SCHOOL PROFILE Our Whakatau Ko mātou ngā hoa, ngā akonga, ngā kaikiaki hoki, I roto i ngā korero me ngā mahi katoa. Ka aro ake kia tae atu ki te taumata teitei, mai I te ngākau pono. Ka whataatu I ngā uāra me ngā waiaro nā te hiringa matua me te pukumahi. He waka eke noa haumi e, hui e, tāiki e We are friends, learners and guardians in all we say and do. We strive for excellence by persevering. We display values and attitudes through giving our best, being determined and working hard. We are all in this together moving in the same direction. We are bound, united, together as one. Our logo was developed in 2014 by a group of students working with our Art Teacher. It captures the ‘essence’ of the consultation with all students who provided input of ideas and meanings for what it means to be a successful “Stanhope” student. FRIENDS│Whakaāhoahoa The 8 school levels that children go through at school (Years 1-8) are represented in the ‘tail’ of the logo (part of the 8 limbed Taniwha)– and the Koru next to the tail portrays a baby fern slowly unwinding over its adolescent lifetime as it grows into a mature frond. All components work harmoniously together. LEARNERS│Ākonga The “S” shape within the mountain which is Maungarei (at the top) portrays the spirit of excellence through perseverance. The students are the climbers of the mountain, striving to achieve school goals and life skills required on a student’s journey through life. They climb the “S” for STANHOPE which is also like a road. GUARDIANS│Kaitiaki A Taniwha called Te Moko Ika ā Hikuwaru with 8 limbs came to Aotearoa with the Tainui waka, and settled in the Panmure Basin. It has influenced the logo as it was also the Guardian of the sacred spring which feeds the spring known as Te Waipuna o Raiatea, which we know as Waipuna). Our Community Stanhope Road School opened on 4 February 1958 with a roll of 300 students to cater for an increase in numbers at the neighbouring Ellerslie and Panmure schools. The school opened with four classrooms and a newly developed grass field. Currently the school has over 500 students and 24 classrooms with a Performing Arts Centre, a Hall, an Art room, a Library and a warm welcoming staff room and office area. The first Parent Teachers' Association had the 'ambitious' goal of holding a school fair with the specific aim of raising enough money to purchase a school piano and a film strip projector. Move forward almost 6 decades and the current Parent Support Group raises money for digital learning technologies allowing us to ‘live local, learn global’. We truly celebrate being a diverse and multicultural community. At our last Cultural Week, at the end of 2017, there were 60 nations represented. We have a talented team of teachers who are committed to working collaboratively to improve achievement outcomes for all our students. We have recently reviewed and implemented a new Stanhope curriculum and have a strong focus on professional development to keep on growing teacher practice. The school aspires to a greater emphasis on STEAM and digital technologies and we are committed to implementing modern learning environments to assist student learning. Our families are very supportive of the school and work strongly in partnership with us to progress their children's learning goals. Stanhope is currently part of the Maungakiekie Kāhui Ako and is represented by having the Lead Principal and an Across School Mentor on our staff. We are a unified, collaborative team of professionals who are dedicated to celebrating success in all forms, and to being good ‘Friends, Learners and Guardians’. Our Teams | Ngā tima At Stanhope Road School we have four teaching teams: ⋅ WHAKATŌTANGA: 8 classes, Years 1-2 students ⋅ TUPURANGA: 5 classes, Years 3-4 students ⋅ PUĀWAITANGA: 5 classes, Years 5-6 students ⋅ HAUTŪTANGA: 4 classes, Years 7-8 students We are working actively to strengthen relationships with our local early childhood community to promote strong, effective transitions to school. The key competencies are taught through Inquiry learning programmes, with more of a focus on ‘Discovery’ in Whakatōtanga. Being a very diverse community, we believe in providing programmes that enrich the school experience for all our learners. During their time in Tupuranga, the children grow as self-regulated learners. Puāwaitanga are working in an Innovative Learning space, which is helping them to become more independent learners while exploring good leadership opportunities. A further Innovative Learning space is soon to be completed for our thriving Hautūtanga department. These intermediate students make a key contribution to the life of the school through their leadership development in preparation for their transition to college.
