Dear Parishioners, All daily and weekend Masses have been suspended until further notice. Archbishop Etienne has given a dispensation for missing the Sunday Mass. This means that it is not a sin to miss Sunday Mass under these circumstances. Please spend at least one hour on Sunday in quiet prayer, read the readings for the day, pray the rosary, watch the Mass on TV or on your computer. We will be recording the Mass at Sacred Heart and having it available on our parish website and Facebook ac- count. Please join us spiritually for Mass while you are watching it at home. Due to Governor Inslee's order "Stay Home, Stay Healthy," the parish office will be closed as of Thursday, March 26. If you have any church business or spiritual needs please contact the parish answering service and they will get in contact with somebody from the parish staff. We will respond to your call as soon as we can. Please know of our continued prayers for everyone during this difficult time. Please pray the prayer asking for the intercession of Our Lady of Seattle to bring this pandemic to an end, and that we may once again be able to celebrate the public Mass. God bless you, Fr. Illness is no fun. A simple cold can hang on for days, to be followed by weeks of a lingering cough. Other more serious illnesses (cancer, kidney failure) can result in months or years of ongoing treatments which in themselves can take their toll. Our environment has a host of things which can trigger our bodies to struggle in their efforts to be well. The recent coronavirus that has circled the globe is an example of something that now lives in our environment. Today’s Gospel begins with the words, “Master, the one you love is ill” (Jn 11:3). Sickness has come to Lazarus. Imagine living in a refugee camp…tents…no running water…poor sani- tation conditions…insects…unbearable heat and cold. These are conditions ripe for harboring germs. Imag- ine living in the largest refugee camp in the world. Kakuma (Kenya, Africa) is home to 185,000 men, women and children. What must the illness rate be under these horrific conditions? What kind of medical services are available? What is the mortality rate, especially among children whose immune systems are compromised by lack of an adequate diet? Lent is a time when we are asked to participate in almsgiving. Lent is drawing to a close. Perhaps now is the time to generously give to the CRS Rice Bowl Program. These Rites are celebrated to help deliver the elect from the power of sin and Sa- tan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. The Rites of Scrutiny are meant to uncover, and then heal, all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the elects’ hearts and to bring out through repentance all that is upright, strong and good. Three Scrutinies are celebrated in the parish community on the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays in Lent, after the homily: the Gos- pel story of the Samaritan woman at the well for the first Scrutiny, the Gospel story of the healing of the man born blind for the second Scrutiny, and the Gospel Story of the raising of Lazarus for the third Scrutiny. The celebrations of the Scrutinies also remind the whole parish community of the need to reflect on their own sins and the need for God’s help. 5

Here at Sacred Heart we have a grief support group. You will find a warm, caring envi- ronment as you grieve the death of a loved one. It connects you with others here on earth on the same journey. This will be an encouragement to many, as grieving people often think something is wrong with them when their grief doesn't proceed neatly through stages. The reality is that grieving people jump back and forth between differ- ent emotions, sometimes wrestling with multiple emotions at once. The evening consists of prayer, song, good food, discussion time and informative videos on topics to help you heal. For more information and to register for the class, you can contact Katy Baker at (360) 493-1773. Living Our Strengths For those of you who know your Strengths during this time of uncertainty, ask yourself what strength(s) am I using today to help myself and perhaps others remain calm, as Our God calls us to. For anyone wishing to talk about their strengths/talents or wanting more information on how to get started, please call the Parish Office at 360-491-0890 and ask to speak to Mary. She will return your call in a timely manner and help you through this trying time by phone conversations. “Oh Gracious God, You have drawn us together as a manifestation of the Body of Christ. Be with us as we live as stewards of Your love and mercy; strengthen us when we falter; give us wisdom to know Your will and to follow Your call in our lives. You are God, one with Jesus Christ Your Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. “ Amen. Scouts are prepared or at least adaptable! Our virtual meetings have been set up through Zoom.
