Killarney Secondary * 6454 Killarney Street * Vancouver, BC V5S 2X7 Phone: 604-713-8950 * Fax: 604-713-8949 SEPTEMBER 2020 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE It is my pleasure, as the Principal of Killarney Secondary, to welcome all students, parents, and staff at the start of another school year. This year, like the end of last year, will be different because of the Covid-19 pandemic necessitat- ing changes to school structures to maximize the health and safety for our school community. Some of the key lessons learned from last Spring include the difficulty of juggling 8 courses online and the importance of face-to-face classes for social connection and mental well-being. As a result, this year the school District has moved to a quarter system which will see most students completing 2 courses at a time in 10-week chunks. In addition, daily face-to-face instruction and remote learning are incorporated into the schedule. For further details please see my August 26, 2020 letter. https://www.vsb.bc.ca/schools/killarney/About-Us/Publications/Documents/sbfile/200827/ Aug%2026%20-%20KGill%20-%20Letter%20to%20Parents%20and%20Students%20-%20re%20Sept%20start.pdf The coming year will still be filled with promise and anticipation for a new cohort of grade eight students beginning their high school career, for junior students challenging themselves to greater achievement and excellence in the higher grades, for new arrivals to Canada getting ready to study and learn in a new environment, and for the graduating students of 2021 beginning the final chapter of their secondary school experience. Included in this newsletter you will find important information relating to school opening procedures. Please note the contents carefully and do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions or inquiries. I thank Killarney parents in advance for their support of school programs and activities. The Killarney Parent Advisory Committee (KPAC) serves the dual role of connecting parents to the school and of providing education around a variety of issues connected to parenting high-school age children. Families who are new to our school community are encouraged to participate in meetings organized by KPAC. It is an excellent way to learn about the school and to network with other parents. As the school year unfolds please visit the school website https://www.vsb.bc.ca/schools/killarney/Pages/default.aspx on a regular basis to check for updated information and/or announcements. This will be even more important than ever as some of our large, in-person gatherings will not be possible. The calendar tab can be used to access a monthly Google calendar which provides the most up-to-date calendar information. In addition, the free Killarney School App will once again provide students and parents with timely information regarding all the events in our busy school! For the 2020-21 school year staff will continue to refine the adoption of redesigned provincial curricula. A new approach to curriculum delivery also necessitates a re-examination of assessment. To this end, Killarney’s school growth plan for this year will continue with the inquiry into the relationship between relevant, authentic assessment and the fostering of student growth and investment. This is connected to the school’s broader mission of providing an environment within which all learners can be successful. We look forward to further advancing this approach to learning as another school year begins. IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL PARENTS…. LETTER OF INTENT TO RETURN LATE TO SCHOOL Please be advised that a form needs to be completed for any student(s) who expect to return to school LATER THAN noon on Thursday, September 10, 2020 Note: If the school cannot verify your child’s attendance at school by Thursday, September 10, 2020, your child’s space will be given to another student on the school’s waitlist. “The best and most beautiful things in the world NOTICE OF LATE RETURN FORM HERE: cannot be seen or even touched—they must be https://www.vsb.bc.ca/schools/killarney/Families/Forms/Documents/ felt with the heart. ONLINE KILLARNEY FORMS Due to CoVID protocols, we have had to create an easier way for our parents to provide the data we need. Instead of filling out several different forms, you only need to fill out ONE! Food4School is intended for children who are NOT provided with food from home and cannot pay for food at school. Funding is provided by the Provincial CommunityLINK grant. There is an enrolment cap based on the Social Service Index Data for each school. Once an application is received, it must be reviewed on an individual basis before approval by the Principal. STUDENTS WITH MEDICAL CONDITIONS Parents & Guardians, please ensure that the school is informed of any medical condition that may require emer- gency care at school ie: anaphylaxis, diabetes, seizures and severe asthma, serious heart conditions. This infor- mation will be kept in the office and shared with appropriate school staff. You are responsible for ensuring that the school is informed of any changes to medical information or emer- gency contact information throughout the year. Please assist us in keeping our records current by completing the enclosed MEDICAL INFORMATION FORM. Please go to: https://survey.vsb.bc.ca/TakeSurvey.aspx? SurveyID=l2KI376M Students in Grade 9 to 12 need to inform us of any changes to their medical condition. Forms are available from the main office for pick up and is accessible online from our website . It is strongly recommended that students who carry emergency medi- cations such as inhalers, epi-pens or diabetic emergency kits keep these medications or supplies with them at all times in a fanny pack, purse or back pack which travels to class and on field trips with them. Emergency supplies/ medications stored in lockers will delay access to the med- ication during an emergency. Some parents choose to keep an extra epi-pen or inhaler in the First Aid room. If this option is chosen, parents are responsible for checking expiry dates and providing new supplies as needed. Please see and speak with the First Aid Attendants to make arrangements. Also, a “Medication Administration” form completed by a physician is required for any medication being dispensed by a school staff member. Copies of these forms are avail- able from the office. Click here: https://www.vsb.bc.ca/schools/killarney/Families/ Forms/Documents/sbfile/200218/Permission%20to%20give%20Medication.pdf Additionally, if there are specific concerns about a student’s health in a particular class, for example, P.E. for a student who has seizures or Foods class for a student with anaphylaxis to peanuts, please communicate this information directly to the appropriate teacher and grade counselor. ATTENDANCE—WE CARE! Regular attendance is required of all students. If students are marked absent for one class or more, the “School Messenger” Computer system will call home. Why is attendance so important? Short Term: Studies show that students that are late or absent from school earn lower grades. Long Term: Studies show that students who are late and absent from school tend to, once over 25 years old; get fired from work more often, earn less money, hold more jobs for a shorter period of time, and have a far greater chance of being involved with our court system. We need you to be in class and on time each day! Handwritten early dismissals due to field trips or team sports must be shown to the subject teacher then brought to the office when the student signs out. Students who become ill during the school day must report to the medical room in the office. The first aid attendant may need to contact the parent and advise the parent of the student’s condition. Please provide correct contact numbers for this purpose in the event of an emergency. All students leaving the school during the day MUST sign out at the office. Parents/guardians are welcome to phone the appropriate counsellor to check a student’s attendance record. REPORTING AN ABSENCE Clock here for the form: https://www.vsb.bc.ca/schools/killarney/Families/Forms/Documents/sbfile/200211/ABSENCE%20NOTE%20- %20SEPT%202019.pdf Please report student absences as follows: • By phone (604-713-8950) - Absences taken by phone are adjusted on the computer system usually within the same day, unless data • entry is delayed for any reason. • By email—Some teachers request a call or an email. Please check our staff email directly to send an email to the appropriate teacher. • By note—Please use the paper note that is available to print from our website. • Students may pick up an absence note from the office as well. These notes provide more detailed and accurate data for us to input. Thank you for your cooperation. • Signing out—If a student is ill during school hours, they must come to the office to sign out. Prior to them leaving, they will be asked to contact their parent for permission. • Signing in—If a student has missed any classes due to an appointment, they must sign in at the office when they arrive at the school. A note would also be beneficial to show their teachers why they were absent. • Field Trips—The teacher is asked to compile a list of attendees for field trips Print out the paper form based on forms returned to them. ABSENCE NOTE These lists are then forwarded to the fill out and bring to the teacher when office for data entry. If no list was received, you may get a call through our they return to school from illness. automated system. • Automated message—You will receive an automated message if your son/daughter has missed a class at any time of the school day. To correct any errors, you must con- tact the teacher who marked them absent.
