PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Happy New Year! As we embark on 2021, I would like to thank everyone for the generous contributions to the Employee Christmas Fund. Our staff has worked very hard through the past 10 months to stay healthy; keep the members safe; and to continue to provide us with a smooth operating Club during these trying conditions. In this year’s issue of The Score, there have been various references to our accomplishments in continuing to provide positive member experiences during this past year. We are pleased to repeat that, in spite of COVID: • 25,000 rounds of golf • 38 PGA Junior Leagers and 40 Junior Tennis Players each week • 6,020 To-Go meals served Kiki Matthews • 58 new Members • 35 Water Aerobics attendees and 16,998 visitors to the Pool • 2,388 Tennis and Pickle Ball Court Reservations, 8 USTA Leagues and 1,461 Lessons and Clinics • Completion of the budgeted pool restroom “facelift” It is the sincere hope of the Board that as we see an improvement in the fight against the pandemic, we will be able to complete some of the capital projects that were previously approved. These include the forward tee and clay court lifting projects. Ongoing operations will, however, be totally dependent on the guidelines / regulations set forth by Governor Cooper. Again, we wish you a Happy New Year and let’s look forward to a better 2021! HOLIDAY HOURS OF OPERATION The Main Clubhouse will be closed for all dining and services January 1-January 12. MANAGER’S MESSAGE Happy new year! We’re at that short time in the year when good golf and tennis days are rare. We keep an eye on the weather forecast and take advantage of every warm day. Meanwhile, everyone still has to eat. Right? Don’t dirty your own kitchen. One of my favorite days of the year is in December when I distribute Christmas checks to the employees. It’s a day when I get to tell each employee that Members provided an extra gesture to wish their club employees a Merry Christmas. I wish I could show you how the employees react. Here are some statistics: The total fund was $55,490. The average contribution was $99.87. Each full time, active employee who worked all year received $1,200. All other active employees received a smaller amount partially based on how much they have worked this year. The staff was very appreciative. And they especially appreciate the good job and the warm relationships you Anthony Chelena provided them in a chaotic year. GOLF Please be sure to check out the 2021 Tournament Schedule. This truly has something for everyone. We are excited to offer two night golf events this year, so get ready to get your glow on. Our Nine & Dine events have continued to grow and are a great place for our new members to meet other golfing couples. Mark your calendars for upcoming events you plan to play in. We look forward to seeing everyone out this year. Normally middle/high school golf tryouts are in February. Parents, don’t let your students wait until the week of tryouts to start thinking about getting their golf game ready. Students need to plan ahead and start practicing when weather allows in January. Our staff is available for individual instruction by appointment. Speaking of junior golfers, our PGA Junior League will begin sign ups in March. We anticipate starting our first practice in early April. This continues to be a fun way for Jay King our youth golfers, ages 13 and under, to enjoy golf in a team sport. Our fall PGA Junior League was successfully with 38 participants. Thank you to our members for your generous gifts to the employee Christmas fund! You have enabled us to give our families a wonderful Christmas. Happy New Year! GREAT SHOTS Terry Brock made his 7th Hole in One December 3rd on hole #4. He used his 23 degree hybrid. This was his first hole-in-one at Hendersonville Country Club. Patti Brotherton holed her tee shot for an ace on hole #13 on December 10th. She used a pitching wedge from 98 yards. Charlie Phillips shot his age (73) on December 11th. GRIP PROMO - 10% discount during the month of January HANDICAP COMMITTEE UPDATE Happy New Year! It has to be a better year than the last one, right? As HCC golf members, some of you may have been prompted by the Golf Handicap Information Network (GHIN) system to set up a digital profile at the beginning of the year. This amounts to creating a password to go along with your email address, and it is a one-time action that will allow you to continue to access GHIN from your mobile device or home computer. If you decide not to set up a GHIN profile, you will still be able to post scores at the pro shop kiosk. Check with the pro shop staff if you have questions about creating a GHIN profile. Many of you are USGA members. I confess that I first joined the USGA 15 years ago only in order to get a new U.S. Open ball cap every year, but I have become a staunch advocate of this Dick Kauffold organization which does a lot to promote the game, standardize competition, and grow participant numbers. All USGA members receive the official quarterly USGA publication called Golf Journal. Along with various interesting articles about golf courses, unusual golf venues, individual golfers, and the game of golf in general, the winter 2020 edition of Golf Journal contains some handicap system trivia. For example, it turns out that almost exactly half of all male golfers who hold a Handicap Index in the U.S. fall into the handicap range of 10 to 20. The average Handicap Index for the 1.93 million men who have a Handicap Index in the U.S. is 14.2, and the average for the more than 493,000 women with a Handicap Index is 27.5. Thinking of your own index, you didn’t know that you were that good at this game, did you? Have a great year with lots of golf rounds, and play today, post today!

WGA Happy New Year! I’m hoping 2021 brings us all to a better place! To health, prosperity and freedom to make our own decisions and bring us happiness and friendship. As I sit here writing this column, it is our first real cold week with temperatures in the 20’s overnight. The cold weather is a reminder that winter is definitely here and we all need to remember the importance of layering up our clothes to keep warm out on the golf course. We will be having an executive meeting this month so that we get an extra early start to planning our golf season. Since Member/Guest has been moved to June, we need to get our committee in place and start the process. Deneen Porter and I will be spending a day to clean out the closets in the Ladies locker room and redo the bulletin boards. If you are interested in helping, Leslie Moses please contact me. Barbara Clay continues to organize Thursday fun golf and/or lunch. For all other times, call the Golf Shop or try to make your own groups. Please send me photos of your outings! There will be no need for Monthly Tournament Chairs this coming season. We will be moving the sign up sheets to the Golf Shop. They will be located in a book (placement to be determined) so you can sign up for as many dates as you want at a time. The Golf Shop will take the appropriate sheet on Saturday mornings and do the pairings for the upcoming Tuesday. Tee times and pairings will be posted on the website. Please do not call in your names for sign up other than for a late addition or change Saturday or Sunday. We do not want to overwhelm the Pro Shop with this task. RENEW YOUR WGA MEMBERSHIP January is membership month. You will be receiving an email from Deborah Altman asking for your consent to renew. Please answer in a timely manner as we need to get those names to billing and start funding our new season activities. $70 is the annual fee for a full season of jam packed fun! If you know someone who is interested in joining the WGA, please give that info to Deb Altman. NOTABLES Congratulations to Patti Brotherton on her Hole-In-One on Thursday, December 10. Awesome job! SAVE THE DATE OPENING COFFEE AND SCRAMBLE - April 1 Sign up for the scramble in the Golf Shop! We will meet at 9:00am, have our meeting and our Scramble will follow!
