President’s Report As Term One progresses at pace, I write with some news of upcoming opportunities for our members and the broader science teaching community. I also offer a special welcome our new members and hope that your joining STAV is a rich and rewarding experience. Welcome to the STAV family and to a long tradition of supporting and representing Science educators and Science education in Victoria. Please make a note of the following activities and opportunities and feel free to share this information with colleagues within and beyond your schools. National Science Week The theme for National Science Week 2021 is Food: Different by Design. The theme references the United Nations International Year of Fruits and Vegetables and the International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development. Food: Different by Design will cover a broad range of areas in food production and sustainable agriculture, enabling students to explore topics such as biosecurity, food technology and laboratory- developed foods. Applications are invited from Australian schools (preschools to senior secondary) who are conducting a STEM-related activity or event during National Science Week between 14-22 August 2021. President’s Report continued VCE Science Conferences Series 2021: On Demand resources available As always, February is a big month for STAV’s VCE Conferences. In 2020, we took the bold step to deliver the entire 2021 series online, building on the success of STAV STEM Online 2020 and STAVCON 2020. My sincere thanks to our presenters, session moderators, staff and all delegates for making each of the conference days such a great success. All live sessions were recorded and are now available online via STAV’s website. Sessions include a diverse array of workshops from practicing teachers, industry experts and sponsors, engaging keynote addresses, the VCAA updates, and Chief Assessors’ Examination Reports. Newsletter of The Science Teachers’ Association of Victoria Inc. Science Talent Search Report STS handbooks for 2021 were mailed to STAV members and subscriber schools in early February. If you haven’t received a copy, contact the STAV office to be sent one. You can also get copies of the handbook and other valuable information from the website www.sciencevictoria.com.au. All entry is by online registration, which opened on February 26. If you want to use proformas to collect student and judge information before you enter the data we have provided a student form and a judge form on the website. Click on Registration Information. Note that a volunteer judge must be nominated for each 12 entries or part thereof. After the first 12 entries submitted, you must enter another judge before continuing. Please ensure that you enter online data carefully. STAV doesn’t correct entries for you unless you pay a fee. Please also ensure that you enter your email address accurately, otherwise you won’t be able to re-enter the system and you won’t receive emails containing competition information. STAV and Science Talent Search would like to congratulate our Victorian entrants who were finalists or semi- finalists in the 2020 BHP Billiton Science and Engineering Awards. The donors of any such materials will be acknowledged with the items in the archives. Forceful Experiences Colouring Newton’s Laws of Motion By Christina Hart This resource, for teachers and students of general science at the junior high school level, introduces Newton's Laws of motion at a qualitative level. 'Forceful Experiences' takes students' experiences of motion as a starting point, and guides them to construct a more powerful framework for understanding their everyday world. The approach also provides a secure foundation for those students who will go on to study physics at a more advanced, mathematical level.
