour pen- cils, but we need your help with donations of other items. Some suggestions are: pencil cas- es, small toys and cars, hair combs, toothbrushes, soap, simple play clothes, rubber thongs, small carry bags and financial donations. Recipient children are aged from 2 – 14. There is a blue crate near the front entrance of the church in which items can be placed. Thanking you in anticipation for your on-going support. Blessings, Diane Hansen, Lyle Freeman and Lindy Clarke. 10
