Be a Fancy Clothes Maker Asako (Mako) Kono Japan Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology TAFE Queensland Brisbane “I ultimately wanted to immerse myself in making fashion.” Mako grew up in Japan and worked in fashion retail and with a fashion magazine publisher before arriving in Australia to pursue an art history degree at university. “I wasn’t enjoying my studies very much and when I asked the course coordinator what jobs would be available to me once I graduate, she said I could either be a museum curator or an art teacher.” She says, “Neither prospects appealed to me, because I ultimately wanted to immerse myself in making fashion.” Mako began asking friends and researched her study options before deciding to study at TAFE Queensland. She initially had very limited sewing experience, so she found the practical study and small class structure better suited her needs. Mako found all the teachers to be very experienced - they shared their knowledge and experiences to enable students to achieve their goals. “Now I am in the industry working full-time and actually using the skills I learnt.” After she graduated from TAFE Queensland, Mako found part-time work with one of TAFE Queensland’s fashion industry partners, Glitter and Dance and was later offered a full-time position with them that same year. The family run Brisbane company has been a dance fabric supplier since 1994 and also helps customers create the perfect dance costume. Glitter and Dance has regularly provided internship and work opportunities for TAFE Queensland’s fashion students and graduates. “Now I am in the industry working full-time and actually using the skills I learnt, from designing and pattern making with CAD to the manufacturing process.” “I am very glad that I chose TAFE Queensland.” 10 www.tafeqld.edu.au TAFE Queensland International Course Guide 11
