Message from the Park & Recreation Director I must say that my first two years here in Great Falls have been quite the whirlwind tour, getting to know staff and the community, meeting with community groups, advocating for parks and recreation, establishing a Park District and the projects that come with it, learning the operations of our department and the City, having a management company take over operation of the golf courses, just to identify a few things that have happened during that short time. Don’t take that wrong, it has been a great two years so far! As I was looking through files from a previous Director, I came across this message and it reminded me of the importance and value of what a Parks and Recreation department provides for their community. I’d like to share that message with the community again, because I couldn’t agree with it more and it has so much merit regardless of when it was written. Having heard a lot of conversations being passed around regarding the possible use of park land for various reasons other than their given purpose, I’ve been wondering why parks continue to come up as possible places for new buildings and infrastructure and I can only think of one major reason why this topic continues to percolate; many people don’t understand the importance a parks and recreation department plays in a community and how it benefits them. So, why do we exist and what role does a parks and recreation department play in the community? Let me begin by saying parks and recreation department’s function and impact communities through three basic pillars; 1) Conservation, 2) Health and Wellness, 3) Social Equity. Conservation - Parks are critical in the role of preserving natural resources that have real economic benefits for communities. Our department strives to protect open space, connect citizens to nature, and provide programming opportunities that help engage the community in conservation practices. Even our fabulous tree canopy provides many unforeseen economic benefits to the community. Lower air conditioning costs and reduced heating costs are just two of the direct benefits associated with a tree canopy. Trees bring natural elements and wildlife habitats into urban surroundings, all of which increase the quality of life of Great Falls residents. Health and Wellness - Park and recreation facilities provide amenities that promote physical activity, play, and movement; all of which are essential to living a healthy life. Staff sits on various committees and boards that promote exercise, healthy eating and community engagement. Events such as the Ice Breaker, Easter Egg Hunt or Electric City Winter Classic offer opportunities to improve one’s health or get out and enjoy themselves and forget about the stresses of everyday life. Social Equity - Our department strives to gain universal access to public parks and recreation for residents. Staff is consistently trying to find ways that allow all people to engage and have access to the resources and programs we offer. Whether its developing playgrounds that provide access to all abilities or offering scholarships to programs for those who cannot afford to pay, it is our belief that we can bring a community together to help improve each and every resident’s quality of life. Join us on Facebook: These three pillars are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all that the Great Falls Park and Recreation Department Great Falls Park and Recreation provides for the community, but I hope it makes you think Become a Fan - Keep informed on activities and events about the many ways parks and recreation improves your throughout the Park and Recreation Department. quality of life. Although we may be known as “The Department • Aquatics • Natural Resources of Fun”, parks and recreation is much more than that and is an essential part of any community, especially Great Falls. • Parks • Community Recreation Center • Rivers Edge Trail • Recreation Page 2 • Great Falls Park & Recreation Summer Guide 2020 Paid Advertising Section

A Lively Racket Game for all Ages and Abilities. Pickle-ball® was created with one thing in mind: fun. It was designed to be easy to learn and play whether you’re five, eighty-five or somewhere in between. Pickle-ball® is traditionally played on a badminton-sized court with special Pickle-ball® paddles, made of wood or high-tech aerospace materials. The ball used is similar to a whiffle ball, but slightly smaller. The lower net and whiffle ball allow the game to be accessible to people of all ages and abilities, while still allowing more competitive players to test their mettle. View all the official Products. In addition to the modified net and gear, there are several key rules in Pickle-ball® that help make the game more accessible. In tennis, and many net sports, games are often won and lost by the power of the serve. In Pickle-ball®, the ball must bounce once on each side before volleys are allowed. This opens the game to more players and extends play for added fun. The Community Recreation Center will be adding drop-in pickle ball for the public. Swim Lessons are a Lifelong Skill that should never be overlooked If your child is 6 months to 3 years or older and hasn’t spent much time in the water or seems afraid to go into the water, it’s a good idea to take a parent-child class together prior to signing them up for a regular swim lesson. Swim lessons for children ages 4 and older are centered on aquatic readiness skills that are geared to the child’s age, development level, and individual ability. These classes are grouped by both age and skill level. Beginning grade-schoolers (children ages 5-8) take classes with other beginners their age or ability. Working in small groups (generally 5 to 1 ratio), kids learn simple water-safety rules, breath control, and basic arm and leg movements. As child gets older and gains more experience in the water, they will be introduced to more advanced swimming skills.
